Happy Spring Holidays!

Happy Passover and Easter to all! We didn't get a chance to have a seder this year but we did celebrate Easter. Warm weather has arrived in Beijing, and we've even had a few days of blue skies. We enjoyed a wonderful brunch at the JW Marriott with friends on a horribly polluted day in Beijing. One friend commented that she felt very colonial, feasting on the buffet while children were being tended by nannies. I responded that today really was the best and the worst of Beijing. The best being with good friends having great food and being able to enjoy it with the assistance of our nannies. It felt like all the Beijing expats with children were at the Marriott this morning. It reminded us of what a wonderful community we have here. But it was the worst of Beijing in the horrible pollution. The kids had a great time playing with little bunnies, egg painting, an egg hunt and lots of sweets. Sophia had a great time, except when the adult sized bunny showed up, she dropped her precious mango sorbet and clung for dear life to me, Josh or the ayi, whomever was closest to her. It was a similar reaction to her first Santa sighting! During the egg hunt, when the bunny showed up, Sophia kept saying "bye bye" to it. Here are a few shots of the day.

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Farewell to Frazzle and the search for a new driver

Update on our staff: The maid that wanted to quit decided to stay and the driver, well, that's another story.

See past post for full background. Now fast forward to last week. Frazzle Du (as we dubbed him because he got frazzled very easily) asked me if we found a new driver. I told him not yet, so he said he would drive for us until we find someone. So, last weekend, we contacted a couple of drivers and interviewed them. The only criteria I had was safe driver (knows the roads, wears a seatbelt, uses common sense, particularly when children and pets are around) with experience and non-smoker.

Driver #1 showed up and got into the car and immediately I smelled cigarettes, granted I have animal smelling skills right now due to pregnancy, but come on! Then he drives without a seatbelt on and speeds up in our compound where children are rollerblading right in front of him. So before we even left the parking lot of our compound Josh and I decided he would not do.

Driver #2 showed up and was fine, although drove little jerky, but nothing horrible. (He was the runner-up)

Driver #3 was a really cute little guy, very smiley and commuted 1 hour for the interview! But Josh noticed that he drove with both feet! We have an automatic car, so he had his left foot on the brake and his right foot on the gas and we think both were pressed at the same time several times during our test drive. He was a really cute guy, but we didn't think having the brake and the gas at the same time was going to be good for our car and we preferred to find someone who lived closer to us.

Then we found Driver #4, who works for our neighbors who have a 6 month old baby and are moving to Brussels at the end of the month. They highly recommended their driver who even cooks excellent Chinese food for them 3 times a week. So we met Mr. Shao, took him for a drive, negotiated a salary and schedule and hired him. However, he can't start until the 24th. So, on Monday, I asked Frazzle Du if he would like to drive for us until the new driver can start. His response was, "I suppose I can drive for you." So I confirmed, "So you will drive for us until the 24th?" His response, "No, I'll just keep driving for you for the long term." Josh and I were a bit dumbfounded by this response since we gave Frazzle several opportunities to stay. So, I just told him that we already made arrangements with the new driver.

So, we've survived being without a driver and I've driven myself successfully to work twice now. I am horrible with directions and check emails or read on my way to work usually, so I wasn't actually sure I knew how to get to work! But I did it! And for those of you who think I'm being a bit dramatic, you obviously have not been in a car in Beijing! And my office is way out in the boondocks, so I'm very proud of myself! ;) It's a very liberating feeling, but I'll be very happy when April 24th arrives.

Kids say the funniest things...

One of Sophia's favorite things to do these days is to play with play dough. I brought some back with us from the US, but the air is so dry in Beijing that most of it dries out in a couple of weeks and I refuse to pay 3xs the price for the same thing in China, so I decided to make some. So, I found a great recipe for homemade play dough and Josh made the above snowman. However, when Sophia saw the formation, she said " Nai nai" (Which to her is breast or milk) and picked it up and pretended to drink it! Not sure where she saw nipples THAT big, but it was hilarious.

A few people asked for the play dough recipe From The Toddler's Busy Book so here it is:

1 cup water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 cup salt
1 tablespoon of cream of tarter
food coloring
saucepan
1 cup flour

Combine water, oil, salt, cream of tarter and food coloring in the saucepan and heat until warm. Remove from heat and add flour. Stir, then knead until smooth. The cream of tarter makes this dough last 6 months or longer (according to The Toddler's Busy Book). Store dough in an airtight container or Ziploc freezer bag.

On Saturday after Kindermusik class, we took Sophia to Pete's Tex Mex for a fix of American grease. Josh left the table and Sophia kept looking for him saying, "Baba, Baba," so I explained to her that he went to pee. Sophia proceeded to the corner where the entire wait staff was standing around and announced at the top of her voice, while pointing towards the bathroom, "Baba pee!" The waitstaff didn't understand her english so they asked me, "What did she say?" It was pretty funny!
