Haleigh's last 4th grade book project

Haleigh's last book project of the year was to make a cake representing the book that she read. Can you tell what book she read?
James and the Giant Peach

1 more cake

I had a friend who said she was done with making cakes because of the time commitment and having a young family etc., then I kept seeing all these cakes she kept making. And if you see my disclaimer on my last wedding cake, I was done for awhile too. BUT... it's pretty theraputic, and my visiting teacher needed one for her grandson's 12th birthday today, (and I could use a little spending $ for this weekend in Vegas) SO:

A cake for Chelsi & Jordan

Top: Actual Cake                                                 Bottom: Inspiration
Thank goodness I had to go to SLC yesterday for a business meeing so I was able to stop at Orson Gygi and get some ivory gel. Chelsi wanted lemon... and in my pregnant state I called Curtis Bakery and had them bake the 12' bottom layer. Then today I made a lemon butter cream filling. It's a basic buttercream that I use butter flavored shortening and add lemonade concentrate. It was SO yummy. Sure hope it tasted good with the cake! :) I also picked up a stensil to try my luck at some sort of design like the inspiration cake. It was surprisingly easy. You just stick it to the fondant with a little water and spread royal icing over it. Viola!
Disclaimer: This is also the last cake I will be making while pregnant or for awhile thereafter. If you need my friend Amy's # just give me a call... I will happily refer you to her.

Jessica & Rodney's cake

Our friends' daughter is getting married tomorrow. So it's late and I just finished the cake. Her aunt was going to make it... but I saw how stressed that makes the aunt at the last wedding which was I think less than 6 months ago... and family should be there to enjoy the day and visit etc. So I told Kaatje (the MOB) that I would be more than happy to make the cake. So she finally agreed to let me, and this was a fun one to do. I got to get some pearl molds (which I let my friend Amy try first! :) So I'd know how they work!) on this cake:
Some day Amy and I will have a bakery where we will have people who bake and do all the grunt work and we will decorate!! :)
So anyway, I got to use some new methods and even though I've got a little case of the "bah-humbugs" right now it was really fun to do this cake. I hope they love it when we deliver it tomorrow! It took me from 4pm til 11pm, only the bottom is real and I put a little orange extract in the chocolate buttercream frosting... IT IS SO YUMMY!!

Labor of Love

Our hospital here has an annual charity event called The Jubilee of Trees. They raise all sorts of $$$ for all sorts of things for the hospital. I always loved going to see all the trees, ginger bread houses, crafts, Santa. We took the kids to a few Teddy Bear Picnics, I've donated a wreath, Jen and I tried our hand at a ginger bread house (see Nov 2008 post) and I even designed a tree one year... (I'll have to find the picture and post it) Anyway... this year the gingerbread coordinater called me... so I agreed to try again. But I wanted it to be cute, not like my D- project from 2008. So here's what I'll take on Wednesday to donate. Not exactly full of candy, but I think it turned out cute. The kids play with their violin group on Sunday at 6pm... I'll have to wander over and see if anyone purchased it. Brittan is working on a MANSION! I went over tonight and helped with his roof, can't wait to get a picture of his too.

Got the picture! Isn't it great?

Emma's first birthday cake

Jennifer volunteered to make her niece Emma's birthday cake, and then asked me to help her! She loves Cinderella and although I don't have a blonde doll topper... I think the brunette worked out just fine. :)

Colleen's birthday & cake

We hurried home from Provo and pulled into Julie and Colleen's just as they were getting home from their birthday dinner for Colleen. We had cake and icecream and visited for awhile before heading home to CRASH!

Cake for Brynlee

This is for my dear friend Michelle's granddaughters 1st birthday! It's 4 chocolate 6' rounds with chocolate butter cream and fondant decorations... it's a giant candle if you can't tell. :) Only have to say that because while I was making it this morning Mya said it was a firework!

Amanda's Cake (Tiffany's Niece)

At first I thought the "fishing" thing was silly, but I really like how it turned out.
It really wasn't THIS yellow. A prettier pale yellow... I had the vivid color setting on, on my camera. Good to know it works! :)

Flag Cake 2010

I make a flag cake every year for the 4th. (or Flag day, memorial day, labor day, presidents day... you know... whenever we can get away with it cuz it's SO yummy!) I used to take it over to the Sevy's for Bret's big birthday bash, but since he turned 50 (a few years ago) they haven't done that. :( But when we got back from the lake we had a big meal with all their family and celebrated Bret's birthday (I think it was probably the 3rd time over the weekend) Colleen loved Channings wedding cake flavor so much she asked if I could make the flag cake like that... I figured I could, and it was extra yummy with all the fresh berries. I usually do a yellow cake with a raspberry jam filling and stabilized whip cream.

Channing's Cake

This is what she said she wanted: This is what she got!

The bottom layer was Chocolate with a milk chocolate filling, and the top two layers were white with what I'm calling the "ice cream" filling. It's really good, made with cream cheese and sweetened condensed milk, almond extract, and lots of sugar!
And this is what was left!

A cake for Bessie

I made this cake for Bessie Sorenson's funeral today. I wanted to be a little creative yesterday and figured that chocolate cake would make a good dessert for the family.

Meghan's Cake

I just got back from delivering Meghan's cake. She brought me the "inspiration" picture but wanted real flowers and a red ribbon. So this is what I came up with. I think they liked it. :)

It's a SURPRISE!

I can't say who this cake is for... because it's for a SURPRISE poker party for his 30th birthday! How fun, huh? This is actually the 3rd cake I've made for this family. THANKS for being my 3-peat customer! You know who you are! ;)

Ericka & Bret's Cake

This is the cake I made today (well, ALL week for today) for my friend Andrea's little sister. Turned out pretty nice, eh? BIG kuddos goes out to Daniel who rolled most of the fondant for me after my arms hurt so bad from rolling out that huge 18'er! Whew! Not wanting to do that for awhile... at least not til next month for Sierra & Landon! ;)
