Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism Speaks

Here are some photos from the Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism Speaks event held October 9th at Mercer County College.  I was so happy to have Patty back again as co-chair, and to be able to enjoy the day with my family, friends, and my second family of dedicated volunteers.  This was truly the most personally rewarding Walk event in the many years that I have been involved with Autism Speaks and its predecessor organizations - the weather was great,  the walkers were full of enthusiasm and smiles, and we raised a lot of money.  As of this blog post, we are well on our way to raising over $250,000 for autism research!  [note: we did it!]

Our dedicated Walk Committee, who spent nearly a year planning this event, pose for a group photo on walk day.

Our friends and neighbors who walk with us as Hillsborough's Hope are so generous with their time.

Each year I get to thank the walkers for their fundraising efforts.  This year, I invited Miss NJ International, Brielle LaCosta, up to the stage to recognize her awareness efforts.

I am hoping that dedicated and enthusiastic Walk Committee volunteer Emily Josephson will be able to join me as Co-Chair in 2012.  [note: Patty and I did not participate in the Walk in 2012]

Central NJ Walk Now for Autism - Sunday October 9, 2011

It seems like it was just a few weeks ago that we wrapped up the 2010 fundraising season for Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism Speaks - and it was!  But already the work begins planning our 2011 event.

The 12th Annual Central NJ Walk Now for Autism Speaks event will be held Sunday, October 9, 2011 at Mercer County Community College.  For more information, please click here.

Hillsborough's Hope was the top fundraising team in 2010, thanks to the generous donations of hundreds of Hillsborough families and the support of our local professional and business community.

Please plan on joining us this year on October 9th.

Thank You Central New Jersey

This has turned out to be an amazing year for Walk Now For Autism Speaks Central New Jersey. Together, we have raised over $230,000 to find the causes, treatments, and, ultimately, cures for autism. We obliterated last year's total by more than $50,000!

What is even more astounding is that our own Hillsborough community, led by the members of our Hillsborough's Hope team, was once again so generous and enthusiastic in their support, allowing us to repeat as the 2010 top fundraiser - leading the way with nearly $14,000.

Hillsborough's Hope would like to thank the following for supporting our team's efforts:

Assemblyman Peter J. Biondi

Mayor Frank DelCore

Mr. Scott Rocco, Interim Superintendent of the Schools

Dr. Neil Shusterman, DDS

Dr. Laurene Wolf DMD, MSD

Principal Volpe, Teachers and Staff at Hillsborough Elementary School

Bagel Bistro & Grill, Hillsborough (formerly Bagel BOP) for their in-kind donation for the walk. Thanks, Russ!

Woods Road School Teachers:

Ms. Whitney Impellizeri and Ms. Alyson Williams for joining our team and working with our kids every day!

and to all of the Principals of the Hillsborough Elementary Schools and Auten Road Intermediate School Principal Mr. Carey

All of the families and friends in the Hillsborough School District who have so generously contributed to our fundraising efforts.

Patty and I would also like to thank the dedicated volunteers of Hillsborough's Hope - Kelly Neuberger, Kathy Lang, and Lisa Dickholz - and their families, for giving up their time to work with us on this cause.

Happy New Year!

Autism Speaks Awards Dinner

Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism held its annual awards dinner Friday night at the Salt Creek Grille in Princeton. Seventy-five of our most outstanding volunteers joined Autism Speaks staff members and New York Metro Regional Director Jayne Restivo to recognize teams and individuals for their 2009 fundraising efforts.

Once again, Hillsborough's Hope received the award for top Community Team, and Patty Gillette was the top individual fundraiser.

Patty and I also had our pictures taken with most of the honorees. You can view these and other photos of the event at our Facebook page here.

Our 2010 Walk will take place Sunday, October 10 at Mercer County College.

Rewarding Evening

Hillsborough's Hope, the local fundraising team for the international charity Autism Speaks, held its Fourth Annual Basket and Silent Auction at the Bridgewater Marriott on Friday October 30th. It was quite a rewarding evening.

The Marriott proved to be a wonderful venue for this special event, and quite a change from the North Branch Firehouse - unavailable this year due to the remodeling of their banquet room. At the hotel, there was even enough space to give the more than 250 prizes a room of their own!

There were a number of unique silent auction items this year, including a personal dining experience with Executive Chef Christopher Lee at his New York restaurant.

As was the case last year, deciding where to "drop your tickets" is one of the toughest, yet most enjoyable, parts of the evening.

Of course nothing beats hearing your number called in the ballroom!

It would be difficult for me to thank everyone who made the evening the most successful ever for Hillsborough's Hope. There were so many who contributed - from our friends who solicited donations, to the dozens of local merchants who generously contributed prizes, to the many volunteers who helped set up and run the event.

A special thank you must go to my beautiful wife Patty, co-chair of Central New Jersey Walk Now For Autism and a tireless supporter of Autism Speaks, who probably put in more hours making it all come together than all of the many volunteers combined. Her only goal is to raise all the money it will take to find a cure for autism. Her only reward is the feeling she gets from doing her best. And she always does her best.

Central NJ Walk Now For Autism

Here are some scenes from the Central New Jersey Walk Now For Autism which took place on Sunday, October 11 at Mercer County College. About 2500 people turned out on an absolutely gorgeous day to help raise money for Autism Speaks, the world's largest autism research, awareness, and advocacy charity.

Donate

As you may know, Patty and I are co-chairs of "Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism", the signature fundraising and awareness event for Autism Speaks. We, along with several dedicated volunteers, also volunteer with our own community-based fundraising team "Hillsborough's Hope".

We are always looking to improve our efforts - and especially make it easier for people to get involved or make a donation. One complaint about the Walk Now for Autism web site is that donations made through the internet have a $20 minimum. In today's economy, $20 may be too much to ask for. We feel that there are many who would like to give $5 or $10, but are put off by having to write a check and mail their contribution.

To solve that problem, I have installed a PayPal "Donate" button on the right side of the blog page. Clicking on the button allows you to make a "no-minimum" donation to Autism Speaks through PayPal. All donations are credited to our Hillsborough's Hope team.

The walk is October 11 at Mercer County College.

Our Hillsborough's Hope fundraising goal is $30,000.

Thanks for your support.

Circus - Up Close

One of the cool things about the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus at the Sovereign Bank Arena was that early-arriving patrons were encouraged to come right down onto the floor and meet the performers before the show.

The clowns and acrobats performed, and even signed programs for the kids.

And the actual show was pretty spectacular too.

Thank you to all of our friends and everyone who came to the show to help support autism research. A portion of the proceeds from tickets bought from us was donated to Autism Speaks through Central NJ Walk Now for Autism.

And the show was pretty good too!

Thanks to All

Thanks to all who made the Hillsborough's Hope/Autism Speaks Basket Auction fundraiser on Friday night a huge success! The North Branch firehouse was filled to capacity as we raffled off over 200 gift baskets donated by very generous area businesses, and raised over $9000 for this very worthy cause.

A special thank you also to all of the volunteers who worked so hard to plan the event and make it run so smoothly - the Girl Scouts of the Rolling Hills Council, all of our families and friends, Patty's co-workers at Merck, and our Hillsborough's Hope Team - Kelly Neuberger, Mary Downie, Kristin O'Leary, Kathy Lang, Andrea Graham, and many, many others who contributed their ideas and time!

Thank You!

What an amazing day! There are no words to describe what it was like to look out from the stage at our 9th annual Central New Jersey Walk Now for Autism and see the thousands of walkers committed to our goals of raising awareness and funds for autism research.

It was each of you, who came out to Mercer County College on a beautiful, crisp, Sunday afternoon, who made the day so special. Each year we are getting closer to finding the missing pieces of the autism puzzle - and it's because of you! Thank you for once again making the Central Jersey Walk a huge success!

For the next few weeks, we will be entering your donation information into our Walk website. We will let you know when the entry process is complete. We will continue to credit your team until December 31.
