Lunar Eclipse

We buzzed up to Fossil Butte in hopes of catching a glimpse of some elk with our new spotting scope and the highroad was still closed. No luck with elk but a nice little hike and some burd watching. As we were leaving we spied a Red Tailed Hawk in the beautiful sunset light so we stopped to try out our scope and the camera system we bought to go with it.

As we were watching the hawk on the pole have dinner this and fussed with the scope and camera a crazy big moon started peeking up over the horizon. That's when we remembered that there was to be an eclipse. Surprised I'd forgotten, as I'm kind of into eclipses because my son surprised us by coming into this world 5 weeks early during a lunar eclipse. (aside, I always wondered if the lunar event was the cause of his early birth... that is until I had my baby girl, who popped out 5 and a half weeks early, with no lunar involvment at all. Perhaps I have a microwave womb?)

Lucky us to be in the right place at the right time to watch the moon rise! As we drove home we continued to have great views as the moon darkened, turned red and and became white again. It was so cool to watch, my best eclipse viewing ever! So thankful that the Red Tailed Hawk beckoned us to stop!

Lunacy

I did it again.
I watched my second ever and second this year lunar eclipse early this morning. Not as spectacular as the eclipse in April, as the moon seemed further away, less bright and a bit obscured by wispy clouds, but I was still glad I got up at 4:30 and went out on my deck to see it. Once again I attempted a few pictures, this time with my new lens and remote shutter release, but, alas, all I got was a small blurry moon... working on night photography definitely needs to go on my 'to do' list.

Moon Baby...

Last week I was able to experience a bucket list item... A lunar eclipse; the 'blood moon' lunar eclipse on April 15th. I watched from the warmth of my hot tub, while drinking a glass of wine... What an incredible experience! Of course being the photo ho I am I eventually felt the need to leave the comfort on my hot tub and round up my camera, tripod ans telephoto lens to try to get some sort of picture.

I have been wanting to see a lunar eclipse since I missed a big one in 1989. My son Matt, AKA my 'moon baby' was born, 5 weeks early, that night. I always blamed the moon for his early arrival, that is until my daughter was born 5.5 weeks early sans lunar event and I realized I must just have a microwave womb. But I love the moon and am jazzed about having had eclipse baby. Am super jazzed to have finally seen and taken a few pictures of an eclipse last night....

I wish my photo were a little better, a little crisper. Even with a tripod it was hard to get a good shot with a 5-10 second exposure and a long lens. I should have read up a little on how to get a good picture... But all in all, not too bad for a last minute idea at nearly 1:30 in the morning, dripping wet in my hot tub robe.. yes, I'm crazy like that. And for anyone who is curious.. this was my moon baby's eclipse... http://www.nytimes.com/1989/08/15/science/lunar-eclipse-for-four-continents.html
