Our Egg Friend

Makyra has decided that it's OK to go across the street without us. So, how do you teach a two year old that streets are scary and they can get hurt?

...our egg friend.

Makyra and I made a face on an egg (much like the picture from the internet to the right). We brushed her hair a little and gave her a name. Then we went outside and she tried to squish her with her hands, which she couldn't do. I told Makyra how unsafe it was to cross the street. I then rolled our egg friend into the street and Dan drove the car around and squished it.

Poor Makyra was so shocked that her egg friend had been crushed into a puddle of gooiness and shell. We let her look at the shell and told her that cars can hurt us and we need to stay next to Mommy and Daddy so that they can keep us safe near streets.

Part of me still feels a little bad, but not too much because it worked. She hasn't ran into the street since and whenever she sees a car coming she gets real close to us and hold our hand. If she forgets we just remind her about her egg friend and she seems to get the hint.

You are such a good mom. I probably just would yell or give them a time out. That is a much better way to teach. You are awesome!

How traumatizing! Loosing an egg friend! (haha, what a GREAT object lesson though) I'll have to remember that one when we have little ones.
