SUMMER READING LIST
NANCY & KIMBERLY WU

Nancy & Kimberly Wu the sister-team behind Building Block, a multi-medium design project based in Los Angeles. They design luxury goods with the simple "rightness" and minimalist strength of basic architectural forms. (They also dabble in some pretty amazing tassles). We loved getting a look at some of books they will be turning to for summer diversion and work inspiration. Thanks, ladies!

SUMMER READING LIST
ERIC MARTH

I've featured Virginia-based photographer Eric Marth's work and projects before, and I was thrilled to get his summer reading list. It's a sunny blend of poetry, gardening, photography and ecology, and Marth shot the books on his own front porch. I can't wait to grab a glass of lemonade and dig in! SUMMER READING LIST
ELLIOTT WALKER

Elliott Walker is a New York-based graphic designer. He is also the founder and editor of Day Job magazine, an excellent biannual print publication about contemporary work culture. His own day job is at the design studio Pentagram, but Elliott spends his evenings compiling content for the next issue his magazine; so even his hobbies involve work! We're excited to take a little time away from working to explore his recommendations here. Thanks Elliott! Click covers for more information. All photos by Elliott Walker.

SUMMER READING LIST
RENEE FRIEDRICH

Renee Friedrich is the woman behind Anaïse, an on-line womenswear and concept shop that displays a kinship with Japanese/French design and aesthetics. Renee is a soft spoken and unassuming individual, but behind her calm, quiet exterior lives a very hard worker with an unfailing eye for the new and beautiful, and we always look forward to seeing what she finds next. SUMMER READING LIST
LEIGH PATTERSON

Leigh Patterson is an editor and web designer in Austin, TX. She is co-creator of a fantastic art, design, and literary journal called synonym. She had this to say about her selections:

"Something happens to me in the summer where my brain just goes…away. Remember that time I wanted to read Infinite Jest in July? Me neither.
Basically, the only thing I really want to do from June to August is be given permission to let my guard down. And as far as reading is concerned, I want to consume books that I can sit and let wash over me like a wave.
That said, I'm also kind of a snob. I have a hard time just buying the Hunger Games trilogy, okay?! Fortunately, there are a lot of books that toe the line between something you're not embarrassed to read in public and something that, if we're being honest, is actually just a mainstream thriller in "literary fiction's" clothes. Soak it up.

1. Graham Greene

Our Man in Havana

In college I took a class about Graham Green and Evelyn Waugh. Basically the class was about chauvinism, alcoholics, and war? The saving grace was this book, which is a total espionage thriller that's also hilarious! Highly recommended.

2. Philip Roth

Goodbye, Columbus

I'm convinced this is the ultimate summer book. A coming-of-age story with a whole lotta Romeo/Juliet "boy from the other side of the tracks" drama, Goodbye, Columbus feels so nostalgic and comfortable and...it's also really confusing that it's written by Philip Roth.

3. Donna Tartt

The Secret History

Bizarre secret cults, East Coast boarding schools, and a cast of terrible, terrible people. All you need to know.

Thanks, Leigh!

SUMMER READING LIST
ERIK HEYWOOD

For the fourth year in a row on this blog, I'm excited to kick off (with my own humble offering) a collection of Summer Reading Lists to take you from beach-side blankets to back yard hammocks; from from bright and lazy June mornings in bed to long evening lounges in the living room. Check back every few days for thought-provoking and beautiful reading lists from an amazing group of artists, editors, designers, booksellers, and other remarkable creative people . READING LIST
PROF. UWE J. REINHARDT

Professor Reinhardt heads the master degree study program on exhibition design at the Fachhochschule Dusseldorf (the University of Applied Arts). It's an achievement that would be pretty impressive all by itself, but he's also the chair of creative writing there, an author who's published widely on graphic design and communication design, a poet, and a designer at his own firm. No wonder he's sent such a well-rounded reading list! Philosophy, poetry, typography,  architecture, fiction, design, photography and travel all make appearances here, and make for a very tempting stack of summer reading.

READING LIST
A.N. DEVERS

A.N. Devers has a contagious love for writers and their surroundings. She runs the highly diverting Writer's Houses (which I've mentioned before), a website devoted to literary pilgrimage and the atmosphere of writerly creation. But far from being a mere fan of the writer's art, Devers is a very good writer herself. I particularly enjoy her recounting of an auction where she bought a prized fur coat once belonging to Edward Gorey, (and published by the Paris Review, no less). The essay, like her reading list, is intelligent, far ranging, and witty. That is to say, a lot like Devers herself.
