Dublin Ohio is 3571 miles from Dublin Ireland and is home to a population of 41,751 people in the 2010 census. Again this is named after the Irish city and was named by a Dubliner called John Shields. History states that at the naming ceremony in 1810 Shields gave the following speech
"If I have the honour conferred upon me to name your village, with the brightness of the morn, and the beaming of the sun on the hills and dales surrounding this beautiful valley, it would give me great pleasure to name your new town after my birthplace, Dublin, Ireland."
The village grew, but not too quick and in 1970 the population was 681 and the village had become a small town. Around this time the 270 Interstate had been constructed and the population exploded and in 1987 the Town became a City after reaching a population in excess of 5,000. As the city expanded it took in different townships which were close by, Dublin is now a suburb of Columbus which is the birth place of the golfing legend Jack Nicklaus.
The Dublin Ohio Historical Society has some wonderful stories, including one where Dublin missed out on being the Capital of Ohio due to a game of poker.
Another interesting story associated with the area dates back also to 1810 where an Indian chief called Leatherlips was executed on the orders of his brother Roundhead for signing away native lands and witchcraft. He was executed in a cave in the Dublin area called the Olentangy Indian Caverns and now there is a monument in his honour in Dublin today which is quite strange in looks to say the least.
