18 Jan 2012 - Astons Changi T1

Came to the airport and waited until Aston's starting business at 11.30pm. They were allocated the same seat as the last time. The leather covers were worn.

Medium-rare Prime Ribeye X'tra Cut ($18.50) with pasta salad and garden veggie. The waited served it to him instead, and looked a little surprised when told it was her. Girls eat big portions too! Hahaha. The pasta was a bit too soft, and was floury/powdery inside, so she left most of it untouched.

His medium-well Prime Ribeye ($15.90), with potato salad and onion rings. Smaller chunk of steak, but still good stuff. The potato salad seemed less tasty than before though.

Grand Sampler $13.90. Enjoyed the assortment of sausages, but it was a struggle for him when she claimed that she was full after a few bites-sized portions.

31 Dec 2011 - New Year's Eve

Bought the $7.50 Toffee Nut Frappe and Berry Cheesecake combo from McCafe, accumulated the third stamp and redeemed a complimentary Caramel Frappe. See that cheesecake hiding in the background?

Without prior reservation for dinner, they could only try their luck. Kiseki was fully reserved, and they had to join the long waiting list. Walked on and found some relatively empty restaurants along Orchard Road, but she insisted on going to the Bugis area for the Chongqing BBQ fish again. Went all the way there just to disappoint herself, it was full house, and the waiting time was at least half an hour. Probably not, their waiting list didn't look that short.

She already looked very glum, and glummer when she saw the queue at Ma Maison. Decided not to wait and continued, settling for the relatively empty NYDC.

Got 2 sets of medium well steaks, and another frappe for her. Cost more than $50 in total.

Something from a few days back, escargot from the supermarket. Ready for the oven. ~$8-9 a dozen-pack. Not that nice, some tasted muddy.

16 Dec 2011 - Gathering with U-mates

The group agreed to have a dinner gathering at Sizzler, Suntec City Mall. Three out of six attendees managed to meet up two hours before the stipulated time. These people sat at Coffee Bean to catch up while waiting for the rest to turn up. It was recalled that the same thing happened at the last gathering, the same few people reached earlier than agreed, and met up at the same Coffee Bean branch. Lots of chatter ensued, and nobody realised how much time had passed. It was time to get some seats at Sizzler.

It was quite a long wait, probably got seated at around 8pm. Immediately attacked the salad bar. Ok, no quite, it was after ordering a medium well Sizzler Steak.

First blood. Had some artichoke hearts, beetroot and assorted mushrooms later on. Totally forgot about their picture.

The main course of 225g steak. Most of the group had their steak done medium rare, but their stake turned out dry. Oddly, his medium well steak was very juicy, meat was still red, and juiced the plate all over. He was the only one who ate his potato skins too. This set cost $29.99++.

After dinner, they went for some drinks at Paulaner.

Probably because they haven't met up for quite some time, people kept wanting to continue their conversations. So they left for Xin Wang Hong Kong cafe before they lost their voice to the loud music.

Each had yet another drink, and someone also ordered a fried bread thingy to share. Check out that oily thing.

Mocha + coke + beer + green tea in one evening, the stomach's sure to throw tantrums the next morning. And it did.

03 Dec 2011 - Red Pot and Ma Maison

Got out of the house on this day to retrieve a key for a friend. Apparently, the friend's obnoxious colleague had withheld the key on purpose. Had a long wait before they finally could go off for a meal.

Enticed by the advertisement of rice noodle set with 15 sides, they walked into Hong Guo at Bugis Junction. Ordered some drinks to quench their thirsts first.

Salt rimmed mango margarita, $3.80++. Mock-tail version. The waitress initially got him a glass of some lychee drink, and left him trying to figure out which part of it was mango.

Mango freeze, $3.80++.

Shanghai dumplings, $5.80++. This dish had fillings of mince meat and chestnut.

The mains, $8.50. Condiments such as scallions, dried baby shrimp, were also included in the count. Anyway, this had prawns, 2 or 3 pieces of squid, ham, cuttle fish shreds, button and shiitake mushrooms, quail eggs, can't remember them all. Meat and eggs were to go into the big bowl of hot soup first, followed by the vegetables and lastly, the rice noodles. Just a regular bowl of noodles, he wouldn't eat this again at that price.

Went for a walkabout after the meal, and she had a ball of a time at the cosmetics department. Shan't go too much into that else it will never end. Let's view a picture of Christmas lighting outside the departmental store.

Had dinner at Ma Maison after her friend knocked off from work. It means "My House" in French, thanks to googling on his Android. The menu cover seemed to be of leather.

The table setting. Someone help name the design of the lamp-head? It has slipped his mind. The place was dimly lit and had soft music, love the ambience.

Starter of garlic butter escargots, $9.50++. The aroma was so distracting that the middle-aged couple at the next table kept looking over.

The soft and chewy morsel lasted for merely a few seconds. But the garlicky smell lingered in the mouth.

Tonkatsu for $15.90++. Lightly breaded, so it was not too oily. Meat was also succulent. He doesn't really have tonkatsu much, but enjoyed this. The shredded cabbage refreshed the palate, gearing him up for more food. Just kidding.

Black pepper sirloin steak for $22.50++. The beef-eater had this medium well, yet it was still juicy enough. It was a 200g portion, but looked slightly bigger than what they usually have.

Beef Stroganoff for $14.80++. Her friend had good comments for the beef, and lapped up the sauce with the omelette rice.

13 Aug 2011 - Pepper Lunch's curry rice set

Apologies that this came 2 weeks late.

She wanted to have the ribeye steak, while he saw the refreshed menu of curry rice and opted to have the pepper steak variant. (curry rice, pepper steak, huh?)

The curry rice set came with a complimentary egg, and curry in an Aladdin-style lamp. Spicy enough to have him perspire. Also, the portion of rice seemed a little huge. He had to struggle a little to finish it all.

19 Dec 2010 - Universal Studios Singapore

She could finally visit the castle at Universal Studios Singapore!

The first ride that they took was "Revenge of the Mummy". Bad choice, he ended up with a headache and she took quite a bit of time to recover. So they walked around a bit and took photographs with the random stars appearing on the street.

Had fast food for late lunch at Friar's... just one beef mince wrap, some potatoes and a drink. Unfortunately, only managed to take a photograph of the window in low lighting.

After roaming the park for one whole day, legs were aching and stomachs were grumbling. She suggested dining at The Mussel Guys. Though he had 2 bad experiences at the Vivo City branch, he was starving, no more energy to think up of another place.

Blue mussels - got 2 pots, 500g and 350g. They were so hungry that they almost finished the soup in the pots. Some of the mussels seemed to have gone bad though, maybe a bad harvest.

Her steak and prawn set - 140g done medium well, accompanied by a grilled prawn, broccoli and mashed potato. At least not something that had gone bad.

11 June 2010 at hot tomato

steak with shrimp - charred exterior brought a slightly bitter flavour, but that was all to it. he think the ones at pepper lunch are much better.

got a chocolate milkshake to fatten her up - double whammy.

some thoughts, seating area is quite cramped and service could do with some improvement.

F.I.S.H. 1-for-1 offer with cut-out

the littlest bro showed them a page in the straitstimes that screamed 1-for-1 dining with the cut-out. brought him along to the outing this time round.

his order of white fish - smelt a little weird to him, but littlest bro said he didn't smell anything out of the ordinary.

teriyaki ribeye - wife's favourite has got to be the ribeye. guess she was disappointed it came in slices and not a slab. that's for not reading the menu properly!

his herb sirloin (medium well) - the herb seasoning tasted special, but he didn't really like it. the steak wasn't that juicy either, even though the insides were still pink. still thinking about the steaks they had at pepper lunch the other day... mmm...

finally, for dessert. colossal carrot cake. just 1 slice for 3 of them, and littlest bro kept going for the icing. not as sinful as the one he had in the states, and more spongy texture was easily more acceptable.

back from the jungle

been a long while since the last post. did you think this went dead? almost. some quick updates anyway.

Feb 26 - even though he had a company function to attend, she still made the effort to make a improvised-recipe cheese cake for his birthday. probably guilty for forgetting it the previous year! can't help but smile when he sees this picture.

mushroom beef wraps that she made, didn't enjoy this too much, prefer chunky portions to thin slices. still have no idea why the sides of the beef were in yellow...

astons prime sirloin - with very-good-to-eat potato salad and onion rings. asked for medium well, but it seemed to be medium rare instead. not too bad for the price

astons prime ribeye - allowed her the more expensive cut, but with greens for sides - coleslaw and garden salad. she seems to have slimmed down a little, so sad!

say cheeze @ 313 somerset

slept in again, so they had to settle for late lunch. headed to cuppage plaza for the 1st level japanese restaurant, but turned out they closed at 2.30pm, and only re-opened at 6pm. too bad, they had to settle for the new malls on the opposite, orchard central and 313.

while in 313, they walked past "say cheeze" and the black angus sirloin looked tempting. got a table for 2, ordered the black angus sirloin (medium well) and a tokyo pizza. she further requested for a doubly sinful milkshake, very very thick and at a cost of $7.90++...

the black angus sirloin steak $18.90++ - insides still looked tender red, but not bloody. this sirloin's a thick chunk, unlike most other sirloins that they've had before. both of them thought that it was good. she commented that the whipped potato tasted different but she liked it anyway. color's a little on the brighter side too.

the tokyo pizza that she wanted ($13.90++). crispy crust, almost like a biscuit. came with teriyaki chicken and those usual flakes of he-forgot-what-you-call-them, very enjoyable.

close up of the tokyo pizza...

service was prompt and friendly, attentively topped up water and cleared the table. would go back again for the steak, and perhaps pizza.

kopitiam dinner

she made him wait around 15 minutes for her, yet she could still groan about being hungry. undecided what to eat, they scoured each level of plaza singapure, and landed up at kopitiam.

walked every store, indian food - no, malay food - no, beef noodles - no, roast meats - no... the female glutton ended up looking at the picture of a succulent-looking beef steak at the western food stall. anything goes for him, thus they ordered a medium-well beef steak, and a chicken chop. both with spaghetti. the vendor-auntie pressed him to add on a bowl of cream of mushroom with a piece of garlic bread for $2. he somehow nodded, and the bill came up to $21.

the beef looked a little on the thin side and a tad too salty. $12.90

the chicken chop was thinner than the one at ang mo kio s11, but the skin was crispy. again, the cook probably used too much salt. $5.90

the spaghetti had good colors with carrots and tomato pulp, but it still smelt of flour. reminded him of the few times he tried to make spaghetti at home.

soup had large chunks of shiitake mushroom. bread smelt and looked inviting, but the bite was disappointingly limp. $2

unfortunately, they were too hungry (gluttony) to take photos of the finale, pulut hitam and chendol. one hot, the other cold, which they both enjoyed digging from each other's bowl.

the story continues when they got home and had a showdown with steamed prawns, steamed promfret, braised pork and stir-fried wongbok, but... it had been a long day.
