Did I mention that my brakes failed on my car? It wasn't a huge deal when it happened, as I was on a street that isn't busy, I was close to home, and I was not going very fast (cuz there is often radar set up there). My brake pedal went from normal to going all the way to the floor. Oops! I was able to stop, though, so I turned my car around and drove home. I was without my car for 10 days, which was not fun at all. Thank you to Kim and Maureen for helping me with necessary errands (grocery store and pharmacy). Thankfully, that is now behind me and all is well with my car...and my world...once again. Whew.
I haven't been doing much since the weekend. I want to, but the few things I have tried to do did not turn out the way I thought/wanted. I hate when that happens! I am going to give it a rest and do some knitting. I am making a winter scarf for myself...simple and (hopefully) difficult to mess up.
I made a linen napkin yesterday. Just one. For myself. I am trying out an online linen fabric shop...linen to use for doll clothes, napkins and whatever else might strike my fancy. It's been washed once and is very soft...so far, so good. This color is 'ginger'...I like it a lot.
The weather has been very cool this week. I don't mind the cool temperatures, as long as the sun is out. Great walking weather, for sure. I do like Autumn..it's just that Winter follows it.
Tag has been doing his usual...laying around with his warthog.
This bottom photo makes my eyes fill with tears. Classic Tag/warthog posture.
My two sisters are coming to Wisconsin in 3 weeks...one from Maryland and the other from Colorado. We will have time for a 'sister's night', which I am very much looking forward to. Sitting around together is a time we all enjoy. I am in the process of planning and making several gifts to take with me...for my sisters, and for a few others I will see. I'll take photos, but won't be able to show the gifts until after I get home.
Tomorrow is going to be a gorgeous day, weather-wise. I have lots to do and it's always better when the sun is shining. I hope you have a great day, too!

Yarn Bowl - A Knitting Must-Have...
Yarn bowls...do you know what they are? They are bowls made with a hole or a design cut into the side of the bowl (usually ceramic)...used to keep your yarn contained and keep it from getting tangled. It keeps your yarn off the floor or anywhere else it can collect lint and pet hair...and whatever else you might have on your chair or floor. What a wonderful idea!!! The only thing is, when I first started looking at these, I didn't find any for less than $35.00 and that was just a bit too pricey for me. Here are a few examples...
I don't know how 'new' these are to the knitting world, but as time went by, I started seeing fancier yarn bowls. Like these...

Well, you get the idea, right? If you'd like to see more yarn bowls, just do a search on Etsy or Pinterest.
Of course, I could have gone the cheap route...

But, instead I found a beautiful simple yarn bowl with a price I could manage. I took the photos with my can of soda next to the yarn bowl so that you can better tell the size of it.
A beautiful butterscotch color...I LOVE it!!!
I have already put it to use and it works wonders! Keeps my yarn in one spot...and clean. And, not tangled (though, truth be told, I never had a problem with that).
Okay, so it's not a must-have, but it sure is a nice-to-have!

Home Again...
I brought Naomi Janome and her niece, little Miss 'nobody puts Baby Lock in a corner!' home from the repair shop yesterday. They were checked over thoroughly and given tune-ups. No problems were found...yay! The 'big bad boy' will be going in late next month.
I am so looking forward to starting me Mum's quilt! I am hoping that it goes together very quickly. I should have something to show you very soon.
In the meantime...I now have two dishcloths that match the dishtowels I wrote about here.
I think sister Joyce may also be knitting a few dishcloths with solid color yarn for me. One must have a color-coordinated kitchen, you know! Not that anything else goes with these...but they could...these are definitely colors I like in a kitchen!
What are you working on this week?

Sometimes...
I knit.
When I am not watching tv or on the phone or reading
(I read just 23 books in the entire 12 months of 2013...
usually I read at least 3 times that many!)
usually I read at least 3 times that many!)
...I am sewing.
Usually.
Sometimes, though, I knit.
Little sweaters.
Lately, hats.
For dolls.
Or, for little boys.
Like this one...
Me Mum wanted to knit a 'football' hat
for Riley, sister's youngest grandson.
for Riley, sister's youngest grandson.
However, me Mum has difficulty knitting these days.
It is very sad, as she was once a world-famous knitter.
Okay, not really, but she could have been!
She did absolutely beautiful work.
That has changed drastically in the last few years...
aging and Parkinson's Disease being the culprits.
I told her I would knit the hat and send it to Riley.
It'll still be from her and Riley will love it!!
So.
Sometimes.
I knit.

Break...
I need to take a break, so there won't be anything going on here for a bit. I have a forearm muscle strain. It happened yesterday...hurt like the dickens! It's better today, though. Rest, rest, rest it. Luckily, it's my left arm and not my right...else I'd be completely helpless.
In the meantime, this is what I had been working on this week whilst watching television...
I lost one of my scarves last year, so decided to make myself a new one...it's merino wool...so soft and warm!! A new pattern, but an easy one.

Yarn...
I really enjoy making face cloths...washcloths just for the face...so smaller than a normal-sized washcloth. They are so easy to work on while I watch tv. My favorite yarn for the face cloths is the cotton/linen blend that I found over at Knit Picks. This is my go-to online yarn shop. They have a great selection of yarns and books, etc., their prices & shipping rates are reasonable, they have sales, and the orders come quickly.
I received a package from Knit Picks today! I've been out of the cotton/linen blend yarn for a bit...finally ordered some. And, I'm trying out a new (to me) yarn called dishie...a 100% yarn great for (you guessed it) dishcloths, etc.
Here are some of my fave colors...
No package from my strawberry pincushion swap partner today. More waiting...~sigh~

Totally NOT Wordless Wednesday Here!
As many of you know, I am a voracious reader. Have been all my life. Would it surprise you, then, to know that I have not read a book since March 18? It surprises me! In my entire life, no matter what I was doing or where I was, I always took the time to keep up with my reading...with my favorite authors. I almost always had a book to read on hand. So, why haven't I read a book for almost 5 months? No idea.
Well, a little bit of an idea. I got u-verse, which means that I have watched a ton of television. 4 seasons of White Collar. 2 seasons of Flashpoint. 5 seasons of Burn Notice. 3 seasons of The Glades. And, I am now on the 5th season of Psych. Plus, the primetime tv shows that I have caught up with on On Demand...and those recorded with my dvr (gotta love that dvr!)...and the movies, of course. (And, in case you're wondering, some of the time whilst watching all that tv...I was also knitting or stitching.)
I have had a lot on my mind...most of which started right around mid-March. That would directly affect my focus/concentration. The entire me Mum and moving to Eau Claire scenario. (And yes, I am moving...but not until next spring.) Retirement. Editing 4 volumes of poems for a friend. Starting a business.
Still. It does take me aback a bit that I haven't even wanted to read! I get notices of free books for my Kindle and I grab the ones either written by authors I've read, or that I think will be interesting. Yet, I have not read a single one of them. My sister, Joyce, tells me about the books she is reading, and I tell her to keep track of what she's reading so that I can catch up someday. When my interest in reading resurfaces.
In the year 2011, I read 84 books, and in 2012, I read 90. Thus far this year, the total stands at 12. What?
That number will change, though. By tomorrow, that number will be 13. woohoo! I took my Kindle down to the laundry room with me yesterday and actually started reading! Relief!
And, in case you're wondering how I'm doing with that mess I created on Sunday...I am still working on it. What a mess! Bigger mess made when organizing! You know, it always helps to have an idea of what one wants to do before one begins a big project like that. I did not. Have a plan. I just knew that I needed to do something.
My bedroom and dining area are total disaster areas. YIKES! What was I thinking? ohwell. I am chipping away at it a bit at a time. Now that I do have a plan. And, I am being ruthless in decluttering/destashing. Luckily, I have a neighbor who belongs to a group of sewists...so they are receiving any/all fabrics that I no longer have a use for.
Sorting fabric. How to organize it. That's quite a challenge. First, though, I put all the fabrics that I had purchased - or been given - for specific quilts together in their own separate bundles. They total 12. Yes, twelve! Then, I put together the quilts tops that I have finished with their backings and bindings (I always get them ready at the time I do the top and back). They also total 12. They are listed on my sidebar under 'flimsies'.
So, mostly what I have left are fabrics that I can use for doll clothes. I labelled my plastic containers: colors (red/pink, orange/yellow, green/blue/purple, black/brown, and neutral), seasonal, novelty (adult and kid), flannel, etc. The sorting begins!
I have my knitting organized...finished products, needles and other tools, yarn.
Then, of course, there's the big a** star rug. I sorted through that tote and yup...I need all of that wool. I looked at the rug and remembered how much I am going to love it! I almost wanted to start working on it! But, I remembered that I have other things that need to be done. Like, sewing doll clothes.
I have yet to do my shelf unit. That will hold my sewing tools and patterns, the jar of leftover binding that I mentioned and showed in a previous post, embroidery floss/tools, and all kinds of stuff. Plus, a plastic container with my 'snow days' fabrics/stitcheries/pieced blocks.
WHEW! I just hope that, when the job is done, I will be happy with the results. ~grin~
Instead of clearing off my bed each night, Tag and I have been camping out on the sofa...and will likely be doing the same thing for at least the next two nights. Thankfully, I have a very comfortable sofa.
At any rate. That's where I am. In the middle of a mess. But, hey! I am reading! Fully engaged...enjoying the peacefulness and pleasure of it. We shall see where it goes from here.
This photo also has nothing to do with anything.
Have a good rest of the week!

Darling Clementine...
ahhhhh...my darling Clementine.
A cross between a sweet orange
and a Chinese mandarin.

It is also the color of the
cotton/linen blend yarn
that I am knitting with today.
I am making myself
a new face cloth.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I did some sewing, too.
And, finished two more blocks...
That's 5 done...
only 4 more to go.
Then sashing and borders.
Very fun and
certainly very easy quilt.
One of these days,
I will get around to
quilting these flimsies.
The 4's Have It!
Been involved in more therapy.
Knitting therapy, that is.
Me Mum asked for small washcloths...
so I made these for her.
4 colors.
4 patterns.
4 inches.
Perhaps I will block them
to make them all pretty and square.
Sewing vs Quilting...and Knitting.
I used to love sewing...any kind of sewing...just sitting down at my sewing machine and spending time creating. I used to sew anything for anyone. Now, not so much into anything. Or, for anyone, for that matter. I do enjoy - to a limited extent - sewing pillows, curtains, aprons, , kleenex cozies, totes and zippered pouches. I guess the best way to say it is this...if it's my idea to sew something for someone...or something that I want for myself, then I am happy to sew it. ~grin~
And, might I add...I always had a decent sewing machine, but not anything as wonderful as my
Naomi Janome. She makes anything I do that much more pleasurable.
Right?
In the above photo...I have all of my Curio blocks pieced and sort of laid out the way I want them. I need a bigger surface to lay them all out on to get a better look. 36 blocks...I am loving these colors! (Good pick, Lindy!) Before I go to bed tonight, the top will be finished. I'll be doing the happy dance, for sure!
So. Knitting. As I mentioned before, I learned to knit when very young and have knit a few things in my life...but hadn't knitted for many years. I started again last year because I wanted to knit socks. But, never one to overvalue my skills, I quickly realized that knitting socks was not for me...it seems that I have a mental block where 'turning the heel' and 'gusset' are concerned. I know if someone showed me I would get it, but in the meantime, I moved on. ~sigh~ Last spring, I started knitting what I call face cloths. Or, call them wash cloths. But, never dish cloths. ~grin~
Cotton. Soft. Fun and easy. Since I started, I think I have probably knitted 3 dozen. I use a few basic patterns, and some have had designs that I found here...football, birthday cake, Christmas tree ornament, and sun...just to name a few. I love having them as an extra gift...and gave all the women in my family at least one for Christmas. I have found that knitting is very relaxing for me (as long as it is not a sock I'm working on). I knit every morning for at least 20 minutes before I leave for work. I sometimes knit in the evening or on the weekends...but really...mostly in the mornings before work. I may expand my horizons and start knitting other things. Ya never know!
All of that leads to this...I have come to the conclusion that Quilting is my Passion...but Knitting is my Therapy.
How about you...what do you feel passionate about? What do you consider your therapy?
Back...For Better or Worse!
I am back.
Finally.
I have a computer...a laptop! woohoo!
I have internet access.
What could be better?
Well, am sure there are better things, but for right now, right here...this is it. I sure have missed posting...and it is a bit difficult to comment - at least more than a few words - on your blogs with my phone...so hopefully, you will see more comments from me on your blogs.
In the meantime, I've some photos to show you.
Not sure if I mentioned this before, but I pretty much gave up on knitting socks...until (if) I take a class. In the meantime, I have been knitting these...keeping my hands busy while I am too unsettled to do much of anything else. I plan to make many of these for Christmas gifts to give my coworkers. This is a fun - and easy - design called 'double bump'.
Me Mum and sister Julie were in town...we spent some time playing cards. Dimes. I won 60 cents that day, so it was a good time. {grin}
I have slowly been getting unpacked. Decided to go through my cedar chest...look what was there? These dresses were worn by my sisters in my wedding. Way back in '74. Junior bridesmaid and bridesmaid. I might have to make something out of them. For fun. What else would I do with them? Don't really have a reason to keep them, ya know?
I put this together last weekend when I just had to sew something! Ya know? I think it will be a giveaway. When finished. Should be in the not too distant future.
And. A few posts back, I posted this photo...
No one said anything. "cat got your tongue"? {grin}
Yes. This is Kisa. My sister's cat. Or, should I say...used to be my sister's cat? Yup, that's right. She now lives with me. And, Tag. Julie wasn't able to take her to the apartment she's living in with me Mum, so...
Never having had a cat before, I am finding the experience quite interesting. It was one thing when we all lived together in a large house...now it's just Kisa, Tag and me in this small apartment. Kisa is a very nice cat, though not real outgoing. In the time we have been here, though, she is becoming more social. And, she keeps Tag company.
So. Here we are. That's all I have for now.
What are your weekend plans?
Catching Up...
It's been over a week since I last wrote.
Guess I didn't have much to say.
A quick catch-up for you...
I went to visit Doreen last week.
It was so good to spend time with her.
She's doing okay for now.
Her pain is being managed.
She's doing okay for now.
Her pain is being managed.
I went up one day, stayed the night,
and came back the next day.
A nice drive...less than 3 hours.
I will go back in a few weeks.
Here she is with her kids, Chad & Stacey.
oh...and her dog, Jerry.
I've been knitting...
did up a bunch of face washcloths.
did up a bunch of face washcloths.
Mostly to give as Mother's Day gifts.
Used all 100% cotton yarns...
so soft on the face.
Here are just a few of them...
I haven't been able to really
put much thought into sewing/quilting.
Too much going on in my head.
But, in a few days, I will be
making up a space of my own.
And, I need to sew curtains for my space.
I bought the fabric, thread, curtain rings
and curtain rods over 4 years ago.
All this time, I've had this idea
of how I want the curtains to look.
Just haven't gotten them made.
Thinking now is a good time, hey?
Jill and Tim were here last weekend...
Joyce and Jody will be here this weekend.
More on that later.
That's all for now...hope your week is good.
A Break from Sewing...
I haven't been doing much sewing this week. I finished my little churn dash quilt last Sunday...and I don't like it. Not. At. All. I am so disappointed in myself. I made two choices that were not (read NOT) the right ones for this quilt...the binding and the quilting. It bothers me that I dislike it. It bothers me that I made those choices. So. I have mostly stayed out of my sewing room. And, that's that. Better luck next time, I guess. {sigh}
So, to take a break from sewing, I've been knitting. I can easily do that while watching tv in the evening. Did I tell you? My LYS (local yarn shop) has a discounted area...one is able to bring in new & in original packaging skeins of yarn and receive either store credit or cash...and those skeins of yarn are available to customers for a discounted price! This week, I bought 4 skeins of yarn for $10.00, saving just over $15.00!!
It's a rainy dreary day. I think I'll make lunch and read. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea.
Oh, and just so you don't worry...my week long break from sewing is over...cannot keep me from it for long. I will be starting a new quilt project - a big one! - this weekend. Stay tuned!
Not Quite Finished...
Here are a few things I have been working on.
My 'swoon' quilt...the top, anyway. I was going to make 9 blocks (remember, each block measures 24.5 inches), but decided that I didn't really need (or want) to make a quilt that was 84 inches square (with sashing & borders). So, I took 4 of my fave blocks and made this nice lap-sized quilt top. Right now, it measures 57 inches square. I think I'll probably use the other 3 blocks for large pillows...or I could add borders and make a few nice baby quilts. OR, I could make one more block and have 4 of them for another lap-sized quilt! A plethora of ideas! {grin} At any rate...I am loving this orange and aqua color combo.
This is the small quilt I started with Cheri Payne's quiltalong. But then I veered off in another direction. No special reason. Just cuz. I am ready to quilt it, but have yet to decide how I want to do that. Ohman, the decisions I am having to make! {grin}
Been working with my hand-pieced quilt...putting the sashing and cornerstones on. I should be ready to start hand-quilting on this very soon. Once I decide how I want to do it, that is! (I told you, didn't I?...decisions!!!)
American Idol is on tonight!
Not So Much...
I haven't been around, lately. Not so much going on. I am having a bit of a problem...don't worry...everything is okay. Just overwhelmed with trying to stay caught up at work (one person new/training and one person who only does half of what she should be doing...and then there is me...trying to do my job plus the overflow in 30 hours weekly. Yeah.) I am finding that when I am stressed, my tinnitus increases in volume and makes me very anxious...it then interferes with my sleep. Not good. At all. But, it will get better. Count on it.
In addition to not blogging much, I haven't accomplished (read finished) much, either.
I did manage to do this block for my hand-pieced quiltalong. Erin asked for a suggestion...I love pinwheels, so this is what we got to piece this week! YAY!
Here are my blocks all together. This pinwheel block was Block 11, but I opted out of two blocks...I think I am going to go with just these 9. Unsure at this time whether or not I'll add sashing.
I wanted desperately needed a no-stress weekend, so I took a break from my list. You know the one...with a bazillion things to do on it. Yeah. No list weekend!
So, today I've been knitting...just to try out this pattern. Easy Mistake Stitch Scarf. It's a basic knit2, purl2, but there are an odd number of stitches, so that makes it work out differently than if there were an even number of stitches. The yarn I used is an acrylic that was sent by me Mum and Aunt/Godmother. Practice yarn. As the pattern says, 'Mistake Stitch creates a very deep and lofty rib'. It is truly scrumptious.
Mowed the dog yard.
Watched a movie..."Tower Heist". It was okay and had some good comedy in it.
Now for some more relaxing.
Can You Say Frustrated?
I have been sewing clothes and following patterns for 45 years. Yeah. A very long time. So, why is it that I am running into snags with my current sewing project? Is it because the pattern is poorly written? (Nope.) Is it because the instructions are incorrect? (That's what I thought it must be for a long time.) Or, is it because I think I know everything and don't read the instructions thoroughly? AH-HA! That would be it. The first snag was because I did not take the time to read the pattern instructions thoroughly...which resulted in me redoing most of what was done. Another snag was hit when I asked someone for a measurement and was given a number that I should have known was not correct. I am trying to finish up what should have been a very simple sewing project for me. I still have a few hours left. I am more than a bit frustrated. I just hope that - in the end - it's worth it. That the article fits properly and that it is loved by the recipient.
Here's a sneak peek...
Though I didn't get as much done this past week as I had hoped, I did manage to finish a block for my hand-pieced quiltalong! YAY for me!
For those of you who are wondering how my knitting is going (I know there is at least one of you out there!), I am on the second heel-less sock and it's going great!
This weekend is all but over...another work week ahead. Hope this one is easier...last week wore me out!
Have a good week!
Nothing Much Going On Here...
This has not been such a fun week for me. I was sick with the flu. I wasn't aware of anyone who had the flu ('cept Pokey) so not sure where I caught it from. Apparently, this is a very virulent strain...just need to breathe those bad germs in - no need to be in direct contact with someone with the flu - and they're yours! For better or for worse. So, I missed some work this week. I mostly laid around...one day I slept 14 of 19 hours. That's some kind of record for me, as I sleep no more than 6 hours in 24 on a regular basis.
I am feeling much better today. Thank you.
Didn't do much at all. I had visited the lys (local yarn shop...ohhhhh...what fun!!!) early in the week and had a good look around. Picked up a skein of yarn, so did a bit of knitting...
a bit of sewing...
and some reading. Also watched the movie, "Bridesmaids".
Not really my cup of tea.
Thank you Mum and Bev!
Just gonna hang out this weekend and take it easy. How about you?
