Progress - Block Lotto January 2010 Tic Tac Toe winnings

I've not been around much as my computer had a virus and I was not going to take the risk of passing it on! Anyway it's all working again so I can show you that I've begun to sash the blocks and join them together.  With hindsight I should have checked all the blocks are the same size, and made sure my sashing was too. Nevermind, it'll cheer up my bedroom no end to have this on the bed to protect it against Ivor cat hairs and the quilt police don't know where I live....

I'm using all the blocks I won, but have made some extra blocks in the same white background and then some with hand-dyed backgrounds with white haches on.  I've arranged them 7 across and 9 down in the order of the spectrum (red/ orange/ yellow/ green/ blue/ indigo/ violet but with 2 extra rows that are yellow/green and blue/green because I got more of some colours than others).  Sashing is white, and then the cornerstones (well they're in the corner but don't look to hard at the matching - they don't!) are in complementary colours (well as near as I could find in my stash - green/ blue/ purple/ dark magenta/ red/ reddish-orange/ orange/ yellow).

As you can see, I've done 3 & half rows (red, orange, yellow, yellowy/green mixed) so far, with another 5 to go (green, greeny/blue mixed, blue, indigo & violet) to go.  Poor Ivor cat currently languishes on a plain white sheet covering my duvet cover, when it's eventually finished, he'll be in colourful luxury!

I've been looking at Lazy Gal Tonya's letters and the lettering that was the Block for February (that I didn't get around to joining in on) - and if the quilt needs a border on one or two sides I'm thinking of doing liberated lettering 'Block Lotto January 2010' or similar in white lettering on handdyed background.  First I've got to make the blocks go together, I'm getting ahead of myself again!

I'm biased and inexperienced, so I think it's going to be gorgeous!

TicTacToe progress

Not sure you'll be hugely interested, but I've sewn on the side sashing and ordered the blocks into something I like.  There's 4 'holes' as I need another 4 blocks and I can't decide whether to make them coloured background with white hashes or not.  I've not done the rest of the sashing as I can't decide whether to have handdyed coloured cornerstones.  Decisions, decisions!

First Tic-Tac-Toe Quilt

I finished my first tic-tac-toe quilt, using 9 of the blocks that I received from the January lotto.  (The quilt itself is actually square, although that's not completely obvious in this photo.)  I mirrored the wonky blocks in the setting, and then continued the theme in the quilting.  I echo-quilted the lines in each of the blocks.

I love these blocks - they are so nice and bright.  I can't wait to finish my plans for the next set.

I included everyone's name on the label for this quilt (click the photo to enlarge).  I thought I had blocks from 9 differnt people, until I went to write out the label.  I swapped some blocks around, and apparently ended up with only 8 contributers.

This quilt is on its way to my guild meeting on Wednesday, to be donated to the local children's hospital.

TicTacToe all arrived safely

I've been away from home for most of the month, and arrived back to an huge pile of post - I cherrypicked what I thought would be the blocks envelopes - and this is what I've got - 48 (plus a dud one I didn't enter of my own) gloriously coloured blocks - all the right size, all beautifully sewn (whoever did the handsewing with ends finished so the second cut worked is a genius!), and in an amazing range of brights and WOWs.  It's given me an education in what quilting fabrics there are out there!

Sorry for the bad pic (and the boxes on the floor), it's a small room and there's too much other stuff for me to move the dining table out of the way at the moment.  I'm having a ruthless clearout that is emptying the cupboards quicker than it's going out the door - and significant floor coverage is the distressing result!

Update

Woohoo!  I just checked the mail box (realized that my housesitter had not picked up mail today) and I found my last 3 blocks from Sophie waiting for me.  Here they are, all 48 blocks, ready for me to figure out :)

More Love Letters - Darling

I had a few moments today and I noticed we're close to having enough for two winners, so I built "darling"  It's a bit wonkier than the others, but I like it.  Here's all 5 of my words for the month.
Hunny Bunny is still my favorite.

Thanks.

Is it too late to donate these two to the pot for January?

I know it doesn't get me any more chances, but I'd like to donate these two blocks to the lottery for the month. So this will make 9 + 2 extra for January, if accepted. Thanx. I saw the note about 6 winners, isn't that great! Good Luck everyone!

Kelly's Tic-Tac-Toe Blocks

Kelly emailed me with this photo of her 9 blocks.

Her nine blocks bring our total for the month to 263 blocks. It's not quite enough for 6 winners–we'd need 12 more between now and noon tomorrow–but it's an incredibly impressive beginning for the year.

coming in just under the gun

here are my 9 blocks. The blue one is much more vivid than it looks!

Good luck to everyone tomorrow but I do hope I win! Hehe!!!

Final Three from June

: )

My lonely block

Hi all,

I haven't played the lotto for a little while. Time was running out each month at the end of last year before I had time to sit down and sew a few blocks. Anyway I started early this month and only finished my block last week-end. I thought I would do more than one block but I don't seem to have much WOW, most of my fabrics in that category are more white on cream.
So these my contribution for this month and hopefully I'll be a bit more productive next month!

It is amazing to see how many blocks have been made this month, I wonder how many winners we will have. And the blocks are awesome.

CONGRATULATIONS Sophie for a very nice banner!

New Contributions

I've been watching this blog since earlier this month, when I followed a link from another quilter's page.  I debated with myself whether to participate.  I don't have a lot of WOW in my stash, but I do have a lot of brights.  I had some spare time on my hand today (and needed a break from my current project), so I gave it a shot.

The first 3 blocks were a mess.  One a total washout, because I completely miscalculated how much fabric I needed and ran out half-way through.  One I may be able to salvage for myself - but the coloured strips will not all be the same width, so it's not part of my set for this lotto.  The third one was close - just missed on one corner.   Finally, with number 4, I seemed to have it figured out.   I completed 5 good blocks, found enough fabric to correct the 3rd one, and here are my six blocks for January.  I promise that they are not as lopsided as the picture suggests - I'll have to be more careful with my placement next time.

If I get some more time this week, I may make another 3, but I wanted to get these posted before time runs out, since Sophie was kind enough to add me to the group really quickly.   I'm really happy to be here, and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next.  Please drop by my blog for a visit.

Contributions from June

I had a lot of organizing to do to get these blocks prepared - now that I am set up I'm planning on making nine blocks this month - but right now I'm submitting the first six completed.

The strips are made from fabric from my first set of quilts and they are colors of the rainbow (I'm missing green in this initial batch.)

I'm pleased with how they look, and even more happy that my husband and son both got a little involved with helping me get things set up, picking out the bright materials, and getting me a 8.5 inch block ruler that made it very easy to get to the final size.

I'm glad to have found this block lotto - I think this is just the sort of thing that will get me started again with quilting!

Thank you Sophie and all of you! Hope these will get on the official list for the month!

Lois Goblinf January Blocks

Thank you very much for letting me join, and to Sophie for being so friendly and helpful.  These are my nine blocks.

If it helps to get us to the five winner point, I can also throw in the brown tenth block to help make up the numbers (I realise this won't get me an extra chance, but it might help get another winner's prize together, and I really can't see me using it, I've too many UFPs already).

Fabric Care:

1. Because I self-printed the WOW it doesn't behave quite like a commercial fabric, anyone who wins these should iron them on the Wool Setting of their iron to avoid the ink blackening/ 'burning' or use a pressing cloth - the sateen's got quite a high thread count so does iron quite well on a low heat, the issue is the ink.  I've kept back a strip of the WOW and will send a bit to the winner(s) so they can test their iron heat on it rather than on the blocks themselves.

2 Because the brights are selfdyed I've washed a madeup block at 60 degrees and there was no colour bleed or fading (nor thankfully any falling apart!).  It's all brand new 100% cotton sateen from the same roll.

3.  If you do win the blocks and have problems with the cloth, please let me know as it's pretty much what I'll be using all year, and I don't want to produce something that people can't use.

4 more.....(crosses fingers)

Here are my last 4 (for a total of 9). I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I love these blocks and they'd make a great baby blanket.

Linda Big D January blocks

I had finished most of these last weekend, but my initial version of the one on the lower left had strips that were too big, so I had to do it over. Most of the strips were left over from a strip quilting project I made in a class with Ami Sims last spring. The result will be a colorful picnic quilt, but I have been stuck on finishing the backing. With this month's block as an inspiration, I will now make the back as a giant tic-tac-toe, so that after the meal, the quilt can be turned over and used for a ring toss game (or tic tac toe). hmmm. Now I'll have to make some bean bags too!

the full set!

I posted my first 4 blocks a few days ago, but I had to make more (to improve my chances of winning...) I love these things!

Kathie's TicTacToe

What a fun block to do! The blocks look good from a distance, and close up they look like sticks laying on top of each other. I like the dimensional look. This is a great start to the year. Thanks, Sophie

Tic-Tac-Toe blocks done!

These are my 9 blocks for January. These were so quick and easy to do, thanks Sophie and great ease into liberated piecing! I'm particularly fond of the lime one in the middle and the thinner sticks. The paler pink left middle is my own hand dyed fabric! I'd like to donate my chances to a Newbie being as I won twice recently. Good luck everyone!
