Pete The Pup With Spanky

From the Hal Roach Studio on facebook.

Our Gang's Spanky McFarland and Pete the Pup - 1932

Spanky McFarland

Spanky McFarland was one of the Our Gang kids. And he worked with Thelma Todd, too.

He was in the last film of the series with Zasu Pitts, ONE TRACK MINDS.

And here he is with Patsy Kelly, who replaced Zasu Pitts in the series. At left is director Gus Meins. I believe the costume Thelma Todd is wearing is from MAID IN HOLLYWOOD.

According to the caption the other boy is Spanky's brother, Tommy.

Autographed ONE TRACK MINDS Photo

Thelma Todd and Zasu Pitts, Spanky McFarland and everyone involved in the production of ONE TRACK MINDS autographed this photo.

The girl on the left who is dressed in the same costume as Thelma Todd must be her stand-in.

Ebay seller's description:

This is a truly one-of-kind original photo taken on the Hal Roach lot in 1933, with autographs of the cast and crew of the Thelma Todd -- Zasu Pitts short, “One Track Minds.”  As well as signatures of Thelma and Zasu, there are autographs of 18 others, including director Gus Meins and Roach stock player Sam Carter. And yes, that is Spanky, who appeared in this short, on Zasu Pitts’ lap!

"Cal York's" column mentions that silent star Katherine Grant's health was ruined by dieting in this article, which also has some news items on many other stars of the day, including Spanky McFarland.

Hal Roach Gets A Special Oscar, 1984

Jackie Cooper and George "Spanky" McFarland present an Honorary Award to Hal Roach, in recognition of his unparalleled record of distinguished contributions to the motion picture art form, at the 56th Academy Awards. Hosted by Johnny Carson.

This is something that I saw when it was originally run on television. If I remember correctly, film clips from a few Hal Roach films were originally shown during this segment.

Press Sheet For FREE EATS

Press sheet for FREE EATS, an Our Gang comedy produced by the Hal Roach Studio 1n 1932.

An item at lower right proclaims that Spanky McFarland is a new member of the gang. FREE EATS marked his first appearance in an Our Gang comedy.

The old type of artwork seen on these posters tended to depict black people in a way that has since been criticized. But at the time these films were made it was unusual for movies to even depict people of different races as friends, the way the kids were in these films.

And here are a couple of Spanky items that were on the press sheet, I'll put them in at a larger size to make them easier to read.
