Sanding Creative Paperclay

A common question people ask is how to smooth your sculptures? Well, it is actually quite easy. You can use sandpaper that you would use for drywall or you can also use nail files, yes the type you use when you are doing a mani-pedi.

In the video below I talk about sanding your sculptures and go over many of the tools you can use.

For those of you who don't know, Clay Talk airs on the first Thursday of every month at 8pm EST/5PM PST on Facebook Live. Here is the link to the Creative Paperclay Modeling Material Page where the show is hosted. I usually host the show but sometimes another fabulous design team member fills in for me. Don't forget to mark your calendars!

Clay Talk: Fixing cracks in Creative Paperclay Sculptures

Hello,
Last week I shared with you on Facebook Live, how to fix those dreaded cracks in your sculptures. For those of you who missed it or if you want to go over it again, I have included the video below.

To summarize, cracks can be caused by:

  1. Using too much water while sculpting/smoothing your clay.
  2. Applying the clay too thick- it is best to work in thinner layers (no more than 1/4") and add more layers when it is dry. NB when adding fresh clay to dry clay, always paint the area with diluted white glue (or water if you have no glue) before adding the new clay.
  3. Drying the sculpture too fast.
  4. If air pockets formed when adding the clay -press clay the armature to avoid this.
So how can we fix the cracks?
  1. For small cracks, use a slurry to fill the crack. The slurry is made by adding water to bits of clay and blending until it is the consistency of pudding.
  2. For larger cracks, using fresh clay roll out a worm shape. Wet the crack with diluted white glue and press the clay into the crack. Smooth out with your fingers or sculpting tool and allow to dry.
Here is the video from Clay Talk where I demonstrate how to fix the cracks and answer questions.

Thank you all for stopping by and supporting Clay Talk. Please be sure to join me on February 6, 2020, at 8pm EST/5pm PST. I will be discussing sanding and smoothing Creative Paperclay.

Storing your Creative Paperclay® and Delight Clay™

Hello everyone, have you seen my new show called Clay Talk? It airs on Facebook Live the first Thursday of every month on the Creative Paperclay page. Just in case you missed it, I am going to post the videos here on the blog each month along with a summary of what we discussed.

For our first show we discussed different ways of storing your clay once you have opened it. As you know, air dry clays will begin to dry when they come in contact with air so we need to take care both when working with them and storing them. Below are a list of methods for storing your clay, each of which are discussed in the video below.

  1. Ziploc bags or storage bags with a seal at the top
  2. air tight food storage containers
  3. Glad Press & Seal
  4. heat sealer

I hope this was helpful. If you have any questions just ask away in the comment section below. You can also learn a lot on the Creative Paperclay Q & A Group on Facebook. Don't forget to to join the live show the 1st Thursday of every month.

Thanks for stopping by!
