Howdy Neighbour

I made this card for a family I know who is into horses. I haven’t seen them in a while so I thought they might appreciate this card.

howdy neighbour

I think this was also for a a sketch challenge because this isn’t exactly a card layout I’d think up myself. But as happens about 50% of the time, I forgot to link it up in time. sigh…

Dontcha love those wooden embellies? I love using wood veneers, but especially on more rugged themed cards. The twine was supposed to look like a lasso. Did it work?

Enjoy, Rebecca

Amour Tag

This tag was for a Swap-bot swap with one of my favourite partners. She came up with the theme of Love Story. I took that quite literally!

amour tag

Since I took this photo, I added some glue to restrain that bow and keep the little lady at the top from being swallowed up by it! :) The papers, tag and leaves are by Maggie Holmes for her new Open Book collection. I just ADORE it. I added the strip of glitter to the bottom of the tag, coated the people and heart in gold paint/Copic ink and added glitter to the little bird too. I love altering embellies to make them more my own.

The ribbon was hand-dyed (by me!) and when I first made it, it looked almost fluorescent! But it seemed to go well with this bright rose paper. I used some vintage lace to go with it.

Enjoy, Rebecca

Rugged Sympathy Cards

My FIL passed away recently and while we weren’t close, it was hard to see my teenaged son and my husband so sad. So I made them both sympathy cards.

rugged sympathy boot

Of course, as with many of us, I struggle to make masculine cards that aren’t super boring. Sure it’s easy to layer a few papers but that’s so blah. I used some ephemera I’d been saving and a cool technique to jazz it up some.

rugged sympathy butt

The background is crumpled cardstock which I then smoothed and DTP added some light brown ink. I spritzed it with water to soften the look, let it dry then applied a slightly darker shade orange  ink with my fingers to really work it into the paper. It if was closer to the same shade, I might have been able to use a sponge applicator but this seemed to really bring out the texture in the paper. A sponge might have applied ink too evenly. My fingers were only orange for one day :).  I wish more of it showed.

Mojo379

I’m entering this in the Simon Monday challenge to make new friends but keep the old. I used an old technique to make the paper look like leather and an old stamp. I used ephemera I’ve been saving for ages and new veneers. I also used Mojo Monday 379 for the sketch. for Mojo Monday Judges: I’m entering both cards. But I can only link up one card for each URL. So I entered the other card by clicking on it then using the URL for hte photo. Sorry but no way to link back to the challenge for that card. HOpe that’s OK.

Feel Watts Better

I decided I’d better use up my SSS card kits so I made 3 cards at once. I needed a masculine card for my FIL at he last minute and realized I have very few masculine cards. I usually make them just when I need them and so don’t have a stash.

light bulb cards

The third card is identical to the right card. I just liked the splatters better on this one! They are the same size; weird the right one looks larger. Must be the angle.

light bulb cards2

For this light bulb, I stamped it on white cardstock and coloured it with two colours of Copics. The white splatters are MrHuey’s mist. I just flicked the stem of the sprayer onto the card.

light bulb cards3

For this one, I stamped with yellow ink on white cardstock using the solid stamp included in the set. I prefer the Copic coloured one tho. Just as a note, I quite shamelessly CASEd the cards from the inspiration sheet they include with the kit. Why reinvent the wheel right?

Darling Freestyle Collage Card

I’m not usually a huge fan of diagonal lines on my cards but I love this tilted panel layout.

I don’t celebrate Valentine’s day and these papers were meant to be used for v-day. So I had to adapt the papers and tags to a simple love card. This is easily one of my fav cards I’ve made all year.

I made a ‘thing’ for Unscripted Sketches and some other challenges :)

Wow, my mind is really fried after having my hubby and kids home for a week and a bit. Holy moley! I made something and don’t know what to call it. It’s for Unscripted Sketches and also some other challenges (finally) so let’s just get on to business shall we?

RebeccaEdnie237

So I get it, at first glance this is a strange mix of things to put on a … well, it’s not a canvas. It’s not even a canvas board. It’s not really a painting either is it? It’s way, way too big to be a card at 7.25x8.25” (it was supposed to be 5x7 with 1/4” framing borders but it was just too small for the snowflakes so I added a 3” section). And now it’s too big for any standard frame! It’s too warped to just hang on the wall with a ribbon and too big for my SMASH album!

god is an artist 3

I started with the concept that I would be combining three challenges: The Shabby Tea Room-use snowflakes, silver/white and buttons/bells, obviously Unscripted Sketches and SSS Stamp and Show to use Tim Holtz products. I dragged out all the Tim Holtz stamps I own and was stumped. None of them are winter related at all. But, I have lots of inks and plenty of stamps that make nice background stamping plus plenty other stuff.

god is an artist 4

So I decided to drip TH inks artfully down a piece of watercolour paper. Hmmm, easier said than done. I chose a great big fat mop brush which would hold lots of paint right? Yep, I was right! However, it seems it didn’t want to release said paint onto the paper, grrr… Ok, second try, smaller fat brush would release the liquid, better but then too many lovely fat droplets ran all the way to the bottom of the page instead of artfully stopping with perfectly round balled ends right where I wanted them too stop. No wonder some artists get the big bucks. This stuff ain’t easy!

god is an artist 5

OK, so my page is dry, some artful drops have been stopped in the appropriate places, now what? So I fill in the space with some TH stamps. So far so good. Then I realized I’ve used butterflies. D’uh. Oh, well, I can cover them up! Up with what? Hmmm… Thus was the journey of the upper part of my… thing. I’ve seen some canvases end up nicer but look similar. The artist adds many items to the canvas disregarding the colour. Then gessos over the whole shebang, spray mists or paints it solid at first, then adding shadows, highlights and a few more embellishments. Tone on tone effect.

god is an artist 2

I had planned to add the snowflakes over the coloured drips at the bottom of the upper portion thinking it would create a great contrast, colour vs the silver but instead it just seems to cause competition for your eye and was too crowded. So I added a piece at the bottom and did the same thing with pewter Distress stain as I had done with Distress inks at the top. I started with full strength but it didn’t spread well so I went to a dilute version to help it move then back to full strength to add some deeper colour. I didn't have silver sequins so I took ivory ones, put a pin in the center and used a silver paint pen to colour them. I stroked outwards and slightly downwards from the center which also served to turn them as I coloured then just moved the pin which moved the sequin across my craft sheet so they could dry. Wash, rinse, repeat!

un sk237

When I saw the Artist sentiment I really wanted to use it but I knew it wouldn’t be read as a background stamp. And it didn’t make much sense by itself. But recently I saw a post on Digital Photography School about snowflake photography. The snowflakes looked like everything from typical snowflakes we see as stamps to satellites in space to glass platters to logos for computer companies to what’s inside a computer. Some were hexagons almost completely devoid of any other form. I know many don’t believe but for those of us who do, snowflakes are a pretty amazing and faith strengthening creation. So I realized this was a perfect way to use this sentiment after all. And it kind of ties in my art on top with God’s art on the bottom (his is way better!)

Sorry that was so long. I hope you will play with us this week at Unscripted Sketches. Hopefully you all had great weeks visiting with family and friends, you stayed safe and healthy, the busyness is over and you all have more time off to enjoy! So why not spend some time playing our sketch? The more the merrier!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Teddy’s First Scrapbook Pages!

I’ve been so overwhelmed with taking care of my autistic son and getting him the help that he needs that I’ve not done a single scrapbook page of my baby until National Scrapbooking Day! Then I finally managed to get a two page spread done which entered me in a few Studio Calico challenges to boot!

teddy newborn layout left side

This is the left side of the spread. Please click on it to enlarge it. The colour of the ‘precious’ is off, it’s a transparency over a piece of PTI melon berry cardstock but it looks icky brown here, eww. and the lace isn’t crooked. The page was leaning up against my backdrop and bowed a bit which made it look a bit warped in the center. Sorry! I promise it is my usual meticulously straight. Well, unless something is deliberately NOT meticulously straight! Ha! Like the patterned papers peeking out from under the photo. Thanks to Maggie Holmes’ video showing her process for the inspiration. I’ve always admired her designs and it was awesome to see her work!

teddy newborn layout left side2

I’ve since added our hospital bracelets to the pocket on the page. In this photo it only holds the tape measure they used to measure him right after he was born. The nurse makes a tiny tear in it at the head circumference and the length, writes on the weight and gives it to the mom to keep. Ours is now all safe in this cute little pocket! This page was entered in ‘Use something transparent’, ‘Use a pocket’, ‘Use 5 or more patterned papers’, Mixed Media’ challenges.

In this one, you might notice that my older son is in the delivery room! Yep, he was there for both of his brothers being born at 6 and almost 11 years old. He did really well and I was so glad we decided to do it that way; incredible experiences he will never forget. This one was entered in ‘Use buttons’, ‘Use transparencies’, ‘Use ribbon’ and ‘Mixed Media’ challenges.

Mixed Media Quote Canvas

I am recently getting into mixed media. This canvas features one of my favourite quotes and was for a swap I hosted on Swap-Bot. It is only my second canvas ever (here is my first canvas- Friendship Canvas) so be kind but I was pretty happy.

oprah quote canvas

It was lacking a bit of depth I had hoped for as the second layer went on darker than I meant for it to and I had a technical problem with the glitter but other than that I am very pleased. The first layer on my 6x9” hard canvas covered board was a partial layer of gesso added mainly to the center, scraped on lightly over most areas but then added thickly in a few swirly shapes using a palette knife. They are hard to see in the photo but you can see the largest one under the U and R of Your.

Then I added a mix of three colours of acrylic paint, turquoise, mint and navy which I applied with my fingers getting a marbleized look. When that was dry, I adhered torn sections of French book paper (bottom right-seen below in close up, middle left, top towards the left.) To colour that, I created an acrylic paint and water wash with the turq and navy only. I applied it and realized I had WAY too much so I added it to the whole canvas so as not to waste it. I had deliberately not mixed it well so it had cool blobs in it and I loved how it puddled and pooled especially against my gesso swirls. You can see the pooling especially in the top left corner.

oprah quote canvas1

The next step was to check how large I should write my text on scrap leaving enough borders for embellishing. When I was happy, I drew similar wavy lines on my canvas and used an India ink pen to draw in my letters between the lines making them look uneven and whimsical. I added some accents using a chevron stencil and white pigment ink sprinkling on some vintage glitter while the ink was wet. Problem is, I had remembered this technique using paint, not ink and the glitter started falling off! Plus, I should have waited until after I had done my stamping to both stencil and glitter! So I brushed off as much glitter as I could (some did stick!) and used glossy accents to add the glitter back on. Fortunately, the stamping worked well right over the stencil/glitter combo.

I used only two colours for the stamping as they were the only colours other than black which I didn’t want to use which were dark enough. That’s why I was disappointed by how dark the base turned out. But I stamped off on some stampings to get a lighter tone for some variation. I’ve lightened the photos slightly to show the detail. I might have tried more lighter inks using pigment inks but most of mine are so old they are probably dried out and I don’t have reinkers. To be honest, it didn’t occur to me until now! I used a gilder’s paste to highlight the edges of the canvas (LOVE that stuff!) and added a key using a brad and Glossy accents. Finally, I stamped a patinated metal blank then covered it in acrylic paint to highlight the lettering, wiping off the excess so only the recessed areas keep any paint. I added beading wire and beads curling the ends to add interest and keep the beads on. It was added with foam tape.

I’d love hearing if this is off any interest to you. I will still post it anyways but perhaps with less detail of my process. Please feel free to comment either way, I won’t be offended if you only visit for the cards!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Hugs, You’ve Been Wonderful!

Waltzing Mouse Stamps is having a blog hop for teachers! We still have at least 5 weeks worth of school here but I like having cards made ahead of time! I’m also entering this in Deconstructing Sketches 101. I know this isn’t so teacher-y but I figure teachers are regular people too and probably get tired of teacher themed stuff. So I only added a subtle nod to a teacher theme with the printing practice lines paper.

WMS blog party logo]

WMS teacher blog hop

While making this I came up with a couple of tips. First, if you want to colour veneer shapes with mists, did you know you can just use the tip or side of the mister straw instead of getting out some sort of applicator or brush? I hate wasting product and even though it’s small, there is always some waste with an applicator. It worked perfectly and was quicker than I thought; I only dipped it in twice. Secondly, never sponge ink into your project with dirty scratch paper behind. You probably already know this but as I usually work with my paper in my hands, this didn’t dawn on me until the navy ink on my scratch paper started making my coral mist look very dirty. Bummer! Embellishment opportunity! Hello sequins!

WMS teacher blog hop2

Last, I needed a colour of red I didn’t have. First I tried second generation stamping, not right. Then a technique I love which is to stamp a strong colour that’s too strong and stamp off, then add another colour of ink to the remaining ink and use the blended ink. While this technique rocks, the result was a bit too pale. I settled for a pure red then regretted it, too bright. I continued making my card but really wasn’t happy. Then I got the fabby idea to overstamp with Antique Linen Distress ink, a deep ivory colour, to darken and remove the brightness. I took a deep breath and prayed that I would be able to line it up, stamped and yeah! Not only did I line it up correctly but the colour was just right, nicely muted but not too dark! So consider these three tricks when you don’t have the right colour ink!

deconstr sketch101

Like my embellishment? I wrapped the butterfly with wire threaded with some cheap crystals. I don’t often use good ones for cards. Here’s how to get the wrap tight without using pliers to twist the wire tight (which will mar the antennae). Fold the wire in half, thread with beads and place over the butterfly. Bring the front wire to the back and the back wire to the front keeping the wires straight. We aren’t going to twist the wires, just keep bring one wire to the front then the other, then one to the back then the other. The trick is to always start with the same wire and consistently work towards the same side otherwise you will twist and untwist the wire never getting anywhere.

Enjoy the hop. Please visit again and feel free to sign up by email subscription if you’d like. I also have RSS feed but I think it’s the kind that’s ending soon so I have to look into getting a new one.

Enjoy, Rebecca

Friendship Canvas–My First Try at Mixed Media!

I’ve been inspired by many bloggers I follow who have been getting into mixed media art lately. After all, many of us already use quite a few different media in our work so it isn’t that big of a leap to venture into what is traditionally known as mixed media artwork. We card designers already combine ink, paper, ribbon, metal, sometimes paints, chalk, pencils, spray ink, fabric and more. By adding a more permanent base than card making affords and mixing these media in new ways, voila! Mixed media art!

This is a crazy long post so grab a cuppa and get comfy. If you don’t have time to read it all now, I really hope you will save it and come back later. I have a great tutorial, a mini flower tutorial and some awesome tips all for you below. Plus a way to win by commenting!

think aloud canvas 1a

To make the bird, I drew the template myself, basing it loosely on Tim Holtz bird from the bird cage die I used. It was too small so I wanted to enlarge it and couldn't be bothered figuring out how to make my printer scan and enlarge it. I’d normally get hubby to do it but he was watching the baby so I just winged it (get it, winged it! hee hee) The chevron stripe was lovely but too prominent for me so I painted over it with Porcelain doll MS acrylic paint. A pretty pinkish-ivory off white colour which toned down the paper nicely. I also used some pink paint in places to give the bird some depth and keep her from looking flat. Then she also got some Vintage Photo Distress ink and gilder’s paste on the edges. The wings got Porcelain Doll paint only on them, again to tone down the pattern.

think aloud canvas 3a

The bird cage was cut from grunge paper and gilded with a tube of gilder’s paste. Use it sparingly! I also used this on the edges of the canvas and on the torn/pushed back edges of the paper along the edges. Gilder’s paste is wax based gold you can apply with your finger or a sponge or a q-tip. It is very shiny (hard to tell from this angle but check the last photo with the flower) but I did buff it so you may be able to get a less reflective finish depending on how you work with it or the surface it’s applied to; I don’t know as I don’t have a ton of experience with it. I love how it turned out. I used wire and head pins to attach the beads at the bottom to silk ribbon which I threaded through the holes in the bottom of the bird cage. They are so much more twinkly IRL. I’ll talk about the flower later.

think aloud canvas 2a

I was looking though my vast selection of junk stuff goodies when I came across some vellum quotes and this one really resonated with me. I’m a very direct, outspoken and honest person and people who aren’t drive me CRAZY! I’ve never understood why everyone can’t be the same! I’ve had huge problems with making and keeping friends, especially as a teen and it took me a long time to figure out I was trying to make friends with the wrong kinds of people. So now I have friends who are near and dear to my heart, who truly listen to me and understand me, who I can really be open with and not think so hard all the time if they will judge me for what I’m about to say, I can just breathe and say what’s on my mind; this is one of the things in my life I cherish most. So I knew this quote had to be translated into something that I could see everyday, keep it close by and in a place where it could help me remember to always appreciate those friends.

think aloud canvas 6a

I chose the font, Scriptina Pro, which I found for free, then I typed out the quote and formatted it until I was happy with the spacing and size etc. and I printed it out. I transferred the text to my canvas and went over the transfer with permanent, lightfast, archival pen. Then I thickened the lines in some areas to add more interest. It was looking a bit flat and boring with all the same thickness of lines. Be sure not to use a water-based marker for this kind of work as it will fade much too quickly. (In retrospect, I used water-based inks in other places and probably shouldn’t have for the same reason but it’s going in a place with minimal sunlight. Pigment inks are more lightfast.) I don’t have a photo tutorial for this transfer technique but it’s a great way for getting the text onto your canvas and it’s not hard to describe.

Pencil Transfer Tutorial

  1. Print your wording or design on regular copy paper.
  2. Flip your paper over on a light table or bright window. Using a wide pencil like 0.7mm lead or wider (regular is 0.5), trace your design. Make sure you cover everything. Going outside the lines a bit is ok, just make sure everything is covered.
  3. Trim any excess paper around your design if needed.
  4. Tape your paper to your project making sure it is lined up perfectly. Use repositionable tape like Scotch brand or washi tape, Eclipse tape or painters tape but if you are unsure if these may lift up any previous layers of colour/media you’ve added (like chalk, charcoal, pastel or Pan Pastel), please check in an inconspicuous area.
  5. Trace your design with a pencil. What size you use will depend on the thickness of your lines. For fine lines like mine, not only did I use the finest pencil lead I had which was a 0.5 mechanical pencil, I kept rotating the lead to always have a sharp point. If your lines aren’t so fine, this may not be so important. You could also use some other writing tool as using a pencil isn’t crucial.

What you are doing is transferring the graphite on the BACK of the paper to the canvas (or other surface) so anything that applies smooth, even pressure could work so experiment. Maybe an embossing stylus? Tip of a bone folder? The line you will get is quite faint so if your eyesight is poor you may need magnifying glasses, a strong light, a magnifier attached to a lamp or otherwise or this technique may not work for you. Because the surface of a canvas is fabric (of course) and not stable, I did have to jam some stiff cardboard into the space between the fabric and the wood to get a hard surface to write on. Several pieces actually. I used laminated pieces that some with Spellbinders dies and they were perfect and slid in nicely due to the lamination.

This is a version of a technique I learned as a kid on school. We covered the back of what we wanted to transfer in pencil by scribbling back and forth very heavily. The con of this technique is that is leaves a lot of hand smudges as you do the transferring. With my technique, there is so little graphite on the back of the paper, I didn’t notice any smudging at all.

think aloud canvas 4a

I hand cut the corner by tracing a template I bought from Tattered Angels AGES ago, back when spray misting was in it’s infancy, and cutting it from grunge paper. I then painted it with highly lustrous pearl finish white paint by MS and covered it with Vintage Photo Distress ink which turned it into a cool metallic look. However, the ink isn’t stable on the paint despite two coats of fixativ so I don’t recommend this and I won’t be doing it again. Next time, I’d mix colour into the paint or buy a pearl finish paint in the colour I want rather than trying to alter it after it was dry. Then I added various beads to the nooks and crannies which was shamelessly CASEd from Gabrielle P, a designer for Maja Designs.

think aloud canvas 5a

Another shamelessly CASEd part of my canvas are the torn bits with contrasting paper underneath. To do this you must moisten the paper quite heavily and treat it firmly but gently while pushing it back and expect it to crack in at least one place. You can mist your paper but I used a q-tip to control the amount of water more carefully. Then start to wrinkle the paper. Start as if you only want a tiny area pressed down, don’t try to do too much at once and add more water often if you need it. If the top layer of the paper starts to pill, you have too much water, up to that point, you can’t have too much water. Gently scrunch it until you have the look you want. Many artists I’ve seen cover up the broken/torn area with flowers or ribbon but I liked it and felt I had enough going on with out adding any more.

think aloud canvas 7

I made this flower and it came about rather serendipitously. I was trying to replicate another type of flower but changed too much and it didn’t work out well. I wasn’t happy with it at all so I decided to hit it with the heat gun and all of a sudden, I though it was so pretty! So, I will refer you to the original tutorial then tell you what I did differently. Firstly, I used sheer fabric called georgette, not tulle and I cut them with pinking shears, not the way she called for and I cut 9 circles. I folded them like she did, in half first but then but I overlapped them in the center a bit more almost into thirds. However, this allowed all 9 of them to fit next to each other when sewn onto the backing. At this point, I really didn’t like the finish that the pinking gave the edges. To me, it just looked sloppy. So I hit the flower with the heat gun. At times, I separated one little section from the others so it wouldn’t melt too much or so I could melt it more as it seemed to get missed. In the end, it almost seemed like those flowers made from lots of little blossoms and I really liked that.

think aloud canvas 7a

The base of the canvas was prepped with acrylic paints on the sides in pink, turquoise and porcelain doll. Then I added some script stamping and toned it down with more porcelain doll dry brushed on. The base of the canvas is hard enough to see IRL and almost completely lost in photos. I used a lovely lace pattern DP then added some spray mist in Boss Lady which is much brighter and more dominant than I had hoped.  Two light sprays from far away and my background was almost gone. You can see a wee bit of it above. The lower right corner is a mix of Life stamps in various Distress inks and a few PTI colours along with some Hexagon stamps which you can see in the photo with the lettering.

think aloud canvas 8

The tree stencil was tacked down and sponged around the outside using Antique Linen Distress ink then traced around using the same pen I used to trace over the lettering. Then I used PTI inks to dry brush the colour onto the tree. To do this, you literally pick up colour from an ink pad with a dry watercolour brush, yes, it does take a long time but it game me the soft look I was going for. Then I die cut a TON of tiny white 5 petal tissue paper flowers and glued them together, I think 10 layers or so. Then I glued them to the tree, added chalk to the centers and fluffed them up to create spring flowers. This can all be see in the photo with the bird.

I hope you stayed with me this long! If so, you are a real trooper and deserve a medal! Thanks so much! I’m entering this in the Spring Home Decor Challenge in the Moxie Fab World. It’s randomly chosen so I have as much of a shot as the next person but I’m so proud of this I can only hope maybe there could be an Honourable Mention of something. If you like it, I hope you will leave a comment. If you do, you could also win a prize as one of the ways to win this challenge is to leave comments for participants! Click the link to learn all about it. Not long left so be sure to join in the fun!

This card was for Feb week 4 of Viva la Verve Sketches. The ones they post at SCS. My kids spilled water on my computer so we had to let it dry out before I could post it here. I don’t know if you have to use Verve to qualify to win or if you can only win if you have played all 4 sketches but I liked the sketch so I played anyway. (ETA: yep, all 4)

friends forever verve sketch

I am really proud of this one. It’s been ages since I used my old stand by of pink and brown. Feels good to come back home! I have a few tips for you in achieving this shabby look.

Tip 1: To get a beautiful distressed edge, add water before rolling, squishing and pressing the paper. It’s a softer look that just shredding the edge with a distresser or scissors or your nail. The opposite side of the paper will show which is a lovely, shabby look. I used a Q-tip and water with Perfect Pearls in it. Never pass up an excuse to add some pearlized water! but you can add some ink in it to colour the white edges if you wish, either to match your paper or a brown for distressing. If you want some torn sections, do that before or after because it won’t tear well while wet! See photo below for some close up areas.

Tip 2: Spritz with diluted colour mist using pearl water. Just a little bit gives it an aged, stained appearance. It can be subtle but really helps bring the card together. I used it on all the corners except the ribbon banner corner. Fill a Mini Mister by Ranger  about 1/8 full with water and to 1/4 full with ink. Test and adjust until you like the intensity. You may need less darker inks and more lighter ink.

Tip 3: When you look at a sketch, think beyond your initial impression of what items should be used for a particular component. The horizontal element in this case was a scalloped strip. I could have gone with a scalloped punched paper strip or a scalloped edge ribbon which would have been even more interesting. But this ribbon treatment is miles above both of those IMHO. And if you immediately thought of ribbon for the banners, try thinking of ribbon next time. Or vice versa. What is even more interesting is combining them!!

Tip 4: Stamp on non-traditional surfaces and in layers. Stamping on the doily didn’t turn out perfect but that's what I wanted. The tips of a couple letters ended up on the holes and the texture isn’t perfect (part of the stamp too) but it looks vintagey! I also stamped the music on the striped paper which already had some texture on it from the manufacturer. If it hadn’t, I would have added some texture or script or something to it.

Tip 5: This isn’t specifically a shabby tip but a general tip. Cut apart or unmount that wheel stamp you never use! They are cheap and a great source of images. I now have 12 different words and 2 or 3 images! I wouldn’t have used that wheel hardly ever! (I bought it knowing I would cut it apart based on someone’s recommendation) The music image I used is also a wheel I unmounted. I leave it naked, no EZ Mount even, so I can apply it freehand which gives it a shabby or grunge look depending on how much ink I use and how dark the colour is.

Do you like the tips? The angled photo with props? These are also changes I’m considering trying out though it may seem slow to adopt as I use up some older photos. Let me know. Only though feedback can I make sure you get what YOU want out of this blog!

Enjoy, Rebecca

Sweet Bee Card for Mojo Monday

I liked the sketch for this week’s Mojo Monday so much, I decided to make a second card using it!

bee mojo_thumb

I just bought this stamp set second hand and I was thrilled that it went so well with some new paper too! The yellow hexagons just screamed bee to me! I LOVE the shape of this bee; it is realistic without being creepily so. I have a huge bug phobia but it looks sweet stamped right? And no icky, overly detailed eyes (I find totally realistic eyes especially creepy). The stamp set includes a body stamp to make the bee yellow but I have no ink that even approaches a colour that would coordinate with or match this paper. So I paper pieced it instead which also gave it a sweet yellow halo! I LOVE how it looks. Can you tell this card is going to be hard to part with? {{ GRIN }}

Mojo257Sketch[6]

Did you notice what I stamped directly on the patterned paper? They already had ‘be.’ on the paper; I added the ‘Bee’. I thought it made for a cute play on words! Then I added a little ribbon tab in place of the flag in the sketch. If you ever like to enter the M0jo Monday contest, be warned that I’ve found the judges are particular about seeing you not deviate from the sketch too much. Sure you can swap out the shapes and add a layer or two as matting but they really like to see all the elements and in the same places and relative proportions. I won in July and made sure every element was on there! I added a bit of washi tape sticking out from under the largest panel for a bit of interest.

Enjoy, Rebecca

Scrapbook Steals August Blog Hop–Mr. Huey’s Mists

I am thrilled to be participating in my first (and hopefully not last) blog hop for Scrapbook Steals! If you aren’t familiar with Scrapbook Steals, it is my Number 1 FAVOURITE place to buy scrapbook supplies at a HUGE discount! And they often have products I’ve not even heard of or used before. Plus their sister sites for Kids, Babies and She for women are just as AWESOME! Their blog is amazing too so if you haven’t been there, be sure to start the blog hop there! I have a card and a scrapbook page for you today!

I received Taxi, a bright yellow Studio Calico Mr. Huey’s Mist to work with. Now if you know my blog, you know I am not so into bright yellow so the challenge was on. I used it to mist a sunset scene that this bright yellow was practically made for!

mr hueys sunset sympthy

I started by masking off the bottom portion of the card. Then I mixed the mist with a bit of water to dilute it in a spray bottle and misted the top portion. Then I masked off the sun area as well, added some pumpkin reinker and misted again. Then I misted a third and fourth time adding a few drops of rust red reinker each time until I was happy with the look.

Absolutely lovely coverage and it mixed very well with the reinker. I reversed the masks covering my sky and added a second torn mask to make the shoreline. I sponged in aqua ink for the ocean. Then I tore another mask similar to but not the same as the first. I applied this mask over the ocean leaving a small section to look like the froth of the waves breaking against the shore. Then I used several brown inks to sponge in the sand.

For the palm tree, I stamped it on very dark grey card stock and cut it out. Then I added ink direct to paper from the ink pad so it became a solid black silhouette. I added a sympathy sentiment and I was done! I think a sympathy sentiment was very appropriate as the sunset can symbolize the end of a life. Sad but sympathy cards are very needed and appreciated.

I have several other brands of mists and this is by far the easiest to mix. Thank heavens. Some of the other ones need several minutes of shaking before they are ready to use. And with Mr. Huey’s the colour you see is the colour you get. The others separate and become a gross colour so  you have to shake it in order to see the real colour if you forget what it looks like. Not very convenient if you ask me!

For my next project, I used a mask to create an interesting scrapbook page background. As I usually only create cards, I only bought a 6x6 mask. So I added it to opposing corners to add interest to the ‘white’ space I planned to leave on my layout. I added some water and white reinker to soften the colour somewhat. I also added some touches of a pink mist. I love how many ways you can use these mists!

mr hueys swim day

I was inspired by a layout by Maggie Holmes to use a banner across the page but I don’t have a banner die. Helloooo ingenuity! I looked at my dies to try and decide if I could cut down a square or a rectangle or… when my eyes settled on an ice cream die. Yeah! The cone makes a PERFECT banner! That was the most fun especially since I used up lots of scraps!

mr hueys swim day date closeup

I added the date ‘wheel’ to the top right but felt I needed to add some more round elements to the page. So I added the medallion stamped once on the right side of the larger photo and again in white on acetate under it. Made a nice triangle I thought. I try to keep design principles in mind more so when I scrapbook because it doesn’t come as naturally to me as card making. But I keep at it because I love the results!

mr hueys swim day title closeup

Adding things in odd numbers and in triangles tend to keep your layout more balanced. So I have three photos, pointy shapes in three places (stars in each corner and the banner), orange in three places: one photo, the title/banner and the date wheel; three circle elements and words in three places: the title, date wheel and journaling.
