Unreleased Heroquest Knight Number 1

I painted the 3rd figure in this series over the weekend...probably goes by the name of Sir Orange l'orange...

I went for an overall warm tone and a limited palette. Base coat of Vallejo Hull Red followed by Foundry Orange shade and GW Troll Slayer Orange.

He's the first of two knights in this set. The second one will be making an appearance once I've decided on a colour scheme for him.

In other news I've decided on a colour scheme for my Sons of Horus 30k Heresy figures, and I'll be tackling a Leviathan Dreadnought once I've worked up the courage!

Painting progress: first quarter 2018

Blimey, I can't believe it's been 4 months since my last post. Being the hobby butterfly that I am, I'm currently back in the fantasy/scifi vibe with my historicals taking a bit of a break...go with the flow, eh?

So here's a roundup of what I've been upto so far this year.

Unreleased HQ

Back in 2014 I reported (here and here) on some unreleased figures that I'd found in Bryan Ansell's collection, which we believe may have been unreleased prototypes for Heroquest. I've been very lucky to acquire a set of these, which I've started to paint. So far I've completed the wizard and the elf:

52nd Regiment of Foot colour test

Just a quickie before I sign off for Christmas. I've picked up a copy of Osprey's"The Indian Mutiny" and as per usual with Osprey books there are some cracking colour plates. One of the figures illustrated in this particular volume is a private from the 52nd Regiment of Foot (Oxfordshire Light Infantry). This regiment was involved in the siege of Delhi, and the figure is a good match for a group I picked up of Foundry's British Infantry in Flannel Shirt Advancing:

Indian Mutiny project: mutineers and warrior cavalry horses

This is the start of something big! I'm embarking on a project to paint and wargame the various forces involved in the Indian Mutiny of 1857, an event that sent shockwaves through the British Empire. I'll be documenting my progress in the hope that it will keep my momentum going - I have a lot of figures to get through!

So to kick off I've been basing some mutineers, and some horses for warrior cavalry:

Colonial wars Afghan command

So this post marks a bit of a turning point for me: I've recently been bitten by the historicals wargaming and painting bug. I seem to have developed a fascination with the "little wars" of the Victorian era, and I'm also turning my attention to WWII gaming in various scales (but more of that another day). To kick it off, here are a couple of rather splendid Afghan command figures from Wargames Foundry, suitable for a range of conflict in the 19th century:

This was one of those "grab something out of the lead pile" projects, and it helped that he was already assembled and primed when he emerged. I decided to make him a Word Bearer so I went for a modern colour scheme to suit this Legion:

This one has been in my undercoated pile for a little while, and happens to be one of my fav beastmen of the classic Realm of Chaos era. A classic Jes Goodwin sculpt.
