Original Oil Painting Sparkle

Nature's Sparkle

12" x 12"
Painted on gessobord.

My main goal in this painting was to make it sparkle. I used a reference photo from Valerie Bassell of Sacket Brook, I posted it below. I love the strong white light on the water and large rocks. I thought it might be too intense so I added small hints of light on the tree above and the right bottom foreground. I also intensify the water color to draw your eye to follow it as it falls off the edge to the water below. This was a little harder than most landscapes I have done but I feel it was well worth it. I know how much our eyes follow light and that is so important to create a nice flow in the painting. This was great practice for that. Thanks Valerie for the inspirational photo!

Original Oil Painting First Snow

First Snow

Sold

12" x 12"
Painted on gessobord.

I am trying out an online coursed from Richard Robinson. My goal is to become more expressive and looser in my landscape paintings. In this painting I am trying to convey a very old tree and fence that have seen better days. The old tree still has a few fall leaves hanging on, so hopefully the tree will hang on for many years to come. I hope you like my first Richard Robinson's assignment. I have three more to do.

Original Oil Painting Boulder Wash

Boulder Wash

12" x 12"
Painted on gessobord.

I painted this using Cindy Deadrick's photo for inspiration. It reminds me of the Wisconsin Dells area in my state: Wisconsin. It has been so cloudy here for weeks that I am having trouble getting a good picture of it. I will put it away for today and take another look at it on a sunny day. Thanks for viewing.

Well I tried photographing it again and no luck. It was another grey, windy day in Oshkosh,Wisconsin. I can't remember the last time I saw the sun for more than a few minutes. The price we pay for not having to shovel snow.

Original Oil painting Pathway by River

Pathway by River

Sold

12" x 12"
Painted on gessobord.
I am really mixing up my subject matter this month. I painted flowers, landscapes and birds. I wonder what I should paint next. I like to mix things up a bit to see if I can incorporate different techniques into different subject matters. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. In this painting I used white wash to push back the farthest horizon line and quite down parts in the river. I did not flick edges in this as I do try in my still lifes and animals. I am not sure why other than I am not sure where to use it.  When I get close to finishing a painting it is more important the brush strokes, thickness of paint and color that are interesting. Subject matter is just the theme in which I paint lovely lines, shapes and paint. Paint the Paint, did I just say that? Maybe I am finally learning something new.
