We are currently offering a three day historical and cultural package that will allow you retrace the footsteps of a Queen...quite literally. In May 2011, Queen Elizabeth II toured Cork city in an historic first visit to this country. Highlight of her trip to Cork was a visit to the historic English market. This momentous occasion was captured in a fabulous picture, shown above, that was relayed around the World.
Using the Commodore Hotel as a base why not visit Cork city and the English market. Cork city is less than 25 minutes away by train. The train journey itself is a highlight as the journey follows the course of the River Lee and at all times you are treated to picturesque views of Cork Harbour, the second largest harbour in the World.
This is the second visit of a British Queen to the area. In 1849 Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort visited Cobh itself and, in fact, Cobh was the very first spot that the Queen visited in Ireland. This was due to the port's significance to the British Realm as a base for the Royal Navy and as a embarkation point for Her Majesty's troops. On the very spot that a pavillion was erected for the Royal couple's entertainment the hotel was built some years later. It was to become one of the first purpose built hotels in the country and was originally named the 'Queens Hotel.' With a stay in the Commodore you are quite literally walking in the footsteps of a Queen.
The town itself is steeped in history and we've built into the package various aspects that allow you soak all this in. Included is a visit to the Queenstown Story, an interpretative centre that covers the rich maritime history of the town click here, a guided walk of the Titanic Trail click here, a guided tour of Spike Island click here. For history buffs this is a must. As well as three nights accommodation we've also included an evening meal in one of the localities top restaurants, Tradewinds Restaurants, and an evening meal in our own restaurant, the 'State's Restuarant.'
This package is great value at €233 or stg£205 per person. To book ring Mary at 00-353-21-4811277 or email her at commodorehotel@eircom.net
