A #SundaySupper Preview Where We Use Veggies as a Main Dish

With the most well known foodie holiday occurring later this week, it would have been easy for the team at #SundaySupper Movement to contribute to the thousands of posts dedicated to the topic. It decided to go in a different direction, with all dishes published this upcoming weekend centering around produce. The theme this week is Veggies as a Main Dish.

For those of you in the United States, I wish you a wonderful holiday filled with family, friends, football and food. Until then, I offer this preview of dishes that will be published this Sunday.

Expectations from the 2015 International Food Bloggers Conference #IFBC

Left to right: Bobbi of Bobbi's Kozy Kitchen, Me, Kim of Cravings of a Lunatic and Kiss My Smoke, Joan of Chocolate Chocolate and More

The picture above was taken last September on the Friday afternoon of the 2014 International Food Bloggers Conference by Alice of A Mama, Baby & Shar-pei in the Kitchen. I had just moved to the Pacific Northwest a couple of weeks earlier and was just getting settled into my new residence which is the reason I wasn't able to attend, but Mrs. Stuntman and I compromised and I was able to meet some out-of-town friends for lunch that flew in for the event.

This year, it's a different story.

I will be attending the 2015 International Food Bloggers Conference organized by Foodista and Zephyr Adventures so I thought I'd review some of my expectations for the weekend, using my experience at #FWCon as a guide.

1. Probably the biggest difference from the standpoint of travel is that I'll be able to sleep in my own bed while I attend. No airports with flights or hotel rooms for me. In fact, I think it would be safe to say that a few of my neighbors commute into the area of the hotel every weekday.

2. I've asked around and some of the feedback I got was that the host city is part of the attraction which is something I hadn't considered. It's almost an embarrassment of riches considering I moved from one of the best areas in the country for food to another best area for food so I have almost taken it for granted. Unfortunately, I have a habit of taking for granted things that are near to me. For example, I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 30 years but I don't remember visiting Alcatraz. (Maybe as a kid? I can't remember.) I guess there is a certain irony because, it's not like there's no tourist attractions in Orlando.

3. I'm looking forward to the keynote address by New York Times food writer Kim Severson, but it will also be interesting to compare the content of the sessions here with #FWCon. Will the same information be shared?

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, what I look forward to the most is the networking opportunities the conference provides. Looking at the list of attendees of this year's conference, I'll know only a handful of people going in but I do have a background in sales and plan to employ those skills to expand my blogging network.

Preview of a Back to School #SundaySupper

Candid Taken at the Local Supermarket

It seems like every year retailers start their seasonal sales earlier and earlier. Personally, I've had a pretty busy July and haven't paid much attention to it this summer but I remember thinking, "Wait! My daughter just started her summer break" after seeing 'Back to School' sales immediately following Independence Day last year. I shouldn't be surprised. I joke that you could walk into Macys every year at this time and greet Santa. It's an exaggeration but not by much.

Since many of us will be converting our daily and weekly schedules to accommodate the upcoming school year soon the team at #SundaySupper Movement has decided to use Back to School for this upcoming Sunday's theme where we're sharing packed lunches, after school snacks, quick and easy meals for school nights plus desserts. I am delighted to be hosting this event with Caroline of Caroline's Cooking.

Look for these dishes on the morning of this Sunday, August 16th:

Getting Started On School Days
Ideas for the Lunchbox
After School Snacks and Beverages
School Night Suppers
Sweets to End the Day

Preview of a Farmstand #SundaySupper

One of the simpler pleasures in life, for me at least, is stopping by a roadside farmstand to look through produce for sale. Unfortunately, these establishments are disappearing in this day and age so it's even more important to patronize them whenever possible. Fortunately, the team at #SundaySupper Movement has used these treasured finds as it's theme, Farmstand Food and this week, I'm co-hosting with Colleen of FoodieTots.

I offer this preview of dishes that are scheduled to be published t his upcoming Sunday:

Appetizers, Sides and Salads
Entreés
Desserts

Preview of a Red White and Blue #SundaySupper

Flag at the Main Post Office. Kirkland, WA

I'm a little surprised that I'm typing this but this upcoming weekend is the unofficial start of summer in the Untied States and it begins with an extra day off for many on Monday, the 25th, called Memorial Day. Is it just me or has the year flew by for you too? It seems like just last week when I was wishing Mrs. Stuntman a happy new year. Regardless, the weekend has evolved to be associated with backyard barbecues and family vacations, so I thought I'd remind you of the history behind the day.

Since it's an American holiday, the colors of it's flag (i.e. red, white and blue) are very popular and even permeate into the food that's served that weekend, so the team at #SundaySupper has decided to use the theme Red, White and Blue this week and dozens of bloggers have decided to prepare dishes that are red, white and/or blue. I look forward to this Sunday and offer this preview of dishes to be published:

Food Using One Color
Red Food
White Food
Blue Food
Food Using Two Colors
Red and White Food

Preview of a Spring Fling #SundaySupper

Flowers Have Started to Bloom in Western Washington. It Must be Spring!

The spring equinox will occur this upcoming Friday. When I was a California resident, it would not be a remarkable event but I have gained a new appreciation for the four seasons since I am coming out of my first winter here in the Pacific Northwest. (However, parents of my daughter's classmates tell me that the last three months have been unusually warm and I haven't been properly baptized yet.)

Spring to me means that things are defrosting from the cold winter, a good, deep clean is on order for the abode and I need to file my tax return soon. From ramps to morels, spring also means that a number of fruits and vegetables will come into season, so the team at #SundaySupper Movement has decided to mark the occasion by featuring seasonal dishes in it's Spring Fling event which will occur this upcoming Sunday, March 22nd. I have the pleasure of co-hosting it with Valerie of Lifestyle Food Artistry. One of our responsibilities is to introduce the bloggers and their respective dishes we anticipate for the event, so I offer the following preview and look forward to seeing you Sunday.

Appetizers

I don't have to tell you that schedules become very full this time of year. One event many of us attend are holiday parties so this week's #SundaySupper theme of Libational Recipes is very timely. It will be hosted by myself and Alice of A Mama, Baby & Shar-pei in the Kitchen.

Preview of an Unprocessed #SundaySupper

We'll Have None of This on Sunday

Processed foods have gotten an unjust bad reputation.

When I first saw the theme for this week's #SundaySupper event, I thought I knew what it was referring to just by its name, Unprocessed Foods. Then I did some research and discovered the definition more complex.

It turns out that nearly all food you purchase at the supermarket is processed on some level. For example, the milk you purchase in the dairy section is pasteurized to kill off any harmful bacteria, beef cut into individual steaks or even an apple sliced into wedges are all processed foods. For more information, I encourage you to read this article by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. For the purposes of this event, let's use the kitchen test provided by Andrew Wilder of Eating Rules. He also has issued a challenge you should consider to go an entire month without eating any processed foods.

I eagerly await foods prepared by these talented bloggers scheduled to be published on the morning of Sunday, October 5th:

Alluring Appetizers and Stunning Sides
Enticing Entreés
Decadent Desserts

Preview of the 2014 Food & Wine Conference #FWCon

No dish to feature today, folks. Wait! Before you go, I have some exciting information for you.

As you're probably well aware, I'm a huge supporter of the #SundaySupper Movement and it's mission to bring back Sunday dinners around the family table in every home. The movement has grown from a small group of 8 bloggers organizing a virtual progressive dinner in January of 2012 to an audience of three million weekly. The movement has also expanded to host a Food and Wine Conference where bloggers network with small business owners, winemakers, chefs, public relations professionals, media, authors and brands to gain a better understanding of such topics as search engine optimization, social media marketing, articulate writing, cookbook publishing, public relations collaborations and food photography. This year will be the second annual conference after last year's inaugural event was a success. It will be held at the Rosen Shingle Creek in Orlando, Florida on July 18-20.

Unfortunately, I was unable to go last year but I will be in attendance this year and invite you to join me in Orlando. I am also lucky enough to have been chosen to be a Brand Ambassador for the conference. What that means for you, my readers, is that I'll be tweeting and publishing pictures during and after the conference so please follow me if you don't already. In the interest of full disclosure, I am receiving a discounted ticket for being an Ambassador.

Meeting me in person probably isn't enough incentive to join me but I hope those speaking at the conference will be. Whitney Miller, season 1 winner of Masterchef, Katie Workman, editor-in-chief of Cookstr, Dan Cristo, one of the founders of triberr, plus many others will all address the conference in addition, Chef Giuliano Hazan will be conducting a cooking demonstration, scheduled for Sunday morning.

Speaking of food (after all, this is a food and wine conference), I trust the organizers, who held the conference in the same location last year, figuring they would not have returned if the food was anything less than exceptional. Why would I do so? Check out these pictures.

If finances are an obstacle to your attendance, the conference has ways to help in that regard too:

Dixie Crystals Sugar has sponsored a brownie recipe contest where first, second and third place winners will be chosen. Each will be reimbursed for their conference registration in addition to other prizes. Please click here for more information. Follow Dixie Crystals Sugar on twitter, facebook, pinterest, and instagram.

Idaho Potato Commission wants your best breakfast potato dish to enter into their recipe contest. There will also be three winners chosen to be reimbursed for their conference registration plus other goodies but there will also be a grand prize of an expense paid trip to Idaho September 29 to October 1, 2014 awarded to one of the winners. Click here for details. Follow Idaho Potato Commission on twitter, facebook, pinterest, and instagram.

Rosen Shingle Creek has also decided to sponsor a recipe contest in celebration of their fortieth anniversary. They are asking for an original dish inspired by a menu item from one of their restaurants: A Land Remembered steakhouse, Cala Bella Italian bistro, Mi Casa Tequila Taqueria Mexican restaurant, Banrai Sushi, or Tobias Flats and Watering Hole specializing in unique flatbreads. There will only be two winners chosen but both winners will receive a two-night stay at Rosen Shingle Creek in addition to reimbursement for their conference registration. Click here for details on how to enter. Follow Rosen Hotels on twitter, facebook, pinterest, instagram and Google+.

Davidson's Safest Choice Eggs is looking for a summer no-bake egg dish for their recipe contest. Two winners will receive reimbursement for their conference registration in addition to one year's supply of eggs. Enter the contest here. Also follow Davidson's Safest Choice Eggs on twitter, facebook and pinterest.

If recipe contests aren't appealing, then you can simply register here but be sure to use the promotion code FoodieSM to get a $50 discount.

I hope you'll join me this summer because it promises to be an educational, epicurean and fun experience. Either way, get updates on the Conference by following it on twitter, and pinterest; giving its facebook page a 'Like'; and adding the Conference on Google+.

Unsure of What's Next for #SundaySupper? We Got You Covered

No need to be left out in the cold; We Got You Covered

For those of you reading this in the United States, I hope you're having a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with family, friends and food.

I'm pleasantly surprised this week because I wasn't expecting as many participants as we received due to the holiday. Apparently, they've got me covered which is the theme of this week's #SundaySupper event. There is food covered by some tasty toppings in addition to covering other topics, such as turkey leftovers, budget friendly holiday meals and homemade dishes so chemicals that are in store-bought foods can be avoided.

I'd also like to thank Heather of Hezzi-D's Books and Cooks (her link is below) and her spouse, Frank, for the picture above. Heather posed for the picture and Frank operated the camera.

Preview Post for a Sauce It Up #SundaySupper

Photo courtesy of Carla of Chocolate Moosey

A couple of years ago, I inquired into a few local culinary schools. It ultimately proved to be not financially feasible for me but I did notice some consistencies with each of them: One prerequisite is a safety and sanitation, which makes sense because one would need this information to competently work in a commercial kitchen. I remember being a little surprised at the time with another which is soups, stocks and sauces. As I have prepared more dishes, I have realized how fundamental the concept is. Some of my favorite dishes are seasoned simply with salt and pepper, but it's the accompanying sauce that provides depth of flavor.

With this in mind, the team at #SundaySupper Movement has decided to further explore sauces this upcoming Sunday, the 20th, using the theme Sauce It Up. I'll be hosting again so I'd like to offer this preview of participating bloggers and their corresponding dishes.
