Cover Alert & Extract: Unforgiven (Fallen #5) by Lauren Kate.

OK, maybe I've been living under a rock, but I'm pretty sure I didn't know about this? I keep asking myself if I maybe knew at one point that Cam - my favourite guy from Lauren Kate's Fallen series - was getting his very own book, and I somehow (inexplicably) forgot about it?  These things happen.

If you haven't met Cam before, you're missing out.  Chuck Bass meets Cole St. Clair from Maggie Stiefvater's Shiver series, is, I think, a pretty good description of bad boy, Cam. Yes, Cam is a bad boy. But there's so much more to him than meets the eye...

Unforgiven, Book Five in the Fallen series, releases in November, and is a reminder to me and everyone else who hasn't already done so, to finish the Fallen series.  I rated Passion (Fallen #3) a 4.5 (high praise indeed!) but then never read the fourth book. I'm the worst at never finishing what I start as far as YA series books are concerned. I blame Breaking Dawn.

Thanks to Penguin Random House who are kind enough to inform me of book releases I've somehow allowed to pass me by, I have some cool things to share with you including an extract of Unforgiven and some swanky new Fallen series covers. Enjoy!

Oh, and let me know what you think of the cover of Unforgiven. Is Cam your favourite too?

The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E. Smith || Release date: April 2014

Lucy and Owen meet somewhere between the tenth and eleventh floors of a New York City apartment building, on an elevator rendered useless by a citywide blackout. After they're rescued, they spend a single night together, wandering the darkened streets and marveling at the rare appearance of stars above Manhattan. But once the power is restored, so is reality. Lucy soon moves to Edinburgh with her parents, while Owen heads out west with his father.

Lucy and Owen's relationship plays out across the globe as they stay in touch through postcards, occasional e-mails, and -- finally -- a reunion in the city where they first met.

A carefully charted map of a long-distance relationship, Jennifer E. Smith's new novel shows that the center of the world isn't necessarily a place. It can be a person, too.

When a menacing stalker, the Reaper, becomes involved, the game takes a darker turn.

Pottesman called Spradbery "a brilliant storyteller whose manuscript gripped, thrilled and teased me until the last page."

The book will be published in September 2014, to be followed by a further standalone novel in 2015.

Better off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg || Release date: February 2014

WHEN HARRY MET SALLY . . . for teens, from romantic comedy star Elizabeth Eulberg.

For Macallan and Levi, it was friends at first sight. Everyone says guys and girls can't be just friends, but these two are. They hang out after school, share tons of inside jokes, their families are super close, and Levi even starts dating one of Macallan's friends. They are platonic and happy that way.

Eventually they realize they're best friends -- which wouldn't be so bad if they didn't keep getting in each other's way. Guys won't ask Macallan out because they think she's with Levi, and Levi spends too much time joking around with Macallan, and maybe not enough time with his date. They can't help but wonder . . . are they more than friends or are they better off without making it even more complicated?

From romantic comedy superstar Elizabeth Eulberg comes a fresh, fun examination of a question for the ages: Can guys and girls ever really be just friends? Or are they always one fight away from not speaking again -- and one kiss away from true love?

 From Book to Screen....

Leads Cast in Movie Adaptation of Lauren Kate's Fallen

Presenting Addison Timlin as Lucinda Price and Jeremy Irvine as Daniel Grigori.

What do you think of the Fallen cast so far? I haven't seen either actor in anything before, but I guess both of them look the part, at least. (Luke Mitchell was my dream pick for Daniel - that's how I pictured him while reading Fallen. I think I also pictured him as Hayden Christensen at one point).

You might like to take a look at Lauren Kate's dream movie cast for Fallen which she wrote as a guest post for the blog a while back. Check it out here.  I think Lauren got it so right when she chose Ed Westwick as Cam - I would love to see that happen!

Paperback, 464 pages.
Rating: 4 out of 5.

Hell on earth.

That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel.

It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts—immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students.

At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding something—something dangerous.

The second novel in the addictive FALLEN series . . . where love never dies.

* Please Note: There are slight spoilers for Fallen in this review!

A true page-turner where danger lurks around every corner, Torment, the second book in Lauren’s Kate’s Fallen series, is an action packed slice of fun, full of mystery, secrets and lies, and those all important hot guys! It took a while for Fallen to win me over, but with this book I had no such problems. I enjoyed Torment right from the start through to the very last page.

While Fallen was slow to start, Torment gets right to the action from the off. Luce is in hiding, pursued by an array of unknown enemies while Daniel and Cam, enemies at the end of Fallen, must now work together as an eighteen day truce between Angels and Demons is formed. Fallen saw the emergence of a hidden enemy and now, no longer safe at Sword and Cross, Luce instead finds herself in sunny California, at Shoreline, a boarding school with a difference. While the Southern setting of Sword on Cross was beautifully described, I found the school itself to be depressing, drab and dreary, and so I really loved the change in location. After the constant doom and gloom of Sword and Cross, I was ready for Luce to have some fun at Shoreline.

And she does have fun! I had a difficult time with Luce in the first book, but here she is an all together more likeable character. While she still pines for Daniel, she makes a real effort at Shoreline, attending beach parties, making new friends, and delving into her past lives by mysterious means. She also uncovers some special abilities of her own which makes me think there could be a while lot more to Luce than meets the eye! I was left with a whole lot of questions at the end of Fallen, and while the answers to a lot of my questions are still outstanding, as Daniel refuses to divulge pretty much any information, I appreciated that Luce was willing to question Daniel here and not just take everything he told her at face value.

Once again I appreciated the depth of characterization in this book. The introduction of a new school sees a whole new set of characters and maybe even a new love interest for Luce. If you thought that Daniel and Cam were going to fight it out over Luce, then you’d be wrong, because there’s a new guy on the scene, and while he’s not my type, I can see why Luce might just be a little tempted, because he’s a whole lot easier to figure out than Daniel.

Oh, Daniel. I had issues with Daniel in Fallen, it’s true, and now I feel as though maybe I was a little harsh on him. He can be over-bearing, over-protective and even bossy at times, but there were a couple of scenes in this book where I was simply smitten with the guy. Daniel is often absent in Torment, but when he does appear, his presence is commanding, while the scenes between him and Luce, when they are not arguing, are intensely romantic and all round swoonworthy. I can’t help it. I am a hopeless soppy romantic! I can’t forget my two favourite characters Cam and Arianne either. While they don’t play a huge role in this book, when they do appear, they are total scene stealers. Then there’s Shelby, Luce’s new roommate who is a whole lot of trouble, and has a whole lot of attitude!

Exciting throughout, Torment ends on a major cliffhanger that left me wanting more! A lot of my favourite books deal with themes of past lives and reincarnation, and it looks as though we might finally get to see Luce and Daniel’s connection through the ages and get some answers to those still unanswered questions, in Passion, the third book in the series which is out later this month. Can’t wait!

Book Review: Fallen by Lauren Kate.

Product details:
Publisher: Random House Children's Books
Release date: December 8th 2009.
Paperback, 452 pages.
Rating: 3½ out of 5
Ages: YA

Source: Received from publisher for review.

There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce—and goes out of his way to make that very clear—she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

Dark, brooding and intense, just like it’s dreamy leading male, Fallen, the first book in Lauren Kate’s popular series is a slow burner of a book brimming with hidden dangers, forbidden romance and sexy guys with secrets. I’m not sure why I put off reading this one for so long, as I’ve always been drawn to the premise of the series and I have to mention those covers. Simply stunning! Now, with the arrival of Passion, the third book in a proposed series quartet, I decided it was time to play catch up!

Fallen takes place at Sword and Cross, a reform school for troubled teens which is about the dreariest place you could imagine. We are introduced to Luce, a girl who is tormented by mysterious shadows and haunted by an unexplained death, which has left her feeling guilty, alone and confused. She just wants to get by at Sword and Cross without drawing attention to herself and without causing any more trouble, but she soon finds out that is not going to happen. Enter Daniel Grigori. As soon as Luce spies Daniel she is instantly drawn to him, not just because of his stunning good looks, I might add, but because she feels a sense of déjà vu when she is near him. Luce feels as thought she has known Daniel for a long time, for lifetimes, but Daniel doesn’t seem to feel the same. For most of the book, Daniel is rude to Luce, and it seems the more she is drawn to him, the more he pushes her away.

Hmmm….I wasn’t sure about Daniel, you know. Right from the prologue we know of the connection between him and Luce, and we know that there has to be a good reason for his behaviour, but still, this information wasn’t enough to endear him to me right away. Now, Cam, that’s a different story altogether. I am a fan of love triangles that are not at all clear cut, and with the introduction of Cam to this story, things got a whole lot more interesting. I’m guessing we’re meant to root for Luce and Daniel, but still, I couldn’t help but develop a soft spot for bad boy Cam. Handsome and charming, with a sexy dangerous edge and a major thing for Luce, Cam seems to be the obvious choice for her. He’s a complex dude, and I’m just a little intrigued by him!

Luce herself is not a character I loved, I have to say, but I understand that she has a lot of issues in this book, and I’m hoping she will learn to stand on her own two feet a little more as the series progresses. In this one, she was just a little too needy, and a little too obsessed with Daniel for my liking. While I wasn’t bowled over by the character of Luce, I otherwise loved the depth of characterization in this book. I think some readers may struggle with the slow nature of the book, but for me, the slow pace worked here for the most part as I felt like I got to know the characters so well, especially Arriane, who I thought was a very fun character, and Penn, who is a good friend to Luce throughout the book.

Romantic and dangerous in equal measures, Fallen has gothic undertones, lots of mystery and a superb ending filled with plot twists which unravel to reveal hidden dangers and raise even more questions for Luce as she struggles to uncover the mystery of her connection to Daniel and the secrets of the shadows that surround her. This is a promising series starter, and I’m excited to read Torment (Fallen #2) to find out what happens next!
