Sounds Like More Fun Than It Is

Just like every other shag you've ever had...but with a twist!
Thought I'd momentarily lost my way and ended up at the sex shop instead of the grocer. I t has a place to stick your soap as well. I'll just leave it at that.

Moving along...

How about some yellow flares? Yeah, I thought you'd like those. How could you not love a pair of 70's bright yellow flares from Sears? The only thing that could make them better would be a matching jacket with crazy wide lapels...
Yes! Yes! Yes! (That's the suit talking, not the Shower Shag). But it wasn't really a bright yellow suit kind of day, so I stuck to an oversized gauzy shirt...
Yeah, that's how you wear yellow flares on a warm day.
I like these because they make my behind look almost miniscule (it isn't) and I feel strangely taller (I'm not).
White necklace on a white shirt? Why not? Summertime is short-make the best of it.

We hit several thrifts today, and I found my share of hideous 70's polyester maxi's. Lots and lots of Indian clothing as well (I'm a sucker for beautiful sari silks). Danny found more Homco for the walls (bless his heart) and eventually we made our way to the grocer where I had a bit of an angry old lady moment. You would have too. After nicely asking the young girl packing the groceries not to throw tins on the delicate fruit, she continued to do so. I looked in the sacks before leaving, wheeled over to the service desk and flagged down the store manager.

I have worked in a supermarket. I have been young. I know young people don't pay for groceries and have no concept of what it takes to feed a family. This wasn't the first time, in fact week after week I arrive home to find the produce I spent time selecting damaged before I can unpack it. For the most part, I shop at Aldi as the produce is nicer, less expensive and I can pack it myself avoiding today's aggravation. I don't want to see anyone lose a job, but these kids who come in for the summer and are gone aren't working to support themselves-they're working to buy apps. I have no idea if it will do any good, or if they will start training these kids not to abuse the produce, but I couldn't hold it in another second. I didn't spend time picking out nice produce to have it smashed. Does this upset you as much as it does I, or am I just behaving like a fussy old woman?

And you damn kids can get off my lawn too!

File Under, "What Was I Thinking?"

A white, knit, sheath dress. Mr. ETB blurted out, "Are you going to wear it without underwear, like everyone wore that sort of thing in the 70's?" I suppose it is a bit vintage looking. I will indeed be wearing undergarments, and am presently looking for a full-slip in the correct length. I do not, however have a clue what sort of shoes/boots one is supposed to wear with this sort of dress. This is likely why I've never gone for winter white. That, and I live on a farm. I wonder how long the dress will last before it gets splashed with mud getting in or out of the car? I paid $4.00 for it (new! How fantastic is that?) so I suppose it wouldn't be a terrible loss.

My fashion sense still firmly rooted in 1972, I bought this dress. I need a large, straw bag with flowers on it. Maybe a floppy hat. This dress set me back $7.00.

I hadn't really invested in clothing since Danny was born, as we had so many other expenses, and who needs nice frocks to have a child spit up all over them? He spit up an awful lot. Really, and awful lot. Still, I was starting to look a bit shabby, so I've slowly been replacing the shirts with frayed collars, worn shoes, and moth-eaten sweaters. I think my $11.00 was well spent, but if he spits up on any of them, I'm going to be annoyed.

I Wear The Awful Trends...So You Don't Have To

Sears is having another clearance sale, so I bought the boots I liked at 70.00 for 17.00. There's still plenty of winter left to wear them.

I came home with three dresses-this was the most interesting one. My mother had something like this, in 1970.

The bracelets. Danny loves them (he's been reading the Iliad) and I sort of like them as well...but I do feel a little Wonder Woman-ish wearing them.

Not pictured:

Patent leather, high heeled Mary Janes. Mr. ETB said I shouldn't wear them to the library because of all the elderly men who try to flirt with me. "They're not all pensioners" I reminded him-and proceeded to purchase the shoes.

A pink and grey stripped sweater-dress.

A black sweater dress.

Anyhoo, I bought new clothing at thrift store prices. I'm not being compensated by Sears for telling you to, get over there immediately. Really, I couldn't believe how much clothing I came home with for so little money. Mr. ETB came home with a 10.00 pair of Dockers.

Sears Clearance Sale

I purchased these at the Sears in Crossroads mall in Omaha.

I scored great stuff again this year. I'm set for Fall. The clearance items I bought were 50% off the original price, with an additional 40% off. That's how I ended up with six dollar dresses. Sears does not in any way sponsor my posts, I just really love buying end of season clothes for the price of thrift store clothes. I suppose I'm getting kind of middle class in my old age, but sometimes it is nice to have clothes that don't smell like mildew and cat pee.

Anyhoo, here's some of the highlights:

This looks better worn. Most of these dresses looked like sacks on the hanger, but they are flattering. I like the neckline on this sweater dress, and the gauge is very, very light. I also purchased it in a bright redish/orange dayglo-because I was too old for the look in the 80's and now I'm...well now I'm well...older. This is going to look so great with boots.

Again, it looks better on. I've lost enough weight where I can wear a cinched-in waist and not have it spill out in a muffin-top. That's nice. The t-shirt material is heavy and nicely cut so that it swings when I walk. I'm of the mind that all dresses should swing a bit when you walk. This is also shorter in the front with long sides. I can't wait for cooler weather.

I know, that's quite a bit of grey clothing. I did buy navy trousers, and there was that dayglo dress, but yeah, I really do tend to favour a boring colour palette. I also really like cardigans. This cardigan was five bucks. It came in a bright dayglo red as well, but I thought it best to draw the line at dresses.

And in other news, I can wear size six trousers, which just seems wrong at 125 lbs. That ought to be at least a size ten, but the clothing manufacturers think we're a bunch of idiots that don't know what size we really wear. Thankfully, years of thrift store shopping has made me pretty good at holding something up, and knowing if it will fit. I'm usually pretty close-within alteration range. I always buy clothes larger anyway, because cheap fabrics have a tendency to shrink. OK-I also have a tendency to grow-at least around the winter holidays. You don't want to squeeze into a micro-fine gauge sweater dress...or I don't anyway.

So get your butts over to Sears before all the good deals are gone.
