Labor Day Celebration and More

Hello everyone,
Heat and Smoke are the themes for this week.  We have
had triple digit temperatures for over two weeks, and now
we are surrounded by fires.  It is so bad we can
smell the smoke in our house. But we don't have it as
bad as Texas.  I want to send prayers to everyone, who is
suffering from the devastation of the Hurricane.
My other prayers are for everyone traveling on this
long holiday weekend.
At the beginning of this summer, I decorated our patio with a
patriotic theme.  I received "God Bless America" patriotic
plaque for my birthday in June.
Fourth of July I decorated my swing and lounge chair with
a Stars and Stripes comforter and shams.

My granddaughter and I made two pillows from scarfs I found at
Walmart.  I taught my granddaughter how to put a zipper in the
bottom of the each pillow. I have noticed sewing for young girls
is not taught in our public schools.  The art of sewing is
an art I wish was still encouraged as an elective in
high school.
Thanks for joining me today.
Joyously,
Betty

*Memorial Day*

Hello everyone,
I'm still catching up after our Garden Tour and I'm overcome with the wonderful experience. Gardeners are the best!!!!
Today the kickoff weekend to Summer and Sweetheart and I are  enjoying a quiet weekend at home.
We bought a new flag to hang in the front of our house.
As you will see in this post I love our flag.
My most favorite Memorial Day was in 2006 when we visited Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. HERE

Our new flag flying in the wind.

Thanks for visiting and have a safe weekend.
Joyously,
Betty

*Memorial Day 2012*

Hello Everyone,
During my vacation to Oahu, Hawaii this month I had the privilege to share the experience of the USS Arizona Memorial with my daughter and granddaughters. The USS Arizona is built over the wreck of the battleship USS Arizona and was dedicated on Memorial Day 1962.  It serves as a lasting tribute to the 1,177 men who lost their lives on the "Day of Infamy".
Memorial Day
May 28, 2012
marks the 70TH Anniversary of the Memorial.

The USS Arizona tells the story of how World War II started.

The USS Missouri tells the story of  how World War II ended.
Next to the USS Arizona Memorial Visitors Center, is moored the battleship known as
"Mighty Mo"
Particularly stirring is a walk on the Surrender Deck, where on September 2, 1945, Japan signed the "Instrument of Surrender" ending World War II.

Remember Memorial Day in 1776

I am so proud to be an American.  I belong to The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

A descendant of a patriot who with unfailing loyalty rendered material aid to the cause of American Independence during the Revolutionary War.

I had the honor to visit Colonial Williamsburg during a Memorial Day Commemorative Program.

Colonial Williamsburg presents a modern service honoring military veterans who died while serving their country.

I am joining Mary @ Little Red House for Mosaic Monday. I want to share with you my moving experience on Memorial Day. Please link back to Mary's house and see more Mosaics.

The Fife and Drum support the procession that starts at the Palace. Prayers are given and musket volleys are fired at the Palace and the Churchyard.

The rector and women from the town start the procession at the palace by placing an olive branch wreath at the front gate.  They proceed to Bruton Parish Church and place a wreath there, and on to the French Grave site to place a wreath to honor those interred in or near those sites from  the American Revolution and the War Between the States.
A brief commemorative service with musket and cannon volleys take place at the French Grave site.  The French Grave site is the only location where the cannon is fired.  It was a very moving experience listening to the cannon fire and being grateful for the freedom I love.
