Defended by a Highland Renegade released!

Defended by a Highland Renegade has been released as a stand-alone novella. It was previously published in the Enchanting the Highlander anthology.

When Lady Mairiana MacKerrick witnesses her fiancé, Alec Lindsay, committing a murder three days before their wedding, she decides she must run away. Darack Grant, secretly an outlaw MacGregor, is on a clandestine mission, but when he finds Mairiana hiding in the stables, he decides to help her escape. He remembers the lovely lass from their one meeting a few years before. Though he was drawn to her, he always saw her as far beyond his reach. Mairiana finds her hidden inner strength and trusts the Highland renegade to protect her on their journey through the Scottish Highlands. On the way, they find an astonishing passion. But Alec will stop at nothing to reclaim his betrothed and destroy Darack, even pin a murder on him.

Excerpt

Darack MacGregor Grant stepped into the horse's stall, wishing he could take the pitchfork to O'Quigley, the stable master. Nay, 'twas the thief Alec Lindsay he wished to see on the end of the pitchfork—or better yet, a sword.
Darack forked up a pile of horse dung and tossed it into the large wooden wheelbarrow sitting just outside the door. As clandestine missions went, this was one of the worst, but he would do almost anything to see his mother smile again.
He turned to scoop up another pile but his gaze landed on a small dark form in the corner of the stall. He froze, at first wondering if the person hunched there would ambush him. They did not move.
"What are you doing there?" he blurted in a quiet tone. Were his eyes deceiving him in the low light? Had he lost so much sleep he was imagining things?
As his eyes adjusted to the dimness, he saw 'twas a lass wearing a black cloak, sitting on the ground with her knees drawn up. Her face was pale and her eyes wide.
"Hurry up in there, Grant!" O'Quigley yelled in the doorway as he passed. "You've ten more stalls to clean afore bedtime. Several guests will be arriving in the morn. The stables will be full to overflowing."
"Aye," Darack called back, forking more dung into the wheelbarrow. His gaze returned to the lass.
She placed a finger before her lips.
"What are you doing in here?" he whispered.
She rose to her full height, which was still almost a foot shorter than his own six feet, four inches. Even though the stall was dimly lit, he now recognized her—Lady Mairiana MacKerrick. Of course, he'd heard all the servants talking about how Alec was to marry her in a few days' time. He remembered her from a few years ago, when he'd gone with his cousin, the Grant chief, to Rornoch Castle to visit with her brothers. He'd thought her an overindulged and bratty young lass.
He doubted she would remember him.
When she didn't answer, he asked, "M'lady? Is something amiss?"
She took a step forward. "Darack MacGregor?"
"You must not speak that name here," he whispered, glancing at the open doorway. "I'm known as Darack Grant now." She should well remember the MacGregor name had been outlawed near the whole of their lives. To claim the name was to ask to be strung up on the gallows. His own father, the MacGregor chief, had been executed in Edinburgh when Darack was just a lad. Since then, they had lived like outlaws and vagabonds.
"I'm surprised you remember me," he said. "Do you need help, Lady Mairiana?"
"Aye. Do you promise to tell no one?" she whispered.
"Of course."
"I must find my way home, back to Rornoch." Tears glistened in her eyes.
Confused by her words, he frowned. "I thought you were going to marry Alec Lindsay in a few days."
"I was going to but… I cannot. He…" Clamping her lips between her teeth, she shook her head, blinking back more tears. "He is not the man I thought he was. Can you help me get back to my brothers?"
"Saints, lass," Darack hissed. What the devil was he supposed to do now? Hearing the footsteps of the stable master, he forked more manure into the wheelbarrow. If he left now, he couldn't complete the task he'd come here for.
Once O'Quigley's footsteps receded, he turned back to her. "Why did you decide not to marry him?"
"Alec is a thief, a liar and…."
Darack knew that already. 'Twas why he was here pretending to be a stable hand in need of work. The bastard Alec had stolen his mother's valuable brooch at a gathering of Highland clans two months ago. His father had given her the brooch on the day they married, many years ago. His mother treasured it above all things. 'Twas the only material possession she had from his father. Because of the king's proclamation fifteen years ago and the many MacGregor men executed, those still living—mainly women and children—had been forced to flee their own lands and take refuge with allied clans. Darack and his mother had sought the protection of her clan and, since then, pretended to be Grants. The MacGregors disbursed to the four winds like so much thistle down… Children of the Mist.
He couldn't give up on finding the brooch, the rightful property of his mother, something she valued so highly she'd rather starve than to sell it to buy food. Of course, he would never let it come to that, anyway. He and his kin always provided for his mother.
"What did Alec steal?" Darack asked.
"My brother's priceless dagger. He is also…" She snapped her mouth closed.
"What?"
She crept closer to him, then tugged at his arm until he leaned down. "He is also a murderer," she whispered so softly into his ear he could hardly hear her. She motioned with her thumb over her shoulder.

Here is an excerpt from my story (My Captive Highlander):

Maili's hands shook as she tried to concentrate on embroidering green bracken fronds onto a dress, but a feeling of distress near overwhelmed her.
'Twas the same feeling she'd experienced last night when she dreamed of the drowning man.
Maili glanced up at her cousin Constance who sat across from her, embroidering serenely. Fair-haired and green-eyed, Constance was beautiful and she knew it. Maili didn't wish her cousin to know anything about her thoughts. She looked on Maili's "sight" with scorn.
Unable to tolerate the suspense any longer, Maili tossed down her embroidery, sprang from the chair and strode to the window. Her gaze skimmed over the loch, much calmer now in the sunlight and reflecting the brilliant blue sky. At first, she saw naught, then she noticed a small galley being rowed toward the castle. Her brother's scouts patrolled the loch each day and night, going so far as the sea and then returning. Had they picked up the man she'd had the nightmare about?
Her stomach knotted as they rowed closer. When the men leapt ashore and pulled the galley in, one man remained lying in the boat, unmoving.
"'Tis him," she whispered, touching the wavy glass.
"What?" Constance asked behind her.
"Naught."
One of her brother's guards dipped a bucket of water and splashed it into the stranger's face. When he roused, two men dragged him from the boat. The stranger was dark-haired, tall and lean… and he wore a tartan weave she'd never seen before.
The two scouts dragged him up the shore and around the side of the castle. He jerked against them, trying to fight or escape. Fury, pain and fear radiated from him.
Who was he and what would her brother do to him? She hastened toward the door.
"Where are you going?" Constance asked.
Maili paused. "Some of the men are bringing in a stranger. I but wondered who he is."
"Why does it matter? Probably someone who trespassed onto clan lands."
"Aye. I'll return forthwith." She calmly exited and closed the door. Once out of sight, she trotted down the narrow stone stairwell to the great hall. She flew down the outside steps just as her brother smashed his fist against the stranger's jaw. Nay! One of the other men delivered a fearsome jab to the poor man's stomach. He was already bloody and haggard.
"Stop!" Maili yelled, racing toward them.
Elrick turned a furious glare on her, his tawny hair glinting in the bright sunlight and his eyes the color of blue flame. "What the bloody hell are you doing out here?"
"Who is he?" she asked. The sight of the newcomer's beaten, battered and bloody face made her ache inside. His doublet was drenched in blood. When his dark eyes met hers, 'twas clear he was halfway insensible and near to passing out. Something within her demanded that she protect him.
"He's a damned MacKenzie," her brother said. "Why do you care?"
She'd heard about the past blood feud with the MacKenzies years ago. "He's injured."
"Aye, and he's going to be even more injured before I'm through with him." Elrick gave a malicious grin.
Images of war and carnage flashed through her mind. "Nay, you must not harm him further or you will bring another feud to our clan," she warned.
"Don't think to order me about, sister! Take her inside!"
"What do you intend to do with him?" she asked, trying to keep her voice calm and reasonable.
"Get her out of here. Now!" he ordered.
One of the burly guards picked her up, tossed her over his massive shoulder and carried her up the steps. She pounded her fists against his broad back, fighting to escape, but kept her gaze on the MacKenzie stranger. She had to help him!
But how?
"I cannot wait until she's married and gone from here," her brother grumbled loudly.
Chuckles followed.
"The wee witch is naught but trouble," her brother's sword-bearer and war leader Hamish said.
After the guard carried her into the great hall, the entry door slammed, cutting off the rest of the conversation about her.
"Damn you! Release me!" she told the guard.
He gave a brief laugh and tossed her to her feet. "Do not place a curse on me, witch. I'm only following orders."
"I am not a witch," she said through clenched teeth and tried to dart around him toward the door.
"Nay." He jumped in front of her and blocked the door.
She hastened across the room to the narrow window that looked out over the barmkin.
Her brother slammed his fist into the MacKenzie man's stomach and he doubled over.
"Stop it, Elrick," she grumbled. Shouting at him would do no good. 'Twould only make him angrier. How could he be so vicious? He was nothing like their dear, departed father or her other brother, Neacal.
Elrick stepped back to converse with three of his advisors. Her gaze locked to the dark-haired stranger. He needed the healer and probably some food. But 'twas something beyond his immediate needs that drew her attention. Something that made her want to run to him and protect him against her own clansmen.
She sensed he was a man who would be important to her.

Spreading Christmas Cheer

By Eliza Knight

Happy December! It’s that time of year when you can’t walk into a store without the scent of spicy cinnamon assailing your senses or vibrant decorations grabbing your attention.
I love December for so many reasons! I love the smell of Christmas and pine trees. I love the movies, the music, and cuddling under blankets. I love wishing it would snow and then lighting a fire, and the enchanting scent of wood burning. I like to shop for new decorations (I usually get one new decoration a year!). I like to turn on the candles in the windows and stand outside to look at how magical a lighted candle makes my house look.
I don’t so much enjoy stringing lights around trees and bushes… I let Mr. Knight take care of that! But I do love decorating our Christmas tree and reminiscing about each and every ornament.
Cookie baking! I love to come up with the various recipes I’m going to use and then putting them together. The sugary, succulent scent of cookies baking is swoonworthy.
But my absolute favorite thing to do around the holidays is spread happiness. I like to do it through giving. Giving readers a wonderful story to read. Giving someone who may be down on their luck a lift,  like paying for the person behind me at Starbucks, helping a needy family, donating time, surprising someone with something they’ve been wanting for a long time. I like to teach my children about the holidays and how it’s not about what you get, but how you make someone else’s day a little brighter. Seeing a smile on their face, is a gift in itself.
What is your favorite part of the holiday season? Decorating? Baking cookies? Buying presents? Volunteering your time?

I’m happy to give away one e-book copy of A KILTED CHRISTMAS WISH!
Leave a comment for your chance to win!

A KILTED CHRISTMAS WISH is a sexy, contemporary novella of about 20,000 words.

Down on her luck with men, Darla Strider wonders if she’ll ever meet her own kilted hero. Considering she lives in present day New York City, the likelihood of that happening is nil. She’s certain only a Christmas wish could make her dreams come true. Until the day Aaron Sutherland walks into her cafĂ©, and changes her whole world.

Leaving his pain in Scotland for life in the States, the last thing Aaron has in mind is hooking up with a city girl. But one look at Darla and she’s got him singing All I Want for Christmas is You.

A short excerpt…
Chapter One
Early-December
New York City

Highlanders. Oh, she wished.
Darla Strider, hopeless romantic and cynical love hater, tossed the Scottish romance novel she’d been reading aside. Highlander’s Reward… Ultra alpha hero, fiercely loyal, powerful, hot body, good in bed, not to mention his kilt… When was she going to get her reward? The Scottish hero from the novel certainly wasn’t going to leap from the pages, long sexy hair flowing, sword glinting, eyes filled with desire and ask her out to dinner followed by mind-blowing sex—except in her fantasies. And in her fantasies, she would say, yes, a thousand times yes, throwing herself into his waiting, muscular arms.
Leaning an elbow on the counter of her gourmet deli and resting her chin in her hand, she gazed out the paned glass onto the busy, holiday-adorned Manhattan street. Any minute the lunchtime rush would begin. Thank goodness her chef was in today. With Amanda, her hostess/waitress, out sick, the counter was going to get crazy. Reading time was over for the next few hours. What did it matter, anyway? She was beginning to be overly bitter about romance and a reminder of that was the last thing she needed.
One miserable, failed date after another. A couple of meaningless relationships and a series of messy nights bumping uglies. Romance, for Darla, was dead.
What she wouldn’t give to have a Highlander walk through her door that very moment. At least a free year’s supply of her prized veggie and goat cheese panini. To hear his brogue stroke her like a caress while he told her how beautiful he thought she was. She smirked. For that, she’d throw in a daily glass of sangria.
Never going to happen.
She glanced over at the miniature Christmas tree tucked into the corner near the window. Stockings hung from its branches, all in the name of holiday cheer. A little bronzed Santa sat nestled in the branches, surrounded by twinkling white lights and silver tinsel.
“Santa,” she murmured. “Please bring me one of these Highland heroes for Christmas.”
Oh, God, now she was resorting to talking to inanimate objects. Hopeless.
The bell over the door dinged. Swiping her hands on her snowman-covered apron as she stood straight and plastered a smile on her face, Darla resisted the urge to gasp at the gorgeous man who walked through the entrance. Dressed in a dazzling fitted, charcoal-gray suit, with a light blue dress shirt and shiny black tie, he looked like he’d just walked off a billboard titled, Every Woman’s Dream. Dark hair, slightly on the longish side, clean shaven, chiseled features—and those eyes. Gray as storm clouds and just as unpredictable.
Darla swallowed her shock and cocked her head slightly. “Welcome to City CafĂ©,” she said, silently cursing the slight shake in her voice. She clutched her fingers together behind her back, then quickly brought them around front when she realized she’d thrust her breasts forward, too.
A delicious grin curled his lips and his eyes raked over her making Darla wish she’d chosen her good jeans today. The ones that made her butt look bootylicious instead of I-eat-too-much-chocolicious.
“Thanks,” he said.
Darla did a double-take, her mouth falling open at least an inch. She definitely detected some sort of accent. Her heart sped up and she gave a furtive glance at Santa. Sounded Scottish, but it was hard to decipher from one syllable. There was no way… She was delusional, that was all.
“Would you like to eat in or carryout?” she managed.
He studied her for a few skips of her heartbeat. There was a wicked glint in his eyes. The kind that would normally make her melt. Okay, fine. She admitted it, the way he was looking at her, she was bound to go boneless if he didn’t look away.
“I’d like a table,” he said.
Holy, *******, Santa Claus!
The man spoke with the most discernible Scottish brogue. Knees going weak, Darla gripped the counter to hold herself up. She blinked, staring at him and then back at her Christmas tree. Was this a joke? No. Couldn’t be. Just a coincidence. A huge coincidence. No stars-aligning, tragic romance bull, just chance.
“Is that all right?” he asked, staring around the cafĂ© when she didn’t respond.
The door opened, bell dinging, as a group of three walked in, dusting snow off their sleeves. The noise pulled her out of her trance, and Darla jerked into motion, grabbing a menu.
“Yes, yes, of course.” She skidded around the side of the counter and took him to the table closest to her—selfish really. She wanted the ability to stare at him while she worked. Ugh. Maybe she should convince him to take his order to go?

Kate St. James explains about Exes and Ahhs

Hi, today, Kate St. James is here to talk about her erotic romance story in the latest Secrets anthology.

Kate St. James lives in the Pacific Northwest with her adoring family. She keeps trying to kick them out, but they're sticking like glue...for reasons she can't figure. It's not like she's a model wife and mother. Or is she? Therein lies one of the great mysteries of Kate's generation.

An avid reader since childhood, Kate loves spending her days writing about the hot men and adventurous women populating her head. When she's not engrossed in her fictional worlds, you can find her chasing her hound in the hills above an azure lake, ignoring the smoke alarms blaring from the kitchen, or endlessly renovating her house.

Welcome Kate! Please tell us about Exes & Ahhs in Secrets Volume 26 Bound By Passion.

Kate: Hi, Nicole! Thanks for welcoming me back to Fierce Romance. My story, Exes & Ahhs, is an erotic reunion romance. Well, reunion in the sense that the story brings ex-lovers back together. However, they've been spending time together all along, just not in bed. :)

Here's a longer version of the blurb from the back of Secrets Volume 26: Bound By Passion:

When Risa Haber and Eric Lange were dating, she craved a lifetime and he suffered from No Woman's Gonna Tie Me Down Syndrome. Now, Eric's a silent partner in Risa's dessert catering business, but keeps sticking his nose into her recipes, her client list...down her blouse. She's tired of his insincere flirtations, so when they get trapped in a private party room following an erotically-themed event, she offers one last night of hot, carnal delights if he'll sell her his share of the biz, then exit her life forever. Eric figures he has to play along--or does he? All these months without Risa by his side have convinced him that as compatible as they are as lovers today, the rewards are guaranteed to go much deeper if they partner their hearts for life. Now if only he could convince Risa.

Nicole: Sounds wonderful! I love reunion stories. Do you have a review you could share with us?

Kate: Do I ever! First, Romantic Times rated Secrets Volume 26: Bound by Passion 4 Stars. If that weren't exciting enough, Cocktail Reviews awarded Secrets 26 4.5 Champagne Flutes overall and gave my story, Exes & Ahhs, 5.5 Champagne Flutes! The reviewer said, "This was brilliant! I loved the opening scene of this novella—it’s hilarious, saucy, and a great introduction to Risa and Eric. The love scenes are blisteringly hot and very, very sexy... This is easily one of my favorite erotic romances of recent months."

The maximum rating for Cocktail Reviews is 6 champagne flutes, known as "The Whole Bottle of Champagne," so I was very excited to nab 5.5 flutes.

Candy Ready's Red Hots also said, "This is a highly erotic, funny, tender romp that readers will absolutely love. You will laugh, get turned on, and cry before you finish, and you will wish for more! Eric is to die for!"

If I can share one more review, Erotic Horizon recently said, "Exes & Ahhs is hilariously funny, Ms. St James has given us two protagonists that you cannot help but fall in love with.... I absolutely enjoyed this read; it has everything, the little pikes of jealously, the cute best friend, the aging porn star and top that off with some steamy sex scenes."

Nicole: Wow!! Wonderful reviews! What is your favorite element in this story and why?

Kate: I love the reunited lovers aspect. Risa thinks she knows what she wants, and it isn't Eric. Watching her discover that Eric isn't as shallow as she believes really tugged at my heart strings during the writing of this story. Also, Risa does several risque things while trying to prove to herself that Eric isn't the man for her. Dreaming up these episodes was extremely satisfying. ;)

Nicole: I bet! I can't wait to read this. Who is your favorite character in this story?

Kate: I must say, while my heroes and heroines always hold a special place in my heart, with Exes & Ahhs I totally loved writing the character of aging former porn star and successful magazine publisher, Lainey Fullbright. The cool thing about writing secondary characters is that you can really let loose with them, and I did just that with Lainey and her pals.

I also love how secondary characters Kyla and Dante embark on the beginnings of a romance of their own during Risa and Eric's story. I created Kyla as a foil for Risa, and then, during a scene between Kyla and Eric, Dante suddenly showed up. Immediately, I realized that Kyla and Dante could have their own story to tell someday, and I reworked Exes & Ahhs accordingly. So if anyone likes what they see of Kyla and Dante in Exes & Ahhs, please email Red Sage and tell them you'd love to see a sequel--because I'd love to write one.

Nicole: Super idea! I love linked stories. What is your writing process?

Kate: This seems to change for me with every book and novella I write. Generally, though, I come up with a germ of an idea and tuck it away in a bulging idea file. When I begin a new project, I often start by going through this file. Whatever jumps out at me is what I write next. I start by brainstorming the story on my own as well as I can, and if I need help, I belong to a brainstorming group I can call upon for certain plot and character points. I don't write a synopsis at this time unless forced to (like for a contract). I much prefer to write a one-page blurb, because then I don't feel tied to a plot. Tying myself to a plot really restricts my muse, I've discovered. But I'll jot down scene ideas as they pop into my head, then I usually write the story scene by scene, first fast-drafting the scene and then revising and editing it before I move on to the next one. With some projects, I have jumped around and fast-drafted all the scenes in the project that I can "see." But usually my tendency is to keep proceeding from one scene to the next. To me, writing is an organic process that I can only accomplish by revising my story as it unfolds. Writing an entire first draft from beginning to end doesn't work for me. I sorely wish it did sometimes, but that's life. However, I still revise/edit and/or tighten the story as a whole once I'm done my revised-as-I-go process.

Nicole: Very cool! I always love learning how different authors write. Now here's something for you readers to watch. A book trailer for Secrets Volume 26.
