Life Cycles, Recycles, and Remodels

Sugarplum woke from a sound sleep when something on the balcony outside caught her attention!

She jumped up to get a closer look!

A Scott's Oriole had perched on the rail just outside the window.

The male and female have both been frantically racing back and forth with insects to feed a newly hatched brood of baby Orioles in the seldom used (thankfully!) light fixture above the balcony.
They are a welcome addition to our wildlife managerie here at our hill country house which includes the deer, a fox, rabbits, squirrels, and many other birds and animals. We have been watching what appears to be first time swallow parents trying to build a nest. It has taken them much longer than we've previously seen swallows build nests, but they finally have it built and I think she is brooding eggs.
Walking to the mailbox, I noticed this unusual bag-like nest in an agarita bush.
It is about 10" long and covered with lichen. It was hard to get a photo without disturbing it, but I'm not sure it is still occupied! We tried to "shoot" and run! (With the camera, that is!)
After researching the nest and birds common to this area, I believe it is a "Bushtit". (Yes, an unfortunate name, but a sweet, tiny bird that eats insects and sings songs!)
It's so interesting to observe the life cycles around us. The mama deer are beginning to really bulge at the sides, so I expect to see fawns soon!
On the "Recycling" front, I happened to hit the thrift store during a time when they were gearing up for a move. Every clothing item was 25 cents!! I brought home more than I should have, but it was so much fun!!
I am a "petite" (just over 5'1") so buying clothing off the rack has never been easy for me. I decided that for 25 cents, I could play a little with redesigning some of these clothes.
(Here is my attempt at getting a photo of myself in a linen short's outfit that was about 2 sizes too large.) (See my new summer haircut?)
I first took the sleeves out and narrowed the shoulders.
Then I removed the stitches in the crotch seam and made a skirt out of the shorts!

A quick photo before hemming and final pressing.
I don't know how often I will wear it, but the top and skirt together cost me 25 cents!

The remodeling downstairs is coming along!

I put insulation between the studs while my husband did other work.
The sheetrock was installed and today we have men working downstairs taping, floating, and sanding. Tomorrow they will come back to texture.
This will be my sewing studio! I'm getting excited! I haven't gone downstairs to see how it looks today, but this was yesterday. The furniture will go in the media room, but we're having to move it around and keep it covered. They will take it outside tomorrow. I'm hoping the sun will continue to shine!
My mind is buzzing with ideas for my new space, but I have to wait a little longer! After I paint it, I will still have to wait for flooring and that will come after the bathrooms are tiled.
In the meantime, I'm trying to stay patient!

Bird Tree Blog Hop - My Day!

appliqued and embroidered pillow case border

The sun finally came out, but shadows couldn't be avoided!

Welcome to the Bird Tree Blog Hop! I really like birds, so I was very attracted this beautiful fabric by Tracy Lizotte for Elizabeth's Studio! It's called "Beautiful Birds". I decided to make a bedding set for a twin bed with fabrics from this line.

appliqued nest

I chose to cut the fabric into squares and sew a simple patchwork quilt with an appliqued border. This quilt fits a twin sized bed.

I made pillow cases from some of the fabric and embroidered and appliqued a purchased sheet and pillow case to coordinate. I added a ruffle to the border of the sheet along with a verse and coordinating flange.
I made throw pillows of the tree panel and a bolster pillow from the lining. When the top sheet is turned down over the top of the quilt, the ruffle and verse show.
Sugarplum was suddenly on "hunter alert" and was very fascinated with the birds! (That's how well they're illustrated!)

She finally settled down and relaxed.

Because of all the rain we've had lately, the days have been a little gloomy and dark. I found the sewing machine LED lighting kit by Inspired LED made my sewing a de-LIGHT!!! You can't imagine just how much easier it is to sew when the lighting is really good. This kit is easy to add to your machine and you won't believe the difference it will make to your sewing. You will be able to see so much better!!! You can read about them on their website here. For about $30 you can actually see to sew! I strongly recommend it!

What is Your Superpower? Here is Mine!

My Superpower?
It is the one thing that has driven me every step of the way through my entire life.
What is it?
Creativity!

I firmly believe all children are born with it. Some of us have it "educated" out of us. (You know, "color INSIDE the lines!") For those of us who managed to hold onto it, this world is full of amazing possibilities! Don't get me wrong, though. We need those of you who think inside the box, too! Without you, things would probably be in chaos!

As you can see, I used a lot of embroidery along with my applique. I always do. To me, they go hand in hand. The embroidery can be used to add so many details!

Thank you for stopping by today! Be sure to visit the other sites on the hop:

My thanks to Mdm. Samm and Pauline from Quilt N' Queen for hosting this hop! Their superpowers have made this possible!

My Day - It's For the Birds!

Thank you for joining me in the It's For the Birds Blog Hop today! My main project, shown above, is a wall hanging with paper pieced birds (wallhanging is my design, but the birds are a free pattern from McCall's Quilting. ). The saying is "Use what talents you possess. The woods would be silent if no birds sang except those who sang best." - Henry Van Dyke. That is such a true statement! We are often intimidated by others who outshine us. One  bird above is different. She is colorful and a little non-conformist. Even her nest is different, full of colorful snippets! It's up to you to decide if she represents the best or the one who is not the best, but tries anyway. (I have a feeling there would be a difference of opinion here!)

Another project I worked on were these cute little owl pin cushions!  I found this pattern in Quilt Magazine

And the last project were these hand drawn panels. I drew them freehand with Sharpie Fabric markers.  The chicks are appliqued. Although I haven't decided yet what to do with them, I know they'll find their way into a project sooner or later!

As usual, I want to thank Madame Samm and our cheerleader for this hop,   MARY from I PIECE 2 Mary....
Be sure and visit the other bloggers posting today!

Quilt Inspiration from the Birds

Are you like me and find inspiration all around you? In dishes, in flowers, in art, in nature? I was inspired this morning by an event in my yard.
This is a mother Killdeer. She lays her nest right on the ground in the middle of fields and meadows.
Here is her clutch of four eggs, all with their camouflaging spots. (They are about the size of walnuts.)
She has a pretty smart trick she uses to protect that nest. When a potential predator comes near the nest, she darts away from it and shows the bright rust colored feathers on her back.
That's just to get your attention. Then she puts on an act like a fake "whiplash" victim! She flutters around acting like she has a broken  wing! She calls to her mate while she puts on her show and pretty soon, he shows up and joins in the act! This is in hopes of drawing the predator away from the nest and toward the parents, who appear to be easy prey.

So where is the quilt inspiration? I found these fabrics in my stash that I think would be beautiful in a quilt. The colors I chose are all inspired by this comical little bird, her nest, and the surrounding grass.

Hmmm......I wonder if a similar trick would work to keep me away from the kitchen? I can see it now....."Oh, no! I think I hurt my ankle! I need to just sit and rest it. Do you mind bringing my little Featherweight right here in front of my chair. And maybe that stack of fabrics I've been working on. Thanks, honey! Oh, and my rotary cutter and mat....."
I hope you find inspiration everywhere you look today!
Don't forget to join me for the "It's For the Birds" blog hop starting on the 7th. I will be posting on the 8th.
