this little guy.......
scared the crap out of his mother.
tuesday night we went to dive class. i dropped the kids off at the pool and headed upstairs to go run. i got to the treadmill, untangled my headphones and then looked down to find the kids. we usually find each other, wave and then i can watch them while i run. i looked down and found ali, but no charlie. hmmm, that's weird. then i looked over and saw about 5 life guards surrounding a child.......MY child!!!!!!! I took off running down to the pool while I hear them paging me overhead.
here's what happened. charlie was on the third bleacher up and thought it would be a good idea to dive onto the mats. he just figured he would land on his feet at the last second. well, apparently he is not a cat. he landed on his head. they had him taped down on the stretch board. he wasn't breathing very well. he got the wind knocked out of him and he was scared to death. they gave him oxygen and told me the paramedics were on their way. it is the ymca protocol to call the ambulance when there is a possible head injury. so in comes about 8 guys and a stretcher. poor ali saw that and just started bawling. i said she thought charlie wasn't going to make it or be really really hurt. the EMTs sent the fireman away but they stayed to monitor him. about 20 minutes after all this happened they untied him and let him stand up. he literally just popped right up. they were trying to slow him down. he said he felt fine and that it didn't hurt anymore. i was signing the paperwork saying that we don't want to be taken to the ER when i look over and charlie starts to walk away. "where ya goin buddy?" his response, "to dive class." yeah right dude. he was clearly fine if he was ready to dive again. "sorry, but no. let's go home."
we took it easy the rest of the night and he said it never started hurting again. once we got in the car and i knew he was ok i looked at his cute little puppy dog eyes and said, "what on earth were you doing???? don't ever do anything like that again." i tired to explain how lucky he is that nothing bad happened like ya know being paralyzed. i still don't think he is really grasping the severity of all of it. i am just glad he is ok. maybe we could slow down on the emergencies in this family for a little while.
