Building Peace through Sports - Oxfam's Football Festival '#iScore4Peace' in the Bangsamoro

Davao City, Philippines (September 21, 2013) 548 kids, from 57 youth-based communities, pulled  out  their  game face, gears  and passion on as they all came together to join Oxfam in the Philippines' "#iScore4Peace in the Bangsamoro: A Grassroots Children Football Festival, in celebration of the International Day of Peace," held at the Tionko Field and Grounds.
The young participants whose ages range from 6-14 years old, came from orphanages, center for abused girls, urban poor communities, public schools and some neighbouring municipalities of Davao City.  There were also teams composed of Muslims, including an all-women Muslim team who played in the girls’ division.
Hyenas Football Club (Hyenas FC), who joined the most number of divisions (5 out of 7) during the friendly football competition, is a football club initiated by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) as pre-emptive measures against youth crime or juvenile delinquency. Almost half of the composition of the club is comprised of out-of-school youths while the other half is composed of children from public schools.  In an interview, Hyenas FC assistant coach Rex Rodriguez, divulged that the team-building efforts have become really close to the children’s heart as they have all jumped from one obstacle to the other - from acquiring regular practice space for the children to parents' and CIDG staff contributing for tournament transportation, out of their own pockets.  All these challenges, however, didn't hamper their passion for the game.

Meanwhile, Zonta FC, comprising Muslim players from all 7 Islam tribes in Davao, was convened in 1990 by Mr. Melvin Mon.  He said that the #iScore4Peace in the Bangsamoro football competition taught all players to play for cooperation, teamwork and much needed tolerance.

Mintal Interage, led by its coach, Danny Boy Fernandez, a teacher from Mintal Comprehensive High School, is solely composed of children from public schools located in the southern part of Davao City. The football club was formed as a joint community service by the barangay officials and public school teachers in the aforementioned areas.  Black Knights FC, on the other hand, is comprised of public school students from the downtown area of the city. Black Knights is led by Coach Kitoy Canton.

"When children play football, there is no religion, no tribes, no politics, no war. There is just peace and football” said Mr. Richard "Ebong" Joson, Marketing and Communications Head of the Philippine Football Federation, who graced the event as the football festival's guest of honor. "And through football, the children learn the values of respect, tolerance, unity and brotherhood; values that we all need to honor and exercise to pursue our hope for true and lasting peace. It is for this very reason that is such a privilege to be part of #iScore4Peace in the Bangsamoro and represent the Philippine Football Federation." He added.

"Football is quite the extraordinary sport, as it has the ability to move people and unite communities by teaching them the sense of community and the values of teamwork, fair play, respect and solidarity while striving for a common goal, both on and off  the pitch.” said Lyca Sarenas of Oxfam in the Philippines.

Sarenas added, "With #iScore4Peace in the Bangsamoro, we harnessed the power of football and, at the same time, the power of social media, to foster the spirit of Peace Day. This campaign brought together grassroots youth communities, united young people in celebrating peace and, broadened the campaign reach on the Bangsamoro Peace Process to the youth, their guardians and their families."

The event was also graced by Erwin Protacio, General Secretary of the Davao Football Association.
The #iScore4Peace in the Bangsamoro was organized by Oxfam, an international organization working to build a future free from the injustice of poverty in 94 countries worldwide.

THE Zamboanga Football Association (Zafa) has bested the other powerhouse football teams from the country’s top universities in the Chris Monfort Memorial Cup, which was recently held in Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU).
The Zamboanga football delegation, aside from the national title, also emerged as the third place winner in the Dipolog Centennial Football Festival under the women’s category and also third place winner in the Master’s category.
Mayor Celso Lobregat has expressed elation over Zafa’s overpowering performance in the Chris Monfort Memorial Cup and good showing in the regional competition, stressing that the Zamboanga football delegation once again puts this city in the map of sports.
Zafa Secretary-General Dr. Justin Paber, accompanied by former Zafa president and now City Assessor Erwin Bernardo, spearheaded Friday the delegation in a courtesy call on Lobregat at City Hall.

Medvil-Davao plays NoCot

Tuesday, May 28, 2013
MEDVIL Football Club of Davao City collides with North Cotabato Football Association (Nocofa) at 8:30 a.m. today (Tuesday) in the semi-finals of the ongoing Philippine Football Federation-Suzuki Cup Under-23 National Cup at the Perdices Memorial Coliseum in Dumaguete City.
The Ramonito "Lalas" Carreon-coached Medvil-Davao finished second in Group B that was considered the Group of Death with two wins and one loss following a recent 3-0 shutout victory against Zamboanga del Norte-Dipolog in the eliminations over the weekend. Thus, the Dabawenyos are facing the Group A No.1 team Nocofa in the crossover semis.
Ed Merill Walohan, Yoshiharu Koizumi and Jerard Birneza knocked in goals in the 19th, 35th and 81st minutes, respectively.
Koizumi, whose head was bandaged during the game due to an injury suffered from a 1-0 opening game against Masbate, was the one who passed the ball for Birneza to score Medvil-Davao's third goal.
Carreon, in text messages to Sun.Star Davao, said that Nocofa is composed mainly of players from M'lang. They have defeated M'lang in all their past encounters since coaching the Davao squad in 2008.
Juven Benitez, who is playing for M'lang, had a stint with Davao 23 team in 2011.
"Our boys are ready. They are in good shape and determined to win. We will be reinforced by Michael Nehemiah T. Simms who arrived from Manila last Saturday," Carreon said.
The multi-titled coached said Simms, a student at the University of the Philippines Diliman and a grassroots product of Davao, is a good influence to the rest of the Davao players citing his confidence.
He added if there is a problem with the psychological aspect of the players, Simms can very well turn things around with his optimism.
Carreon, however, said he is leaning on the leadership of Jomar M. Acedo as captain of the squad. The latter, according to him, is "a very silent team captain but very influential inside the field."
Acedo, a midfielder, also covers most positions, even defense and is very consistent with what he does in every game.
Derrico Gabriel R. Diamante and his brother David Angelo Diamante, Francis Jay G. Abalunan, Frances Jay S. Abrasaldo, Imardino B. Polo, Khadaffy Biruar, Renz Rhey T. Napuran, Amani Manuel S. Aguinaldo, Danilo Lascuna Jr., Michael Pantojan and Jestoni R. Felipe complete the Medvil-Davao roster.
The team is managed by Rafael "Pops" Vilela and Erwin Protacio, is backed up by Penong's Barbecue and Grill, Coco's South Bistro, Cong. Isidro Ungab and Medvil Farms Inc.

TWO champion teams in the Bro Nationals Football Festival last weekend will be among the teams seeing action in the second leg of the Mindanao Initiative Tournament in Dipolog this May 5 and 6.

It will feature only two categories, which are the Boys Born 2002 and Born 1999 under its grassroots program.
There will be eight teams in the Born 2002 category, while as of press time, there were still five teams in the Born 1999.
Bro 2002 and Bro 1999 backed by Don Bosco Technical Center (DBTC) booters will be representing Cebu in the clash of teams from
Visayas and Mindanao.
It will still be the same lineup in the Bro 2002 teams, which has seven elite players and all 15 are from DBTC. Bro 1999 has 14 players with two picked up from Bright Academy.
Engineer Keith Buyco who is part of the DBTC Parents’ Association and one of the founders of the Bro Football Festival said that this is one way of bringing the festival to other cities.

Davao City, Davao Norte win in Davraa Meet Football

Monday, February 25, 2013
HEAVY favorite Davao City and host Davao del Norte drew first blood in the pre-opening football games of the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet 2013 at Davao del Norte Sports and Cultural Center in Mankilam, Tagum City, Monday morning.
The Albert Ryan Lim-coached Davao City secondary boys football squad thrashed Davao del Sur, 5-1, behind the heroics of Yoshiraro Koizumi and Darius Diamante who made two goals each and Warren Ravanes who added one goal.
Ravanes, a student of Davao City National High School, started the ball rolling for Davao City in the 14th minute, 20 yards top of the penalty box.
Koizomi followed it up with a goal in the 18th as Diamante scored the third goal from a combination.
Ateneo de Davao University mainstays Koizumi and Diamante then netted the fourth and fifth goals, respectively.
Jacob Mahinay scored for Davao del Sur.
Coach Lim said they need to bring back the glory for Davao City having lost the Davraa title last year although the city was then represented by another set of players.
"Most of our players are Davraa and Palaro veterans with wide championship experience in the elementary level. We, however, need to work harder to achieve our goal," Lim said in a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao.
The team is also composed of Javier Romero-Salas, Joshua Jabile, Miguel Avanceña, George Pineda, Jonathan Lim, Lorenzo Magno, John Ray Lagura, Jake Ferolino, Leander Varquez, Joshua Valdez, Karl Ledesma and Jeffril Cabaral.
Lim's wards clash against Davao Oriental at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday, then will play opposite Tagum City at 8 a.m. and Compostela Valley at 10 p.m. on Wednesday.
Davao del Norte's secondary booters, meanwhile, hacked out a 4-1 victory over Mati City.
In the elementary division, Panabo City defeated Mati City, 4-1, while Tagum City blanked Davao Oriental, 3-0.
All teams will play the single elimination format where the top four teams will advance to the semi-finals en-route to the championship.
Games set late Monday evening pit Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) against Panabo City (secondary), Davao del Sur against Digos (elementary) and Comval against Davao Oriental (secondary).

Monday, May 28, 2012
THE Solido FC girl booters of Davao City lived up to their billing by copping the U17 title of the 2nd Balangay Football Festival at the Butuan City Sports Complex in Barangay Libertad over the weekend.
The Julio Orcasitas-coached Solido shutout the Malaybalay FC, 2-0, in the finals behind the goals of Janna Barcemo and Nina Arrieta in third and 17th minutes, respectively.
Solido also blanked the Manolo Fortich FC, 2-0, in the semis.
The champion squad came home with P5,000 and a trophy while Malaybalay FC settled with P3,500.
Barcemo was hailed most valuable player while Arrieta received the best defender award. Teammate Mary Joy Chavez was named best goalkeeper as Nina Yanto took the best striker title.
Completing the cast were Anika Ong, Sanaa Jikiri, Mary Joy Indac and Inah Rosales.
The Buboy Arrieta-managed Solido, however, bowed to Cagayan de Oro City's (CDO) JRFC via penalty shootout, 7-8, in women's open titular showdown.
Arrieta, in text messages to Sun.Star Davao, said her daughter Nina scored a goal at 16' to force a 1-1 deadlock en-route to the penalty shootout.
"Malas talaga. Naka-score pa ang CDO sa corner ng goalkeeper namin (It was unfortunate. CDO scored at our goalkeeper's corner)," Arrieta said.
JRFC took home the top purse and a trophy while Solido salvaged P3,500 and a trophy.
Joy Rivera of Solido was best defender.
The bootfest, hosted by the Butuan-Agusan Norte Football Association (Banfa) under president and Butuan City Vice Mayor Law Fortun, was part of the silver anniversary celebration of the Balangay Festival. (Ruji Peter S. Abat)
