Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo

Andy | Saturday, October 16, 2021 | | Best Blogger Tips
From the archives of 2018. The show is much more than a Military Tattoo that takes place in Halifax Nova Scotia. If you are there next year from June 25 to July 2, 2022 I highly recommend you attend the show. It is well worth it.

Remembrance Day

Andy | Saturday, November 11, 2017 | | Best Blogger Tips
November 11th is the day that Canadians commemorate those who died in armed conflicts. The above photo depicts what remains of Canada's Camp-X used as training facility for WWII spies. More than 500 Canadian and American civilians were trained as intelligence specialists by the British Special Operations Executive. Serving on dangerous missions abroad, these secret agents were not legally protected if caught nor were they openly recognized for their courage and sacrifice. The first school of its kind in North America, Camp X was also an advanced top-secret communications relay station until it closed in 1969. The camp's activities helped build intelligence ties between Canada, Great Britain, and the United States, and have inspired spy-fiction writers.

Lest We Forget

Andy | Friday, November 11, 2016 | | | Best Blogger Tips
Canadians recognize Remembrance Day, originally called Armistice Day, every 11 November at 11 a.m. It marks the end of hostilities during the First World War and an opportunity to recall all those who have served in the nation’s defence. Pictured above is Lancaster Bomber KB882. It has been sitting outside in Edmundston, New Brunswich since 1964, when the city bought it for $1,600. Over the years, the aircraft deteriorated, and birds had built nests inside and rust had set in. Built in Ontario in 1944, it's one of the last surviving Lancaster Bomber. After surviving its missions over war-torn Europe, (more than 3,300 of them were lost in battle) KB882 served another 12 years with RCAF 408 Squadron mapping Canada’s high Arctic and keeping an eye on Soviet ice stations. There is hope that a buyer can found that would put the effort into restoring the bomber.

Tanks A Lot

Andy | Thursday, August 04, 2016 | | Best Blogger Tips
The Holy Roller, a permanently mounted Sherman tank, stands tribute to the Canadian WWII effort and to the 700 men of the First Hussars regiment.
__

The tank is thought to be the only one of its kind to survive the North-West Europe Campaign from D-Day to VE Day. It currently sits as a memorial tribute at Victoria Park in London, Ontario.

WWII Ruins

Andy | Saturday, July 30, 2016 | | | Best Blogger Tips
There is not much left of the Chapel Point Battery Site a World War II era fortification site at Sydney Mines, Cape Breton Island, built to guard Sydney Harbour.
__

Chapel Point includes an observation post and gun batteries and several below ground fortifications. The buildings and underground fortifications are all included in the historic designation as well as the surrounding property. It is valued historically as it played a significant role in the defense of Sydney Harbour during World War II.
__

The site was decommissioned in 1943 and largely dismantled in 1948. The town of Sydney Mines later purchased the site.

Unfortunately it has not been able to withstand Graffiti attacks.

My posting today is out of respect I have for USA Memorial Day. I'm glad the book burners lost the war.
