Skunk Train Rescued -- June 19, 2013

The California Western Railroad suffered a setback in May when Tunnel Number One collapsed.  Skunk Trains can only operate a short distance from Fort Bragg.  This has hurt the economy of Fort Bragg and all of Mendocino County.  The railroad tried to raise $300,000 to fix the tunnel, but had little luck.  The Save the Redwoods League of San Francisco has now stepped forward and offered to put up the money in return for an easement and protection of the redwood trees along the line.  Repairs should start right away.

I took the photo of California Western Mikado 45 at Fort Bragg during our visit in July, 2006.  Read about it on my Park Trains and Tourist Trains page.

Train Station #13 -- August 5, 2009

Northspur Station is at the mid point of the California Western Railroad. Half day trips from Fort Bragg stop there for lunch. I took the photo in July, 2006.
Tomorrow night at 6pm there will be a meeting to discuss the fate of public transit on the Coastside. SamTrans wants to eliminate the CX to Colma BART, the DX to San Francisco, the 14 which is the only public transit up the San Pedro Valley, and the 17, which is the only public transit south of Half Moon Bay along the coast. The meeting will be at Cunha Intermediate School, 600 Church St., Half Moon Bay.

Train Station #5 -- December 3, 2008

The Northwestern Pacific/California Western Railroad's Willits depot, built out of redwood in 1915. We stopped by on our way back from a ride on the Skunk Train in 2006.
Today I saw New Orleans 952 decorated for Christmas.

Train Station #4 -- November 13, 2008

The California Western Railroad's Fort Bragg depot. We rode a steam-powered train from there in 2006.
Yesterday they were setting up the Christmas tree and skating rink in Union Square.
