The Light of the World

Those of you who know me already know that I love using evocative (sometime provocative) quotes to complement my jewelry. I'm an avid bookworm and am infamous for peppering conversations with arcane underused words. My husband always gives me the eye-roll when I pull some old-timey phrase out of my hat. There are so many nuanced words out there - why stick to the same boring limited lexicon?

When I'm reading and come across a passage or phrase that haunts me, I dog-ear the page so I can come back to it and pull the quote. Sometimes they're humorous, sometimes beautiful, sometimes they hurt.

My bread and butter is 20th century fiction---pre-1980s, if I can help it---and I've been on a huge William Kennedy kick lately. His Ironweed series mixes darkness, humor, beauty, and verve in a really delicious way:

" 'Four hundred dollars there, boy,' he said. 'Feast your eyes. The sky's the limit on this trip.'

I took the money into my own hand, counted it (fifties and twenties), tapped it on my knee to even its edges as I would a pack of cards, folded it, felt its thickness and heft.

'It's nice,' I said. 'What are you going to buy with it?'

'I'm going to buy the light of the world and bring it home,' Peter said.

'Where's the light of the world?' I asked.

'I'm not sure,' Peter said, 'we'll have to go shopping.' "

When I was creating these polybells, the little radiant textured suns never really struck me until they were already formed. Earthy warm hues, abstract glyphic textures, ragged organic forms. I formed these from polymer clay, textured, cured, painted, and sealed them. They're deliciously lightweight. Once I looked on the finished bells, I knew I needed to give them a name that dealt with light. The above quote was just perfect.

Art inspires art - a wonderfully endless circle!

Happy Wednesday :)

Radiate!

Over the past few months, I've renewed with something I used to do when I was little....
watercolor paintings :)

I've done some oil paintings (just a few) in the past, and various types of crafts where I'd paint wood with acrylic paints, etc.... but maybe it's the tie-dye hippie in my soul,
I've always been so incredibly attracted to the cool effects of watercolor paints.

So today, I though I'd share one of my recent paintings with you,
and how it inspired me to create the earrings that I'm showcasing here.

"See The Light" watercolor painting by Nathalie Lesage
This is a rather bold 'in your face' kind of sun, with stormy and happy colors in the sky. It was meant that way. This is a more raw, 'primal' painting, because the message that I wanted to spread in the world is very basic, but powerful:

The energy that you "radiate' out into the world comes from the core of your soul.
MAKE IT STRONG, BRIGHT, AND POSITIVE...
ENERGIZE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE AROUND YOU.

If you feel that your energy is lacking, weak, or negative, etc. Make time for yourself...
Rest, meditate, do some basic yoga, stretch, take some quiet time, breathe.

My painting inspired me to create this earrings design:

The energy of life in the circles, the 'rays' of sunshine in the hemp cords where I've tied tiny bright yellow glass beads, the stormy and happy colors of the sky in the center smaller flat discs.
Energy, positive and negative,
can be channeled and be put to work in a very uplifting way.

These cool frosted (etched) artisan lampwork glass discs come from Two Sisters Designs on Etsy.
Simple wrap of Sterling Silver, knotted hemp cords and suspended on Titanium Ear Wires.
Very light and, dare I say it... radiant? ;)
You can find these earrings HERE on my website.

It's your turn... go forth... and...  RADIATE!! :)
Have a beautiful day!

Into the Sun

You know sometimes you see beads that you just can't be without?  You may recognise the painted driftwood barrels that I've used here, especially if you admire the work of Lorelei Eurto (I think that's going to be most of you!).  As soon as I saw her designs with these Nature Scavenger beads, I knew I had to get some.  They're so cheering and just the thing to be using as winter slowly creeps away and makes way for Spring.  As you can see, we've had sun here today, in my corner of the UK.

That's what's to blame for this blue-ish picture!  Still, I reckon I'll forgive it - I just hope it hangs around!

These earrings are available here, in my Etsy shop

Bye for now, Claire
