News Flash from Brewskie Butt! Pet Portrait Discounts for The Brew's Posse!

From Brewskie Butt, official spokescat of Art Adventures Studios...

This just in...

My person, BZTAT, has been so happy with all my hard work as her Spokescat, she has decided to make a special offer to all my friends! Through the month of March 2009, she will give a 15% discount on all custom pet portraits to anyone in Brewskie's Posse, ie: anyone who is a follower on Twitter, Facebook or This blog, "The Buzz from BZTAT!" Offer applies to drawings, prints, digital photos, and paintings, and is available to followers of Brewskie Butt or BZTAT.

BZTAT works from photos, and likes to photograph the animal herself, if possible (local to Canton, Ohio area), but will work from your photos as well. Prices are very reasonable without the discount and are based upon the size of the piece, the surface and media, and difficulty of the image (multiple pets in one painting add difficulty). Shipping costs are extra. Payment in advance is required. Portraits generally take 2-3 weeks to complete depending on difficulty and waiting list.

Help Homeless Pets

As an artist inspired by love of pets, I like to support groups that help pets as much as I can. Did you know that there are lots of pets in your community needing homes? Did you know that there are wonderful rescue groups working to match homeless animals with people who want to love them? These groups need help to survive so that they can continue to do great work. I have signed up my cats' favorite rescue group, Woozez Animal Rescue, for a contest to receive donations from a fund raising cat, Romeo the Cat. Romeo contributes money to animal rescue for every follower he gets on Twitter, so please follow @romeothecat if you are a Twitterer!!!

"Rediscovery" - Winner of the 2009 Hearts with Hope Art Contest for the Domestic Violence Project

"Rediscovery" by BZTAT
Acrylic and Mixed Media on Wood
36" X 40"

In addition to being an artist, I also have a career as a Professional Clinical Counselor. I work primarily with children and adolescents who are survivors of emotional trauma, so I have known a number of children who have witnessed domestic violence. Recently, The Domestic Violence Project of Stark County held an art contest to raise awareness about the issue of domestic violence. I feel very honored that my entry entitled "Rediscovery" was selected as the winner of that contest among several other beautiful works of art.

As a therapist, I have seen many children haunted by the pain of violence within their homes. These children seem to lose their innocence as they live in fear for their own and for their family's safety. I am often surprised, however, to see these children draw and paint and let their spirits be free, showing that their souls are still filled with wonder, despite the trepidation that they may have about their lives.

Rediscovering and exploring that wonder is the most gratifying part of being a therapist. Expressing that kind of wonder through an artistic language is the most gratifying part of being an artist.

In "Rediscovery", a child with somewhat pensive eyes stares out of the canvas, wondering what is ahead of him. A background of fire represents the violence that has been a part of his past. Breaking through the surface in the form of a dove is his spirit of wonder, finding a ribbon of hope, and sailing into a heart that represents healing and support. Supportive hands of caring people release the spirit into the unknown. The white picket fence represents the challenge of finding "normalcy" in what has been an abnormal world of fear for the child.

We do not know the resolution of the child's dilemma of finding hope in the face of fear. We do, however, recognize that the child can recover and rediscover what is true to his spirit. It is our challenge to find ways to guide and support that truth into being.

I have made other artworks that incorporate my discoveries as a therapist into my artistic expressions in recent years. It is interesting how the two separate career paths of my life have begun to merge over time. As much as I enjoy painting pet portraits and other whimsical work, works such as this one are the ones that make me feel the most complete as an artist. I look forward to more to come.

An interesting side note: Other than a collaborative work that I did last year with students, this is the first time in my entire artistic career that I have painted a human face. Much more comfortable painting the visage of a cat or dog, it was something new for me to paint a person! The face was modeled from a digital photograph that I made last summer as a custom portrait of a child.

Oscar The Cat: Next in the Twitter Critter Series

From Brewskie Butt, official spokescat of Art Adventures Studios...

"Oscar the Cat" by BZTAT

Hi Everybody! It's the Brew! I thought I would share a painting that my person, BZTAT, has been working on. This is a picture of everybody's best pal among the Twitter Critters, Oscar! We moved Oscar up the list of those critters who have portraits in process, because Oscar has fallen ill this week, and I wanted to give a special shout out to him.

I met Oscar (known on Twitter as @OscarTheCat) early in my days on Twitter, but it wasn't until one fateful night that we became best pals. Someone nominated us both for one of those crazy Twitter popularity contests that they have, and he and I both got kinda silly with it. By the end of the night, we were in first and second place! Our friendship was cemented.

Oscar is one cool cat! he is always encouraging other cats and other critters by passing out *nosetaps*, and he has developed a special website just for Cats Who Twitter! Oscar wrote about me on his first "Blogger Tuesday" feature! He also has a blog called The Furry Tripod, so named because of his being a three-pawd cat. He lives with a slightly irreverent younger cat named Henry (known on Twitter as @Quadpawd), to whom he is trying to teach manners and the finer ways of being a cat. It's a big job, but he takes it in stride.

Oscar developed some kidney problems last week that gave his person quite a scare. I and all of his Twitter pals have been sending well wishes all week. Last night, we posted a Get Well card, and well over 50 folks have already signed it! You can sign the card here, if you like. The posting page only displays the last 25 comments made, but we have saved all of them for Oscar to see.

My person, BZTAT is working on a whole series of photos, drawings and paintings of different critters who blog on Twitter. For those who don't know, Twitter is a micro-blogging site where you can converse with others around the world in short meaningful statements. Did you know that there were hundreds and thousands of animals who post on Twitter? There are cats, dogs, horses, hamsters, chinchillas, parrots--even a hermit crab! Each one puts up a small photo called an avatar on their Twitter page, and BZTAT finds these avatars to be very inspiring. Some of the critters have given her permission to use their avatars as points of departure for artwork. Oscar's portrait is the second Twitter Critter artwork that she has completed.

I hope that all our well wishes help Oscar feel better. We love ya pal! Hope you have a Brew-ti-ful day!

The Marketplace: Not Necessarily a Comfortable Space for the Artist

I want to make LOTS of art. The more I make, the more ideas I have for new images to create. It is all that I want to do anymore, it seems.

I want my art to be enjoyed by others. What good is it if I am the only one who sees it? I also want to pay my bills. So, it stands to reason that I would want to sell my artwork to the people who enjoy it.

Artist, meet the Marketplace.

The creative genius meeting the marketplace is where the spirit and the ego collide. We want to stay true to our artistic ideals, yet the desire for recognition and for compensation cannot be denied. How does one reconcile the perpetual paradox?

Personally, I fear the marketplace. it is an intimidating environment full of people hawking their wares and trying to convince others of things that may or may not be true for them. Nonetheless, I cautiously court it, knowing that I won't get far with my artwork if I do not engage in the business aspect of my creative products.

Will I and my art change if we are embraced by the marketplace? That is the REAL fear of an artist.

I have had tentative success so far, matching, no doubt, the tentativeness of my foray into "the biz". That success has had positive and negative impact on me. I have had the kind of success where others grasped and celebrated my vision, allowed me artistic freedom, and compensated me for my efforts. But I have also had success where I had to adjust my creativity to satisfy the whims of patrons, sometimes taking the work out of my artistic comfort zone.

I do not have a problem adjusting my ideas as a result of collaboration, and I am not such a purist that I cannot be flexible with my ideals. I do have a problem being false, though. I do have a problem creating work that does not reflect my own vision. Somehow, I have to find a happy medium, and somehow, I have to find a way to interact with the marketplace that is true to myself.

Where will it all lead?

I do not have that answer, but I am committed to finding it. I invite you to follow along with me on my journey. Let us see where this adventure takes me!

Brewskie Butt the Superstar

Well, I gotta hand it, er, paw it, to my mischievous little feline. He has really been getting the buzz! His last blog about his Twitter buddy Lou really was the sensation among the Twitter Critters. Lou was beside himself with joy! See Lou's blog: Lou Mama's Boy. Yesterday, Brewskie crossed the the threshold of 1,000 followers on Twitter, and today he is featured on the Cats Who Twitter blog site! He is turning out to be quite a good spokescat for Art Adventures Studios, I must say.

Brewskie has his own fan page on Facebook, if you'd like to join, and he also has his own product line on Cafe Press.

Needless to say, we have some major ego management issues going on in our home. Slick is not at all amused at Brewskie's DJ efforts at Blip.fm, and she is thinking someone should put a knot in his tail. Who and Noah, though, are quite proud of him, and are strutting with him to Eye of the Tiger. Slick just wishes that they would all go away and leave her alone. She did partake in the celebratory Tuna that we all had last night, however.

Life is always an Adventure with the Brew around! Congrats on all your success, my little guy.

"Lou Mama's Boy" First of the Twitter Critter Series

From Brewskie Butt, official spokescat of Art Adventures Studios...

Hi Everybody! It's the Brew! I thought I would share a picture that my person, BZTAT, has been working on. It's a picture of Lou, who is one of my favorite Twitter Critter friends.

"Lou, Mama's Boy" digital photo

Lou is the most smiling guy I have ever met! He has taught me that I don't have to be afraid of dogs, at least not when I talk to them through Twitter and Facebook. Lou lives with his adopted sister Pebble in Arizona. He has his own blog Lou Mama's Boy and he is very active on Facebook and Twitter.

Lou's is the first one that she has completed. She is also in the process of making a painting of one of my sweethearts, Madamoiselle Chloe. Purrrrrrr.....She is a very fine kitty!

Next up in the Twitter Critter series include: Monkey Cat (another fine and purrrrty girl kitty!); Pebbles, Lou's sister; India, a real Bengal Tiger; and many others.

Hope you have a Brew-ti-ful day!

Kimono as Art: The Landscapes of Itchiku Kubota

I was privileged to have the opportunity to see the phenomenal "Kimono as Art" exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art last night in a special showing for local artists. Thanks so much to Arts in Stark for arranging the special showing and reception! I found myself completely speechless as I viewed this amazing exhibit, and even found myself with tears in my eyes at the virtuosity. I have seen exhibits at large museums in New York, Washington, Houston, Cleveland, Atlanta, etc., but I have NEVER seen something like this. Being totally void of articulation to adequately describe the experience, I am going to reprint a blog from friend Todd Walburn, co-owner of Second April Galerie, who was able to put it into words. Thanks Todd!

Kimono As Art by Todd Walburn

OK....I'll admit it. I was one of the ones thinking that the Kimono as Art exhibit was going to be one of those over-hyped art events that come and go without making much of an impact on the community in the long run. I can't help it if I'm cynical. It's just the way I am.

Even tonight, as I got ready to go to see the exhibit, I was excited but wasn't sure exactly what I might take away from the experience in the long run. I never studied Japanese art or culture and know very little about fiber art so I felt like I might feel a bit like a fish out of water.

Then I saw it.

Kimono As Art is not simply about art. It is so much more than the pieces you see before you as you walk through the galleries of The Canton Museum of Art and marvel at the beauty of these miraculous works. Kimono As Art is what Art is. It is about the talent, courage, tenacity and craft of the artist. It is a life-affirming glance at one person's vision and his ability to bring that vision to life.

This simply is something everyone should see. It reminds you of why artists do what they do. It illuminates the power of human beings to accomplish what others say would be impossible. It is beautiful far beyond my power to explain and it makes you feel fortunate to be living in a community that can offer such an experience.

I have always believed that great art has the ability to change the way we see the world and our place in it. This is really great art. I feel refreshed and blessed beyond my wildest imaginings. Yes, even a cynic like me.

"Anonymous Feline Spirits"

Updated 7/18/09

My cat paintings are usually very personalized, displaying feline creatures with highly individualized character. People often comment that they "know" the subjects of my paintings, reminiscing about felines who have touched their lives in some way. I generally use a brightly colored palette with a wide range of deep, contrasting colors.

The paintings in my "Anonymous Feline Spirits" series, however, are different. These cats are very nondescript and impersonal, and the palette is restricted to just a few colors. These cats look ghost-like with no distinguishing characteristics. They are anonymous spirits instead of "knowable" beings.

The difference is purposeful. I wanted to use this series to go a little deeper into an animal welfare issue rather than simply painting some fun cat paintings, as I usually do.

As blessed as I am to have four wonderful felines who share their home with me, I know that there are many cats who do not have homes. Many cats roam the streets or countryside after being dumped by careless people or by being born to un-neutered and un-spayed feral animals. Rather than develop spay/neuter programs that would successfully manage and reduce feral cat populations, many communities adopt barbaric trap/kill programs that actually perpetuate the problem of "nuisance" animals. My community is one of those.

Each day, a number of cats are picked up off the streets of my city Canton, OH, and these cats typically are destroyed immediately by so-called animal welfare officials. Few people know or care about this practice, truthfully. The cats are anonymous to us, and we like to pretend that they are not being extinguished from our world. But they are being extinguished, and it is totally unnecessary.

Allowing spayed and neutered cats to remain in designated colonies is a much more effective manner of managing a city's feral cat population, as it allows the cats to chase off interlopers, and it inhibits further population growth. Yet communities tend to disbelieve this counter-intuitive concept, and they dedicate precious resources to trap/kill programs instead. Rather than giving cats a chance at quality life, communities tend to take a hard line with homeless cats, rendering them as unknown lost spirits instead of allowing them to remain viable living creatures.

Not only is it cruel to the animals, it is useless in the process of containing the feral cat population. When one cat is taken off the street, many others take its place. With spay/neuter programs and contained cat colonies, however, the population controls itself.

As I have recently become more aware of the efforts of local and national animal rescue groups, I have been moved by the lack of regard shown to feral and other stray cats by our communities. I have felt a pain in my heart for the unnecessary loss of domesticated animals, and I have felt outraged by the lack of responsibility that civic leaders have shown in managing the problem of homeless pets.

My sense of loss and outrage inspired these paintings. The anonymity of these painted felines confronts us with the truth of our avoidance of the issue. My hope is that others will relate to those feelings and appeal to their civic leaders to address this problem proactively.

The "Anonymous Feline Spirits" series is a group of four acrylic on wood paintings, each approximately 12" X 20". They are on display at Art Adventures Studios in Canton, OH and can be purchased here.
