Threw a die that shows a 1. And this picture's file name happens to start with the number 1 so I uploaded this picture.

I was just kidding. I deliberately uploaded this picture and the above statement is just to educate those who are still using the word "random" happily in facebook photos.

Greed makes monkey of men

2 comments - Post a comment

Once upon a time in a village, a man appeared and announced to the villagers that he would buy monkeys at $10 each. The villagers, seeing that there were many monkeys around, went into the forest and started catching them. The man very gentlemanly bought thousands of monkeys at $10 each, but as supply started to diminish, the villagers slowed down and eventually stopped their efforts.

The man then announced that he would now buy at $20. This renewed the energy and efforts of the villagers and they started catching monkeys again. Soon the supply diminished even further, and people started going back to their farms.

The offer was then increased to $25 each, but the supply of monkeys became so little that it was a almost a miracle to even spot a monkey, let alone catch one.

The man now announced that he would buy monkeys at $50! However, since he had to go to the city on some business, his assistant would transact on his behalf.

In the absence of the man, the assistant assembled the villagers and told them : "Look at all these monkeys in the big cages that the man has collected. I will sell them to you at $35 each, and when the man returns from the city, you can in turn sell them to him at $50 each. Deal or no deal?"

The excited villagers, smelling a quick-profit killer opportunity, immediately rounded up all their savings and bought all the monkeys. Then they never saw the man nor his assistant again, and there were just monkeys everywhere!

Now you have a better understanding of how "greed" makes monkey of men?

Would-be British plane bombers recorded suicide videos

No Comment - Post a comment

LONDON : Islamic extremists plotting suicide attacks on flights from Britain to North America prepared martyrdom videos to announce their planned deaths, a prosecutor said Friday.

Videos recorded by most of the eight-man gang were found after police swooped on their homes in August 2006, prosecutor Peter Wright said on the second day of their trial at a high-security London court.

Prosecutors say the men were planning to use liquid explosives disguised as drinks to simultaneously blow up at least seven flights from London's Heathrow airport as they headed to New York, Washington, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto and Montreal.

What are the differences between Registered mail and Normal mail?

No Comment - Post a comment

Registered mail:

The sender is required to fill up a form of his/her name and particulars, and the recipient's particulars when he/she is sending out the item.

There will be a printed reciept issued, with a Tracking Number. You can use the Tracking Number to track the status of you item via www.singpost.com.

A postman will send the mail to your house. If you are not at home, a Delivery advice will be slipped under your door. You can then head down to the post office stated on the advice to collect your mail.

You will need to bring along your IC, or any other proof of identification.

Registered mail is about $2 or more expensive than normal mail, depending on the weight of the mail.

Normal mail:

The sender only needs to drop the mail into the mailbox. There will be no proof or reciept issued. You cannot track the item.

If the item is LOST, nobody will be responsible for it.

If the mail is thin enough to be slotted into your mailbox, it will be there.

If it is bulky, the postman will send it to your place. Some postmen are kind, they issue you a collection card, and then you can head down to the post office printed there to collect your mail. Some postmen leave the mail AT YOUR DOOR.

There are even complaints whereby the postman left a parcel on top of the mailbox.

Can't sleep? Put away your cell phone

No Comment - Post a comment

Extracted from Channelnewsasia.

STOCKHOLM : Chatting on a mobile phone before bedtime makes for more restless nights, a Swedish researcher who headed up a study on the subject cautioned on Monday.

"If you feel you have trouble sleeping, you should think about not talking on a mobile phone right before you go to bed," said Bengt Arnetz, a professor of social medicine and stress research at Uppsala University, north of Stockholm.

Arnetz, who spoke to AFP in a telephone interview from the United States, said he and a team of researchers from Sweden's Karolinska Institute and Wayne State University in Michigan had found that mobile phone radiation appeared to cause insomnia, headaches and concentration difficulties.

Over a period of 18 months, the scientists studied 35 men and 36 women between the ages of 18 and 45, intermittently exposing some to 884 MHz wireless signals, the equivalent of the radiation received when talking on a cell phone.

Others meanwhile were placed in the same conditions but received only sham exposure.

"The ones who were exposed reported headaches, it took longer for them to fall asleep and they did not sleep as well through the night," Arnetz said, claiming his was the largest study so far on the subject.

Is this the reason why my Li Ling fails to sleep well during some nights? hmm.....

"w00t" voted Merriam-Webster word of the year

No Comment - Post a comment

SAN FRANCISCO - English-language dictionary Merriam-Webster said Wednesday that an expression popular with people that play online computer games was voted its word of the year for 2007.

The word "w00t," spelled using the number zero in place of the letter "o," placed first in a Top Ten list based on votes by visitors to Merriam-Webster's website.

The word is described as an exclamation "expressing joy, possibly after a triumph or for no reason at all" and is similar to the word "yay."

An example given by the dictionary is "w00t! I won the contest."

The word is also considered an acronym in the online gaming world for "We owned the other team," according to US-based Merriam-Webster.

Merriam-Webster said "w00t" hasn't made it into the dictionary but being chosen as word of the year "just might improve its chances."

The word is part of computer hacker vernacular referred to as "l33t," or "elite," speak used in competitive online computer game forums.

The customised language combines letters and numbers used in their stead, such as a number three for the letter "E" or a number four for the letter "A."

Second-place in the word-of-the-year contest went to "facebook," making an unofficial verb of the name of the popular social networking website.

The meaning given to "facebook" is to post a picture, party news or other information to profile pages at the website.

Also finishing in the top ten of the competition were yet-to-be-sanctioned words "blamestorm" and "sardoodledom," according to Merriam-Webster.

A blamestorm is a verb described as a group discussion of why a deadline was missed or a project botched and whose fault it was.

Sardoodledom is derived from English playwright George B. Shaw's criticism of French peer Victorien Sardou and is used to mean contrived plots or stereotypical characters in dramatic works. - AFP/ra
