Sketch This 47 & Triple the Sketch 3

10:15 PM & I managed to get 3 cards and 2 layouts completed today.

I'm pleased with my progress & would like to get a couple more done tonight, but not sure how much longer I'll be staying up.

I posted my first project; CPS 62 here & these next two projects are using Sketch This 47. All products on these following projects are sponsored by Just Let Me Scrapbook. AND, if you go here, you can read about the contest they are currently holding with a $25.00 gift certificate prize!! I'm trying to do a card & layout for each sketch now, which helps me get more done:)
I used a Dymo labeler for the "dear friend" part. That's why there is a glare.
I found a new sketch site titled Triple the Sketch & the following are using Sketch 3.

So, that's all for now. If I get anything else done tonight, I'll post it tomorrow!! TFL

CPS 62

I'm on a mission today.
Daddy is helping Ashlyn ride her bike & I'm doing NOTHING but scrapping!!!
I have loads of laundry, a sink full of dishes & a messy house, but today I'm not caring.
I'm scrapping!!

And to prove that, here's my take on CPS #62! I love the bright colors, so springy, something we didn't get to experience this year!

Hoping to have more projects to post later today. I'm off to work with 2 new kits I got Friday:)

Middle Child Syndrome

I suffer from it.
It truly does exist
And you won't believe it, unless you're a middle child
If you're not.........you'll never understand

I have 2 girls. I will not have one suffer this horrible syndrome.
My youngest would reak havoc on the world if she were a middle child
Well.......she actually already does & she's not a middle child?

This post is really about my 2nd child
Not about the fact she's not a middle child
But about the fact that she ACTS like a middle child

~She HAS to go to the bathroom EVERYTIME we are in public. #2............ALWAYS!!!
~She's not one that you can "let walk & hold your hand mommy!" Nope, not her.
~At the young age of 3, she completely understands lieing & don't let her tell you she doesn't:)
~She still sleeps in her crib & we, the parents, are truly afraid of trying to move her to a "big girl bed"
~I truly believe "I can't" were the first words she learned
~She believes the only way to get something is to cry, scream & demand, all at the same time. It's not effective otherwise

And, last, but certainly not least, my all-time favorite:

~"I can't because my elbow hurts"~

Now, tonight I want you to dream about her being a middle child.
Now feel sorry for me:)

Something to think about.

As I get ready for the weekend, I have a headache & I'm feeling sorry for myself.
I've been busy all week, up at the dance studio, among other things.
Though I normally look forward to weekends, not so much this weekend.
I'll be at the studio again on Saturday, only to leave to get Ashlyn from a bday party & run her to another bday party, then home to change & head to the campground where the in-laws are camping.

I have 2 new kits I want to scrap with & I'm not excited about this weekend at all.

This made me stop & think................really think!! I hate it when I think:)

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!!

Pencil Lines 81

I have a confession.................................sometimes I live directly on the edge & it makes me do *wild & crazy things*. Wild & crazy things such as this:

What is this, you ask? Why.............it's Pencil Lines #81 sketch that I used for a CARD!!!
GASP!!!!!
Pretty daring...........isn't it?

Told you I live on the edge!! and Yes, this card is big. I think this is the largest card I've ever made......I think? I also already have Mother's Day cards made, but w/the flower, I figured what the heck. Dang it......................there I go again being *wild & crazy!!*

So, since I really have nothing worth writing about, I thought I'd share a few things:

1) This lady, not only makes me laugh, but she "speaks" to me (or about me?)!!
2) Is this a word? If not, it should be, because I likey it. This lady just rawks......love her too!
3) I really like this title. I see the makings of a layout using it.
4) This is where I like to shop & if you haven't stopped in, take advantage of this.
5) If you've never browsed here for inspiration...........OMGarsh.....you must!!!!!
6) Thanks to this sweet lady, we had a wonderful supper tonight. I didn't copy her recipe, but I "borrowed" the idea & marinated my pork tenderloin in a Vinagerette while baking & it literally "fell" apart. I've NEVER had a tenderloin do that!!

That's all for now..............it's past my bedtime!!!

Pencil Lines 81 + Observations

First, did you notice I changed my blog template AGAIN? I love to change it & keep telling myself I'm gonna add my banner..............but I think I enjoy changing the templates more.

I'm surprised at how quickly this came together, though it still took me a couple of hours. This is my take on Pencil Lines #81 sketch. I really like the sketch, for several reasons: 1) It incorporates more than 1 picture, at least if that's how you interpreted the sketch, and I did & 2) The circle. If you look at my work, that is one thing you'll rarely find on my projects............circles. I know some people that have made it somewhat of a "trademark" of their work, whether they realize it or not. I like it & I'm glad I was able to incorporate it, rather then try to get away with a square or rectangle. I'm still going to journal, but haven't decided "where" yet. Since I took this picture, I added a sweet Jenni Bowlin, rub-on bird on the "s" of "self." He's looking down & he's too cute. So, I"m not wanting to take away from the title. I'll think of something though.

I've also been observing things of late........it's what I do best. As most of you know, I enjoy sketches. They're a great way to kick-start creativity & who doesn't need that from time-to-time. So................my observation is all the new "sketch challenge blogs" popping up everywhere. It seems everyone wants to have their own sketch challenge blog AND they're all holding design team calls for them. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not bad-mouthing these new ventures. I truly enjoy a good sketch & I even wanted to try for a recent call, but decided against it w/my upcoming summer schedule. BUT, it did get me thinking of something I'm sure a lot of us think about from time-to-time. What if "I," little ole' me had a sketch blog & held a design team call. Don'tcha just kinda wonder who all would apply for your team? Would you get some "well-known" names, some "no-names" that totally rawk the scrapping world? Or would you get no one at all? Don'tcha just wonder?

I do!!

A Productive Weekend & CPS 61

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend. I did!!

We had an annual get-together on Saturday with friends & family. It turned out to be absolutely
gorgeous & the girls had a blast. It's always good to catch up with friends you don't see too often.

Sunday was spent outdoors as well. I weeded our flower beds, raked them in preparation for some weed-killer & new pine straw. They look good already I'm glad I got it finished. I also washed my truck, which was still wearing it's "bug" attire from our trip down south. I ended up getting too much sun on my back, which surprised me because I didn't realize it was as hot as it ended up being. We ended the evening with grilling some steaks, which we haven't had in forever. The girls were exhausted from biking & sun & retired to bed 45 mins earlier then their usual.

So, that leaves me to scrap, which I'm always excited to do. I did finish up CPS 61 & this layout, which has been sitting on my desk since late Thurs/Friday. Poor Camryn, when she was little, she looked like a pudgey little boy if I didn't dress her like a girl. A lot of the baby pics I took around the house make her look like a boy. I hope she doesn't hate me when she gets older:)

I'm hoping to work with the new Pencil Lines sketch too, so wish me luck!!

Evolution of a scrapper

I actually finished this yesterday, but was really hoping I'd be able to do another. I have no idea what I was thinking. This pic was taken Feb 2006ish & I did use my Fiskar border punch on the top & bottom of my background paper. Can you tell I'm lovin' these punches. Now why did I go sell all my punches on Ebay 2-years ago?

So, last night while I'm trying to sleep & couldn't because of my coughing fits, I started thinking of how I have evolved in my scrapping...........where it started, where it has taken me & where I am now. My mind started spinning, so to entertain myself, I think I'll lay it all out:

I started scrapping in 1998, at a time when everyone cut their pictures out w/decorative scissors & drew shapes, free-form on their paper with pens & stuck stickers wherever they landed on the paper. If you didn't start at that time...................that's good.............you didn't miss much because it's all come full circle, minus the sticker sneeze. My style quickly evolved into a clean, linear look. Very blocked & very much like Cathy Zielske's work. I did ALL my layouts in 2-pagers & it took me days, sometimes a week or more to do ONE layout, which was ALWAYS 12x12.

Jump forward to 2004 & I make a decision to start making & selling handmade items on Ebay. Once again, a totally different style with lots of machine-stitching & photo matting, but a new & profitable experience. By 2005 my style was trying to change some and though I wasn't as clean & linear as I had been, I was still a clean scrapper. I decided to dabble in on-line design teams & thus started my venture of entering on-line contests & submitting for design teams. This was truly a whirlwind event. I had User IDs on every on-line message board, uploaded pictures everywhere & actually got on the first design team I tried for. I still continued to enter contests & try for more teams, including manufacturer teams..............what was I thinking? This was all in my plan to "make a name for myself in the scrapping world," or so I thought. It wasn't long before I was getting tired of all the message boards & submitting projects only to be rejected, so after this one design team call, I decided to email the owner & ask her why I wasn't selected for her design team. I figured this was a very strategic move on my part, as it would help me to "learn & move forward" in the whole "making a name for myself in the scrapping world," plan. What I wasn't prepared for was the answer she gave me. Keep in mind, by this time I prided myself on a style that would be considered "no style." I had many friends tell me that I could upload 10 layouts & if it weren't for the pictures, it would be hard to choose which were mine because my style was diverse enough that no 2 looked the same. So, back to making a name for myself..................plain & simple, she liked my work, but I was a "vintage scrapper" and she needed someone w/a more ecclectic (Elsie Flannigan) style. Vintage scrapper? WHAT?????????????????

I couldn't be more confused...........me a vintage scrapper? But as I perused the projects I sent her, it became glaringly apparent that is, in fact, what I looked like...........a vintage scrapper. I had gotten in a rut of using lacey trims & flowers w/almost all my work & had not even noticed. What happened to my diverse work? In fact, I decided right then & there I had to change my style, something I have NEVER knowingly done. My work has always been what it has been, I don't care who does & doesn't like it.............I do this for ME. BUT, I did not want to be a labeled a particular type of scrapper, so being pegged a "vintage" scrapper wasn't necessarily a bad thing............it was being labeled a "particular" type period!!! I was very surprised to find that getting out of my "vintage" style was harder than I thought it would be, but I succeeded.

So, I eventually land another design team & then another & in the meantime, started submitting my work. I even had a couple of ladies helping me "clean-up" my work so that it was "publish" material. One friend was the best..........she's not only accomplished in getting published, but she's worked w/various manufacturers & design teams. Her advise was the best. Some of my other friends.................couldn't say the same for them. When someone can't say a single positive thing about your work, or anyone else's for that matter, you don't need them & I definitely didn't. It's not that I couldn't take constructive criticism.................I can, but to find something wrong with EVERY thing I did? Whatever.

Jump forward to April 2008. I'm on one design team, no message boards, I've been published in several magazines & I'm happy. In fact, I couldn't be happier. I do not have an inner desire to participate on message boards, upload my projects to on-line galleries or be on design teams. I'll be honest...............I like being published for the "free" stuff it offers. Whether it's the money, product or free magazines..................hey, that's what I want. I enjoy my blog, the friends I've met & the challenge sites I visit.

So, what with all the "making a name for myself?" I don't really know what type of name I was trying to make? I NEVER wanted to be big in the industry & I really never wanted to work for a manufacturer, even though I thought at one time it would be neat, so I guess in the end, I'll just stick with the name I have.....................the on-line User ID I've become known as............duchessofexcess and ya know what? I'm fine with that..................just fine!!!

A few random things................

I don't have anything to share today, as far as scrapping is concerned. I'm working on a layout & it's coming slowly. Maybe I'll have it finished tonight? In the meantime, I thought I'd share a few more random things about myself that maybe you did, did not know or care to know. Either way, here goes:

1) I don't like to sleep under sheets - I'm cold natured & they stay cold. I love blankets
2) I'm left-handed or ambidextrious - You might already know this, as I love to let people know I'm left-handed. Makes me unique:) None of my girls are left-handed though only because this gene is passed through the father & since I'm not a father, no left-handed kiddos
3) I never learned to ride my bike w/no hands - Sad isn't it. I remember this as we're teaching Ashlyn to ride a bike & daddy is riding w/no hands, on the handlebars backwards & me..........I'm good to just not fall down.
4) I worked as an ATT 800 operator for 6-months - Really didn't like that job..........very boring
5) I like ice-cream with nuts & chocolate chunks - I have to have that crunch in my ice-cream
6) I like to research things - I don't know why exactly, but I find a certain thrill in it & can get obsessed with researching a subject until I've exhausted it.
7) I'm not a trendy person - Now I realize I might be seen wearing some of the latest fashions from time-to-time, but this is not me by nature. See, I shop for clothes & by doing so, I can only assume that clothing stores will have the latest fashions on hand, thus I inevitably end up buying something that might be considered trendy. My point, I don't "seek" out trends or fashions & really could care less. I am who I am, not because of what I wear, so don't let my clothes tell you otherwise....................what do they know anyway?:)

And because I'm not one to "go with the flow," I'm going to end this on only 7 points!! Why? Because I live JUST LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CPS 60

Here's my take on the CPS 60. I like this sketch............so many possibilities really. As you can see, I turned mine, but it didn't start out this way. The card actually started vertical.....not sure what happened. It also took me 2 days to finish this. It has sat on my desk since Monday without a sentiment. I couldn't figure out what I wanted it to say or where & how to put it. Anyway, I decided on this & like it well enough.

In other news, Stanford 9 testing started today. For those of you that don't live in the South.............be thankful!! Our school systems are definitely not the best & unfortunately, our teachers are geared to teach around these tests instead of teaching the kids the way they learned in college. So, my 2nd grader started her first of 6 days of 2 1/2 hours testing each day. Yup, 2 1/2 hours, uninterrupted, for 3 days this week & then 3 more next week. And if you don't think a 2nd grader doesn't stress about these tests? Think again..................it's drilled in their heads ALL year long, from day 1 til they are so nervous as to whether or not they are going to do good. I think my girl deserves a Starbucks today:) Okay, well maybe not a caffeinated Starbucks, but something delish anyway!!!

Otherwise, not much else going on. I have LOTS of things to get accomplished for the upcoming dance recital end of May. It'll be here before I know it & then I can breathe. I'm looking forward to summer already, but then again, that brings Summer classes *sigh*

Have a great Tuesday!!

Weekend Scrapping & sickness.......................

We're still fighting the "crude." Today is the first day I've felt 1/2-way decent & even craved some sushi!! Decided on carry-out, just in case it didn't set well w/my stomach. Ashlyn started throwing up Thursday night, stayed home Friday & spent the whole day in bed. In fact, the 2 of us could hardly stay awake until daddy got home to take Camryn off our hands. We were both asleep by 8:30!!! I think we're on the upswing though & my creativity seems to be better.

For this first layout, I have to give credit to someone I've mentioned before.............Christine Middlecamp. If you've never been to her blog, go check her out.............she's very inspiring with her work.

I got this paper & had NO clue how to use it. I noticed she used it & decided to make my life easy................I lifted her layout. I put her's first & then mine. Not an "exact" lift, but definitely close enough. I particularly love the photo she used for this layout & envision her taking it.

Nothing special about this layout, except I've always loved this photo.

Aside from watching a new episode of L&O, at least one I've never seen, nothing else new. Hope you all have a blessed Sunday!!

With the current cost of gas prices, it's almost cheaper to shop on-line, so if you're looking for a discount, don't forget to check them out.
In other news...........................there is no news. As of yesterday, Wednesday, I thought I was on the upswing & actually ventured from the house. By the time I got home last night, I had a cough & "that" sick taste in my throat. I was in bed by 10:00 last night!!! Then, at 3:00 AM this morning, my stomach started up again. So, I'm definitely not myself, but life goes on.............I have way to much to do to stay home today. So, if I see you today & you keep your distance, I'll completely understand!!
We also went & got Ashlyn a bike more fitting an almost 8-year old. Surprisingly, she's been gung-ho about learning to ride her bike & the 3-year old Dora bike just wasn't fitting her long, lanky legs:) So, off to Target we went & came home w/a shiny, pink & purple one w/the fringe on the handlebars. Now all she needs is the playing card clothes pinned to the wheel & she's set!! We did let her practice last night & she was riding by herself. Of course, she had no idea, but 90% of the time, daddy wasn't holding onto her. I think she'll be a pro by next week........................okay, maybe not, but close!!!
Alright, off to get myself dressed. Noon just crepted up on me!!
(darn Blogger for taking out my spacing!!!)

A card & Disney Pictures

Here's a card I made over the past 2 days. I ended up sick Monday & today. Some sort of stomach bug that kept me at home. Still not 100%, but life does go on. It did zap me of all energy & mojo. I came up here, sat & stared. I guess that's why it took me 2-days to complete this card. Anyway, more Sassafrass papers..............yum!!

The rest of these pics are from our trip to Disney/Epcot/Hollywood Studios/Animal Kingdom. I'm REALLY lovin' these pics & I emphasize "really" because I didn't have to take them:) For once, I'm in more than 1 picture................WOOHOO!!! Not that any of you care, but it will make scrapping these pictures more fun for me.............proof that I actually do exist.................there is a real person behind that camera lense!! I hand-picked a select few, as there are way too many to post & bore you with, but some of these will be definite 1-page layouts because they command such. Take the picture of Allan & Camryn laughing in the stroller. They were laughing hysterically!!! I mean.........come on..............what would two 3-year olds be laughing hysterically about? I don't know, but the picture is definitely scrap worthy!! And then there's the one of us in line. Isn't that what these trips are all about? Hurry up & wait!!! Boy..............we got that down pat & this picture is proof!! And the last picture............isn't that the sweetest? I know it's not for William & Brian, but those two were so tuckered out & they were so dang cute. I'm glad we got this picture too. Good times folks..............really good times!!

So, that's all I have. Hopin' the mojo comes back, but if not, that's fine. My week is usually busy from Tuesday through Friday, so not much time to scrap anyway:( TFL & have a great night!!

CPS, Pencil Lines & Basic Grey

I've been productive today & would do more, but Spring Break is over & I need to get back into some sort of sleep routine. No more staying up until 1:00 & sleeping in until 9:00:)

This first card is from CPS's current sketch, which is hybrid. Betcha didn't know I dabbled............did you? Yep, I have a simple HP program that allows me to do some digi stuff & from time-to-time, I'll dabble. Charity Hassel, a designer for CPS came up w/the hybrid idea & when I saw her card, I immediately realized........I have that same kit by Jessica Sprague. So, when I opened my software program, it happened to be the kit uploaded, so I worked with it. I realize it doesn't look too much like the sketch, but the ribbon is like the arrow & I only used 2 flowers, instead of 3. The Bazzill Kraft cardstock, buttons & Heidi Swapp chipboard letters are my "non-digi" embellies.....thus making it hybrid. I'm happy with it.

This card is CPS 58. I had a different idea originally, but LOVE how this turned out. My "pot" is a label holder I cut in half.

This layout is of pictures I just took Saturday night. Yes, my almost 8-year-old does not know how to ride a bike. But, in her defense, she's a dancer and a dancer can't risk falling & breaking a limb! Okay.................so that might not be true, but it sure sounds good. This is based off of Pencil Lines sketch 77. This worked out perfectly as I took a ton of pictures & picking 5 wasn't hard. I think I have all the new Sassafrass papers too, so I'm not finished with them:)

This layout was based off the sketch in the current Basic Grey newsletter. I didn't realize when I took the picture, I took it crooked. I used several techniques on this, such as painting the edges of my Heidi Swapp ghost heart, using my Fiskar border punch & paper tearing. I only mention this because I don't think I normally do this many on one layout.........I'm a pretty simple scrapper.

So, that's all I have for one-day...............now back to my regularly scheduled life!!

Why I scraplift & use sketches...............

My brain is very random today.
Full of all kinds of thoughts.......more specifically.............random thoughts
Ever have one of those days?

So, for a couple of weeks now, my brain keeps going back to why I use sketches & scraplift and I have this urge to explain, though I really don't know why, because it doesn't matter to me what others think, but here goes:

I like to scraplift for a ton of reasons. For me, scraplifting is rarely an exact lift. In fact, I usually take a layout & when all is said & done, you can't tell I used another as a guide at all. In these cases, the scraplift is more of a "sounding" board for my ideas. Regardless, some of my reasons are listed below:

1) I like the color scheme used
2) I need to use the same number of photos on my layout
3) I have those same products & boy do I need to use them. This has been my biggest one of late. I don't think people grasp exactly how much product I truly have. In fact, it's border line obsessive & to think there are starving countries & I don't say this lightly. So, as I see layouts in mags using products that are collecting dust in my scrap room, I want to dig them out, use them & move on.
4) I love the technique or embellies used, which means I really scraplifted the use of embellies, but not necessarily the layout.

Sketches...............these are a whole new animal in themselves. I used to have the hardest time w/them, but I find them liberating. I know lots of people have a hard time w/them, but once you get "used" to using a sketch, it can be very liberating. Take my layout I posted last night, using the Sketch This sketch. If you look at the sketch, it might be hard to see their sketch in my layout, BUT, it was my sounding board. You will be amazed at how easily the ideas start to flow once you have an idea & that is the wonder of sketches. They provide a wealth of ideas, whether it's the photo placement, number of photos, embellie ideas, techniques you don't normally use, etc. If you haven't tried your hand at sketches, check out my links on the right. My favs are Pencil Lines & Sketch This, but there are a TON of them out there & I'm not here to advertise for any one or other. Even ScrapBooks Etc. has some in every issue, as does Valerie Salomon & Basic Grey.

So, now that you know why I scraplift & use sketches, please sleep better tonight. I know these thoughts have caused much tiresome nights. In the meantime, while you are sleeping better, I have a house to clean & maybe some scrapping to do. And for those that wonder.............."how the heck does she find time to scrap?" That answer is simple: I make time for what I want to do & I'm a VERY efficient person:)

Sketch This & Scraplifting...........

Weather here has been stormy & rainy.....perfect scrappin' weather. Ashlyn's been at her bf's since last night, so just me & lil' Camryn. Poor thing:)

Since I'm not trying out for the Sketch This design team (not that I would make it), here's my take on their sketch. It was for either a card, which I posted yesterday, or layout.....here's my layout using my Label Tulip kit, which was full of new Sassafrass stuff. This is out of my comfort zone, especially with the colors, but if it all came together in a kit, it's supposed to match...............right?

These next 2 are scraplifts. I'm pretty brain-dead still (vacation will do that to you) & even scraplifting was a challenge for me. Both were lifted from the current Scrapbooks Etc., with this first one being a lift of the cover. I really do like the new Wild Saffron by K&Co & already have this entire line of papers & matching embellies. Once I was finished w/this, I realized I had already scrapped this photo *sigh*

This is a lift of one by Robyn Werlich. I condensed mine to a horizontal 8.5x11 & made a few minor changes, but the overall look is the same. I had the HARDEST time w/this one & I don't know why. If you look closely, there are no embellies..........just paper & cardstock?

I'm hoping to get a little more done tonight. I wanna work with 2 Pencil Line sketches, a Basic Grey sketch & some cards? We'll see:) TF stopping by!

Sketch This Card sketch

I'm home from Disney & exhausted!!!
I'm unpacked, house is clean & currently doing laundry.
I'm efficient that way.

As hard as it might be to believe, I, personally, didn't take a lot of Disney pictures. I opted to take my 75-300 lense & just didn't like having to lug it around everytime we went on a ride. So, after Day 1, I tucked it away in the truck, never to be removed again. The friends we went with took pictures, so I'll be getting a CD & wishing I had taken more pictures, but for now.............I'm fine.

In the meantime, here's my take on last week's Sketch This card sketch, which is actually for their design team call. Contemplated submitting, but decided against it, as I'm getting ready to get real busy with Summer almost here. Lovin' the new Sassafrass papers & YES, I realize my owl's eyes are crooked, but can't fix it now.

I'm hoping to scrap tonight. I've got 2 kits waiting to be played with & I missed scrapping while we were gone. In the meantime, I'm going to take a nap & will post Disney pictures later.
