Today was laundry soap makin day! I got my Granny Clampett goin on, as my "distant-cousin-John" said...now if that ain't hillbilly I don't know what is!!!
Let's make soap......
Here is what you need:
1 bar of soap ( I used Fels Naptha )
1 cup washing soda (NOT BAKING SODA)
1/2 cup Borax
5 gallon container with a lid
few drops of essential oil if desired
(You can use Dove, Ivory, or Castile's soap bar if you can not find Fels Naptha. Woodman's carries it in my town.)
Here is what you do:
1. Grate the bar of soap
It will look like something you put on your tacos!
2. Melt the soap in 4 cups of water~keep stirring until melted
We used a whisk. I think it works better than a wooden spoon, but if you do not have a whisk, a spoon would do.
3. Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full with hot water
4. Add melted mixture, soda, and borax. Getting a toothless wonder to do this step adds to the hillbilly of it all! If you do not have a toothless wonder, you can do this step yourself.
5. Fill to the top with more hot water
6. Stir~let sit for 24 hours then stir again.
Add any scents the next day once it is thickened. I love the Lavender-Vanilla scent, but there are so many to choose from.
This makes 5 gallons of Laundry soap for $2-4 depending on the cost of your soap bar! It is so easy and fast. It took us about 15 minutes!
It will thicken up the next day. Stir each day for about a week, but you can use it after 24 hours. For top loaders, use 5/8 cup. For front loaders use 1/4 cup.

This is NOT my own recipe. It is all over the place. It is even the recipe the Duggars use and if you google "Laundry Soap Recipes" this one will come up every time.
So next week we will make Lye Soap out by the cement pond.....iffen I had one. Really, we will be making Lye Soap next week and will share that cold process with you all....or should I say, Y'all. It was impossible to get lye around here, and I don't have the knowledge to make my own with ash, so we had to order it online.
Hope Y'all had a heapin helpin of my hospitality....sit a spell, take your shoes off. Y'all come back now, ya hear?

Oh Bren, now you have that song in my head. LOL I have made this many times. Works great and you can't beat the price. I am looking forward to watching you make lye soap. I have never tried that before. Looks like you have some good helpers. Have a good week. Winona
Very cool Bren....not that I would do it....I'm not that domesticated LOL.
Crispy
I've made cold press soap many times and love it, but never laundry soap, I think I'll give it a try :)
Have a wonderful rest of the week!
Bren, or should I say Granny Clampett, you sure made me smile with your post today. Can't wait to read your reviews on how you like the laundry soap. I would like to try it, but a whole 5 gallons...I don't know where I would store it. My laundry area is tiny. I guess that will require some thought.
Thank you, Bren!! I will try this!
HI Bren! Marilyn told me she found you and then sent me the link - loved the soap recipe...... seems easy enough, now to find the time!
This looks like fun! School holidays coming up soon here, might be a must do project! Thanks for sharing your experience!
Hugs xxx
I love you to death but......?
I think you've finally lost it. Ya all come back now ya hear?
See I knew you could do it! Easy is it not? I have been using homemade now for over a year. You realize that your saving around $400 or more a year now. Watch how you will not even need fabric softener. The washing soda softens the water. Cool the kids joined in.
i LOVE this soap and have used it for months but just recently switched to the dry version cause it is soooo much easier and takes up lots less space....it is a good use for that lye soap too. I also use all my bar soap scraps and grate that up in there too. Basically for a small batch you use one cup grated soap...lye, fels naptha, bar soap, Ivory...whatever...(I like the Fels Naptha but it is so pricey :D), 1 cup of the borax, 1 cup of the washing soda AND one half cup of baking soda. You use 2 T. of this stuff per load of clothes. I use my fabric softener ball with my fav liquid softener (which I usually dilute to make it go farther ;) ) to make the clothes smell sooo good. I keep a big jar of the grated lye soap and left over bar soap mixture by my washer and then when I need washing powder, I just add the washing soda, borax and baking soda and mix mix mix and put that in a jar as well. Love it! Just thought I would share. :D Hope you have a WONDERFUL day! :D
