Book Review - Second Strike
About the Book
Author Ron P. Whittington’s first novel Second Strike, a fictional account of a terrorist attack planned in the U.S. just after 9/11, has been re-released in a soft-back, media market version.
In Second Strike, the life of New York businessman Parker Glynn is dramatically affected by the attack on the Twin Towers when he loses his wife and child and discovers he may have been an unknowingly ally to Al-Queda. Glynn’s flight from his past takes him to northeast Florida, where he accidentally uncovers another terror strike is under way in the wake of 9/11.
“The 9/11 tragedy affected the lives of many of us, yet there was little most of us could personally do to fight back at the time,” Whittington said. “The story line, that a man directly impacted by the attack has the opportunity to get revenge for the horror inflicted on him, is finding a receptive audience. It’s a classic tale of revenge and redemption.”
Second Strike was independently printed by Bookmasters, Inc. of Ashland, Ohio and is for sale at www.secondstrikethenovel.com and www.amazon.com – along with independent book stores in Florida including:
About the Author
Over the last 20 years, Whittington has worked as a ghostwriter on two national best-selling books and his freelance writing has appeared in Texas Business, Texas Monthly, Water's Edge, Jacksonville Magazine, Beson Publications, and The Florida Times-Union.
A native of Atlanta, Whittington started his career as a journalist with CNN Radio and the Dallas-Fort Worth Business Journal before going into the public relations profession. He has served as the media spokesman for the Dallas Chamber of Commerce, Dallas Area Rapid Transit, the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority and Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games, JEA (Jacksonville Florida’s municipal utility) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in addition to work as an independent P.R. consultant. He is currently a senior account executive for the southeast U.S. regional office of London-based Mulberry Marketing Communications.
My Take on the Book
I truly enjoyed this page turner of a book. I have read many suspense novels in the pas, from James Patterson to Robert Patterson and more, and this book follows suit and the author has done an amazing job at capturing the interest and attention of the reader with a fast pace, engaging and entertaining read!
This book is one that will truly make you think about what could happen if terrorists get their way. The book also has great characters and a plot that will keep you engaged and asking for more from the beginning to the end of the book!

Book Review - Creed's Honor
About the Book
As the daughter of a town marshal, Linda has come home to the western lifestyle that gave birth to one of today’s most successful authors. With more than 80 novels to her credit, the self-confessed barn goddess left Washington years ago and pursued her wanderlust, living in Arizona and London and traveling the world. But now the “First Lady of the West” is glad to be back home, writing contemporary and historical novels that have earned her awards and placements on all the national bestsellers lists.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Linda's latest series, the McKettricks of Texas, Tate, Garrett and Austin (HQN Books February, June and July 2010 releases) has earned reader and reviewer acclaim and berths as high as #2 on the New York Times Best-Selling Books list. Linda set this trilogy about three brothers on a ranch outside Austin that rivals the Ponderosa in the TV series, “Bonanza,” which earned her youthful fascination. JoyfullyReviwed.com, a popular romance fan site, said of the McKettricks of Texas: “Her subtle blend of sensuality, chivalry, and the clear roles of her men and women create charming romances. The McKettrick brothers are sexy gentleman with Stetsons. Whether they’re from 1810 or 2010, Linda Lael Miller’s cowboys are timeless.”
Linda is currently at work on a new western trilogy, which will be published in 2011.
Once a struggling young mother, Linda is devoted to helping women who long to improve their lot in life through education. Each year she sponsors a round of competition for her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women. The stipends, which she funds from her writing and speaking earnings, go to women 25 years and older who have a difficult time qualifying for traditional scholarships. Linda’s grants, which will total $15,000 in 2010, may be used for childcare, transportation, or any other expense that stands between a woman’s dreams and fulfillment. More than 1700 women entered her 2009 competition.
Linda is excited about her association with The Humane Society of the United States, for whom she has become an advocate for the group’s Pets for Life program. Once someone finds a furry friend to bring into their home, Linda and The HSUS want to help them learn how to keep the critter for life.
Linda has come a long way since leaving Washington to experience the world. "But growing up in that time and place, in a family grounded in Western values, served me well," she allows. "And I'm happy to be back home."

The author has done a good job at capturing the west in this and her other novels and her characters just add to the great settings that she already shares with her readers!

My Take on the Book
This book, though definitely more of a book geared toward women is still full of strong characters and the author has done a good job at developed relationships that draw you into the story.Though this story was not one that I would typically read, nor would many men, I did read this and share it with my wife who ended up reading this and she said that it was a fun steamy read! I wouldn't know if it was steamy per se, but I will take her thought on it.
The author has done a good job at capturing the west in this and her other novels and her characters just add to the great settings that she already shares with her readers!

Award Winning journalist and true crime writer Robin Yocum knows about mysteries. He spent eleven years following every detail of reported investigations, interviewing countless sources and cross-referencing data in order to uncover the truth, and revealing the often elusive culprits behind local crimes. He knows that sometimes the obvious criminal is not the real criminal, that the most important clues are always right where you forgot to look, and that some people have so much to lose that they will do absolutely anything to cover their tracks.
In Favorite Sons, Yocum puts his knowledge of the way criminals think, the stories crime scenes tell, and the way peoples lives get caught in the balance to practice. The result is a skillfully crafted, emotionally harnessing, and authoritatively captivating thriller that blurs the lines between heroes and villains, and leaves the police, the protagonists, and even the readers conflicted over who they should be rooting for.
The book revolves around Hutch Van Buren, who was a carefree fifteen-year-old boy searching for arrowheads in a small industrial town in Ohio with his three closest friends when an altercation between his comrades and Petey Sanchez, a troubled seventeen-year-old, leads to Petey’s accidental death. Together, Hutch and his friends become ensnared in a web of secrets. One-Eyed Jack, a local ne’er do-well and child molester, goes to prison for the crime while the boys keep their pact of silence, each shouldering the burden of truth in his own way.
Thirty-three years later, Van Buren is the prosecuting attorney in Summit County, Ohio, and a candidate for state attorney general when he learns that he and his boyhood friends weren’t the only ones keeping a secret about Petey’s death. One-Eyed Jack has been released from prison and, facing new charges as a sex offender, attempts to blackmail Van Buren in exchange for his continued silence.
Van Buren must decide between his political career and the duty of the office he has sworn to uphold. With the clock ticking, Van Buren has a week to seek out his boyhood friends and search his soul while he sorts out three decades of deceit he helped create.
Favorite Sons is a riveting novel in which friendships are pitted against truth with dead-on dialog and unforgettable characters. Yocum’s debut fiction novel is a fresh, fast-paced story that explores a sharply etched world of intrigue, friendship, politics, and, ultimately, the weight of truth.
About the Author:
The author of two nonfiction books, Robin Yocum was with the Columbus Dispatch for eleven years as a crime and investigative reporter, and is the recipient of thirty writing awards including those from the Associated Press and the Press Club of Ohio. Favorite Sons is his first novel. A native of Brilliant, Ohio, he is the founder of Yocum Communications, a PR firm in Westerville, Ohio.
My Take on the Book
This book takes you on a whirwind, complex journey strewn with deep relationship issues, greed, corruption and much more. As a reader you are drawn into the story and transfixed by the characters. A thrilling book that will keep your attention from the first to last page!
This book made me think about decisions that I had made.
The story drew me in and I was amazed at the how thorough the book was. The author has developed an amazing story that cannot be rivaled in most stories! As a person who spent much time in Ohio, I was intrigued at the setting that the author provides the reader. I have both visited and spent time in the area that the author writes about and the way that the author portrays the people and the areas is dead on. I was amazed at how accurate and detailed the author was, he nails it completely! This book made me think about decisions that I had made.

Book Review - The Play Soldier
About the Book
Chet Green explains that even though he penned a novel, most of the events he describes really happened and that most of the descriptive details are accurate.
His new book, THE PLAY SOLDIER, is a gritty novel with a punch. It describes what life is like for a counterfeit hero who poses as a decorated ex-Marine and, to redeem himself, tries to join the French Foreign Legion but is rejected and then chases fulfillment as a conflict photographer.
The story explores what it is like to want to put meaning in your life as a soldier, even though you can’t be one. It describes the plight of a troubled man who dresses for the part, like an actor, to create the image he wants to portray and convey in the play of life–a problem of our times. Here is a story that talks directly to the negative side effects of too many stories of glory, including sanitized reporting, action video games and war movies. Here is what can happen when everyday life does not provide sufficient challenges to test a man.
With a flair for capturing the details of personal conflict in exotic places, Green also addresses the effects of racial, cultural and class division and depicts the ethos steeling the Foreign Legion’s way of life. He establishes and defines what drives men to seek encounters that are filled with great risk and danger, why they want to see action.
In college Green took a course in cultural anthropology that left him intrigued, then a magazine feature about Ethiopia’s Afar nomads hooked him. In 1974 he went to see these people and experience their society for himself. He returned to the African Horn four times over the next five years, visiting other warrior cultures, photographing and chronicling as he went, often trekking on foot or by camel. Various military and outlaw elements were encountered, and his experiences with them inspired much in the novel.
His crisp and engaging writing style and depiction of disparate cultures, as well as his use of vernacular dialogue, add color and quality to a vivid and memorable literary contribution that will galvanize those interested in contemporary reporting from the front lines of the world’s conflict zones. The Play Soldier is a realistic novel about the attraction of the combat experience and the phenomenon of fabricated valor.
About the Author
Chet Green was a U.S. Navy Journalist in SE Asia during the Vietnam War. Afterward, as an English/ journalism major at the University of Michigan, a course in cultural anthropology left him intrigued. Then a magazine feature about Ethiopia’s Afar nomads hooked him. And so, after graduating in 1973, he went to see these people but returned to the African Horn through the rest of the decade to visit other desert cultures, photographing and chronicling as he went, often trekking on foot or by camel. Various military and outlaw elements were encountered, and his experiences with them inspired much in the novel. This is his first book.
Following Africa, he became on-camera/off-camera commercial talent between Detroit and Washington, DC. A stint in TV news eventually led to a spot as a reporter in a Clint Eastwood movie.Chet Green was a U.S. Navy Journalist in SE Asia during the Vietnam War. My Take on the Book
This book is definitely complex. You look at a character that poses as a soldier and from the outside you see what you think a soldier should look like, but there is always something missing. What is it? You have to determine this for yourself, as any reader would. This book takes an intimate look at the question of what is reality and what is not.
You can tell that the author has drawn from his own personal experience to make this book even more realistic. I can tell that a person without experiences like his could not have captured the soldier's mindset like he has.
The book was an easy read, energetic and engaging as well as well written. The book is full of many social themes that are pervasive in today's society. If you are looking for a book that will make you think as well as be entertained, you will not be disappointed!
