army man texture ball

As I mentioned earlier this week, one of my very first projects as an Interior Design student was to create a texture ball. I seriously thought that mine had been destroyed by my little brother, but instead, it had been sitting in the top of my sister's closet for all these years!

I'm not sure where the idea to cover my styrofoam ball in army men came from, but isn't it fantastic? It actually turned out to be much harder to do than I had planned. As you may remember, each army man stands on his own flat, platform. Well, flat platforms and round balls don't quite go together, so we had to cut each man off his stand {I say "we" because I recruited a guy friend to do it...it's very thick plastic}. So as he would cut off the stands with a kitchen knife, I would but hot glue on the little man's feet and stick him to the ball. We lost count of how many we actually used, but I know it took us over 30 hours combined.

It was one of my very favorite projects. I remember being so proud of it when I took it into class the day it was due. No one else had anything like it. At the time I named it WWIII...but after finishing the "Mockingjay" last night, I'm thinking of renaming it "Panem".

Shape Project

The shape project was a continuation of the line project. The same original photo was taken and used as an inspiration and a guideline to study shapes. Understanding the way shapes communicate separately and a whole was the purpose of this project.

Jeld-wen Door Competition

In my 3D class we entered a door design competition with Jeld-wen Doors and Windows. My design was inspired by Alexander Neumeister. He designs high speed trains and boats. His boat designs are what inspired me for these doors. The lines that cross the doors reflect the shape of a boat. Three wood species and stainless steel are the materials used in the design. The picture above is the model I made to enter to the competition.

These are some of my beginning ideation sketches for the design of the doors.

2008 NKBA Kitchen Competition

A contemporary kitchen reflecting the shoreline of North Carolina

Floor Plan:
Cabinet nomenclature, elevation symbols, and notes

Sample Board:
Classic & Contemporary

This was one of my absolute favorite projects and inspired me
to choose a career in the kitchen and bath field.
I don't only love designing kitchens, but I love all the technical aspects of kitchen design.
I hope you enjoy looking at the plans and models of this kitchen.

DIY: A&W Cardboard Chair

Constructed of 100% recycled cardboard, the A&W shows respect for the environment and its limited resources. Environmentally responsible consumers will love this affordable and unique approach to sustainable furniture design. The A&W displays a true honesty of materials in its exposed layered construction. This innovative modern chaise takes its roots from the concept of modular furniture.

Four of these chairs together forumlates a completely new piece of furniture, perfect for inserting an inflatable mattress into the interior of the arm spaces, great for small apartments. The form of the A&W completely follows its function, which is an indicator of fabulous design.

Designed to function as a root beer-lovers dream chaise lounge, the A&W has a cup holder built in to the arm rest and a custom graphic table top for convenient drink placement, as well as a drawer in the back of the chair that can hold up to 24 additional drinks so you can party all night long! An optional comfortable bolster pillow made of recycled braided black plastic bags is also available. The overall shape of the chaise is rectilinear with a strong horizontal emphasis which contributes to a more sleek aesthetic.

------

This was a final group project for my model making class. We designed a mini-model for the client (my professor), then gathered and glued all the cardboard together, and added a table and pillow for comfort and aesthetic. I loved the concept of putting the 4 together to fit a twin sized mattress. Dual purpose pieces are perfect for small spaces!

Historic Redesign: Rendered Bedrooms

A sophisticated spaced themed room for 2 little boys

An exotic romantic master bedroom

This was our final project for this semester.
My professor once owned part of the old historic Masonic Hall in Boise, ID.
We were to redesign the commercial space (1st floor) and add a 3rd floor to the 2nd floor space.
I had to research systems to add this 3rd floor.
He was my 'client' and I had to design with his furniture and his taste.

This has been the largest project this far in the program because we had 3 floors to design,
to specify furniture for the residential space, to meet all the regulations
that historic buildings require, and select finishes that our 'client' liked.

Although it was a lot of work, he really liked my plans for the space, furniture I had selected,
the finishes for the master suite, and especially like my idea for the space themed bedroom for the boys.

The Passive Solar, Sustainable, Wheelchair Accessible Home

This home was designed specifically for the weather in Mesa, Arizona. Building materials, large overhangs, and lot orientation help the natural heating and cooling needed for this home. All spaces are wheelchair accessible. All building materials, finish materials, and furniture pieces are sustainable.

Solar Study for a Passive Solar Home

This semester I am designing a passive solar, barrier free, sustainable house.
We were able to choose our own clients and own location.
I have chosen to base my clients off people I know and located their home in Mesa, Arizona.
Because Mesa gets so much sun, I wanted to include
large overhangs on my home for a lot of shade protection.
I also wanted to include an outdoor living space for the cooler months.
On Google's SketchUp I did a solar study throughout different times of the day.

Hotel Hallway Sconce Design

My client for this project was a resort hotel.

This sconce includes two lamps: a larger fixture on the top to light the majority of the wall and a smaller light at the bottom to act as track lighting. I added the organic orage shapes for variety and a sense of movement and excitement.

I felt my design was original and think that it would be great to see many lining the walls of a long, hotel hallway.

Photo Line Drawing: Entryway

This is a line drawing that I completed my sophomore year. The assignment was to select a photo from a magazine and reproduce it with exactness in a line drawing. Although my photo had a lot of detail and complicated figures, I really enjoyed this project.

Samantha Ray: Rococo Elegance

In my first space planning class we designed an apartment in the Rococo time period for our client Samantha Ray. Because she is a fashion designer, beautiful fabrics, materials, and an elegant space was important to show.

A floor plan, furniture plan, and finish plans were all developed for the project as well as a project book, finish boards and a rendered perspective as shown above. Below the finish boards are shown.
