This one is from my sister Courtney. The first time I had buttermilk syrup (and every time they visit I beg her to make it again) was with Misty. Oh my goodness so yummy. Hers is slightly different and I tend to screw it up. Courts I make and then always forget how long its supposed to cook. Still really don't know, just fake it. If I ever make super healthy pancakes with wheat germ and whole wheat ingredients, I'll make this syrup so that everyone can still enjoy them. So use the rest of the buttermilk you just bought for wheat pancakes right? Its all about balance right?
Buttermilk syrup Recipe from Courtney Haynie
1 cup Butter
1 1/2 cup Buttermilk
1 tsp baking soda
3 TB corn syrup
Cook over Medium heat and bring to a boil for a couple minutes. Take off heat and add 1 t vanilla. Enjoy! Use a BIG POT, much bigger than you think. Can be reheated in microwave for later use, not quite the same, but dang close.
Ok, next recipes for the good of your soul and your day is going crappy.
(unless you are on a diet and in that case, DO NOT MAKE THIS!)
Paula Deen's Texas Sheet Cake
I like this cake cause its quick, feeds a lot, and always have the ingredients on hand. Oh that and I love it and especially a cooked frosting.
2 sticks of butter
1 cup water
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/2 cup sour cream
icing ingredients
1 stick of butter
6 tablespoons milk
4 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 lb powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup pecans (optional)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. For the cake, combine the butter, water, and cocoa in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat. in a mixing bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, baking soda and salt. add butter mixture all at once, and stir to blend. whisk the eggs and sour cream together; add to the batter and mix well. pour batter into jelly roll plan and bake for 20 minutes. just before the cake is done. make icing. combine butter, milk and cocoa in saucepan and bring to boil. add the powdered sugar and vanilla (I always forget the vanilla) and mix well (at this point I have to beat it with electric beater to get out clumps). Frost the cake while it is still warm and top with nuts if you want. I also like using the same pot that I boil the cake as with the frosting, less mess. (I don't even rinse it out)
Hide and eat in your closet....or don't do that :)
p.s. One day I would love to go eat at Paula Deen's restaurant in Savannah, GA....

Hey! Thanks for the recipes! What about orange roll recipe??:))
that one is from my kitchen cafe, or mel's kitchen (same thing)...its the lion house roll recipe turned into orange rolls.
thanks for posting the sheet cake recipe. I"ve tried PW, but I bet the sour cream makes it better--and I love the post.
Thanks again for the sheet cake recipe. I would love to eat at Paula Dean's restaurant too!
Mmm mmm mmm! I better get on making those while I have an excuse to eat "make my butt bigger" foods! Thanx for sharing.
I make buttermilk syrup too. It is so dangerous but oh so good. Love me some Texas sheet cake. I will have to try Paula Deens. I just used the one from Allrecipes. I wonder what the difference is...
so you gotta try the oatmeal pancake mix from Mels Kitchen Cafe
http://www.melskitchencafe.com/2009/09/oatmeal-pancake-mix.html
so good and makes you feel slightly less guilty about eating pancakes and I love that you can make the mix and store in the fridge until you need to whip out a cup or two.
Also I see your bookshelf, you'll have to let me know about your May book and the ones by Shannon Hale, are they good reads? I'm turning off the TV and trying to read more, are you loving your ipad for reading on?
When I was pregnant, I think I looked through the entire history of your blog to see if you had posted this recipe :) I love it!
