COLLEGE GIRLS. Stephen C. Apostolof, 1968

Friday! A calm weekend is coming (for me) after a hard-working and boring week. I feel lazy and I think I should watch a film with a easy argument. So it’s a perfect night to watch “College Girls”, directed and produced by Stephen C. Apostolof.

The Bulgarian-American filmmaker has a long filmography and he worked in many films doing another kind of jobs. He was specializing in low-budget exploitation and erotic films (now you can imagine what you can find in “College Girls”). Maybe you know his name because he directed “Orgy of the Dead” (although he is accredited as A. C. Stephen here), a film in which the infamous Ed Wood was responsible for the screenplay.

“College Girls” happened without any important response. It’s not a famous film in the sexploitaton genre. But if you like black and white erotic films, 60s stuff and psychedelia, this is for you!! 

¡Viernes! Se avecina un fin de semana tranquilo (para mí), después de una larga semana de trabajo. Así que qué mejor que enchufarse una película de esas en las que no hace falta pensar mucho. Por eso es una noche perfecta para ver “College Girls”, dirigida y producida por Stephen C. Apostolof en 1968.

Éste director búlgaro-americano cuenta con una amplia filmografía y varias colaboraciones en trabajos cinematográficos. Su especialidad fue el rollo barato y sexplotation (así que ya os podéis imaginar qué podéis encontrar en “College Girls”). Su nombre tal vez os pueda sonar, ya que fue el responsable de dirigir también “Orgy of the Dead” (acreditado como A. C. Stephen), película en la que también trabajó el infame Ed Wood como guionista.

En cuanto a “College Girls” pasó sin pena ni gloria, pero si te gusta el cine erótico en blanco y negro, el rollo 60s y la psicodelia, es una absoluta recomendación.

Esta semana, vía Facebook de Miriam Linna (Norton Records, The A-Bones, The Cramps...), mis ojos han tenido el placer de visualizar un cortometraje que me ha hecho perder aún más la cabeza. Lo cual no es de extrañar, teniendo en cuenta que se trata de una película del año 1963, con unos protagonistas enfundados en botas y chupas de cuero y una banda sonora con deliciosos temas pop de los años 50 y 60.

Iconografía motera, homosexualidad, referencias a Marlon Brando y James Dean, rollo nazi y dosis de surrealismo, fetichismo y perversión son las chucherías que Kennet Anger utilizó para realización de la película. Todo ello, acompañado de principio a fin, por canciones de The Crystals, Bobby Vinton, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Claudine Clark... (y nada de rarezas, sino temas muy clásicos).

¡No apta para moteros de pura cepa!

This week, via Miriam Linna Facebook (Norton Records, The A-Bones, The Cramps...) , my eyes have had the pleasure of watching a short film that has made I lose my head again. This is not surprising, considering it is a 1963 film, with dressed in boots and black leather jackets actors and an amazing soundtrack with lovely 50s and 60s pop songs.

Biker iconography, homosexuality, references to Marlon Brando and James Dean, Nazi subjetcts and doses of surrealism, fetishism and perversion are the goodies Kennet Anger used to make this film. All of that is servedd with clasic tunes of The Crystals, Bobby Vinton, Elvis Presley, Ricky Nelson, Claudine Clark from the beginning 'til the end.

CYNTHIA MYERS, de Playmate a chica Russ Meyer

Los del Pinterest me han eliminado la foto de Cynthia Myers que véis ahí arriba y estoy muy enfadada. Así que me parece bien dedicar la entrada de hoy a una de las chicas Russ Meyers más hermosas. Y no sólo para mí, pues en el año 2000 quedó en décimo lugar según una encuesta para elegir a la mejor chica Playboy del siglo XX.

Modelo y actriz, nació en Ohio en 1950. Su padre murió en un accidente de coche cuando ella tenía sólo cuatro años, así que fue criada entre su madre, sus abuelos y demás familiares. Según contaba, con 13 años ya estaba desarrollada y muy bien dotada así que enseguida empezaron a ofrecerle oportunidades para convertirse en modelo.

Sus fotos para Playboy fueron tomadas en el verano de 1968, cuando era todavía menor de edad. Por eso decidieron esperar unos meses a que cumpliera los 18 años, y de esta forma se convirtió en chica Playboy para la edición de Diciembre de aquel año.

Aunque su popularidad la consiguió realmente por formar parte de las Carrie Nations en “Más Allá del Valle de las Muñecas”, dirigida por Russ Meyer en 1970.  

Murió el 4 de Noviembre del 2011 en Los Angeles debido a un cáncer de pulmón.

So I’ve decided to dedicate this short entry to one of the most beautiful Russ Meyer girls. And that’s not just for me, as she was voted #10 in a pole for Playboy Playmates of the Century in 2000.

American model and actress, she was born in Ohio on 1950s. She was raised by her mother, her grandparents and various aunts and uncles after her father was killed in a car accident when she was four years old. According with her, she was 13 when her breasts began to develop, so he was offered opportunities to model very soon.

Her Playboy pics were taken in June of ’68 when she was 17 years old. So Playboy waited until Cynthia was comfortably 18 to publish her pictorial. And she became Playmate for the December issue of that year.

Myers really achieved her greatest enduring cult cinema popularity with her portrayal of musician in The Carrie Nations in Russ Meyer's gloriously outrageous "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls”, in 1970.

She died of lung cancer on November 4, 2011.

TERRORVISION. Ted Nicolaou, 1986.

Una de las mejores páginas de Facebook, "Aficionados a la Fantasía y la Ciencia Ficción", me descubrió hace unos días una auténtica joya de la ciencia-ficción más basura que uno se pueda encontrar. Aquellas entrañables y viscosas criaturas del trailer de "TerrorVision" calaron en los más hondo de mi ser.

La primera sorpresa fue encontrarme con la directora del Vince Lombardi High School (¿os suena?), Mary Woronov haciendo esta vez de madre de familia de los Putterman. Y qué familia: un matrimonio 'swinger' (aficionados a los intercambios de pareja); Suzy, la hija heavy-punkie-nuevaolera con su cardado multicolor; y el abuelo, feliz poseedor de un arsenal armamentístico quien enseña al pequeño Stanly algunas lecciones de supervivencia.

No podemos olvidar a Medusa y al novio 'heavy' de Suzy, con su camiseta de los W.A.S.P. (y peluca al más puro estilo Marky Ramone...).

Dirigida por Ted Nicolaou en 1986, es una película de serie B de los años 50 pero hecha en los 80. Y con un toque de comedia, claro. Hasta tiene pequeños detalles de cine 'gore' (adoro esas vísceras envueltas en jugo verde). Y como en casi todo este tipo de cine, al final el argumento empieza a desvariar con lo que es fácil perderse. Sea como sea, es imprescindible para pasar una noche divertida de fin de semana comienzo pizzas y bebiendo cerveza.

Thanks to "Aficionados a la Fantasía y la Ciencia Ficción", one of the best Facebook pages, I discovered a real gem of trash science-fiction. Those lovely and gloppy creatures from the trailer left a mark on me. 

First of all I found with the principal from Vince Lombardi High School, Mary Woronov playing the role of mother of family. And what a family!: a 'swinger' couple; Suzy, the heavy-punki-newaver daughter with multicoloured backcom; the grandad, a happy owner of store of weapons, who teaches to his grandson some survival lessons. 

We can't forget to Medusa or to the 'heavy metal' boyfriend of Suzy and his W.A.S.P. t-shirt (and his wig like Marky Ramone style...). 

Filmed by Ted Nicolaou in 1986, this is like a 50s B-movi but made in the 80s. With a touch of comedy, of course. Even it has some gore scenes (I love that guts wrapped in green juice). And like almost all of these kind of films, the end starts to become delirious and it's easy stop to pay attention. Anyway, this is an essential film to have a funny weekend night eating pizza and drinking beer. 

El payaso CLARABELL: los orígenes de DIVINE

El payaso Clarabell, una de las primeras influencias de John Waters desde su más tierna infancia, en los años 50, cuando veía el "The Howdy Doody Show". 

Un personaje terrorífico para él y de lo más bizarro, le inspiró para el maquillaje que caracterizaría a su musa Divine en "Pink Flamingos".

ANIMACIÓN EXPERIMENTAL de OSAMU TEZUKA

"Historias de una Calle" (Arumachkado no Monogatari)

Hace unas semanas, un buen amigo me consiguió este fantástico DVD que hacía tiempo quería tener en mis manos.

Creo que ningún fan de la animación en general debería perderse esta joya que reúne trece extraordinarios trabajos del maestro Tezuka. Cortometrajes de animación experimental desde 1962 hasta 1988.

A parte de dibujar y asentar las bases de lo que es el manga que hoy conocemos, en 1961 creó la productora Mushi para competir con Toei después de que su contrato acabara. Y siete años después, empezó a trabajar en Tezuka Productions, la cual perdura en la actualidad. De toda esta época datan los trece cortometrajes en los que Tezuka estuvo implicado como diseñador, animador, productor, director…

Uno de mis favoritos es “Jumping”, galardonado con el Gran Premio al Mejor Corto de Animación en el Festival de Zagreb de 1984. La primera vez que le dieron este premio a un japonés. ¿Os imagináis dar la vuelta al mundo dando saltos agigantados? Pasar por rascacielos, barcos, jungla, guerra… ¡hasta el infierno!

 “Una película estropeada” (Onoboro Film, 1985), todo derroche de imaginación, inspirándose para ello en los defectos que el paso del tiempo va dejando en las cintas de cine mudo.

“Recuerdos”, “La gota”, “Pulsar”, “La Leyenda del Bosque”… En todos es común encontrar el miedo a la guerra, críticas a la estupidez humana o el amor hacia la naturaleza. Temas constantes en toda la obra de Osamu Tezuka.

OSAMU TEZUKA: the EXPERIMENTAL FILMS

A few weeks ago, a very friend of mine got for me this fantastic DVD that I had been looking for since a long time ago. 

I think this is a must of any animation fanatic. A gem with thirteen amazing works of Tezuka sensei. Experimental short animation films from 1962 until 1988. 

Apart from being manga drawer and establishing the basis of Japanese comic of today, he started Mushi Productions as a rivalry with Toei Animation when his contract expired. Seven years later, he started Tezuka Productions which endure until today. The shorts films of this DVD are from this period in which Tezuka was involved like designer, cartoonist, producer, director…

“Jumping”, one of my favorites, won the Grand Prize at the 1984 World Festival of Animated Films, held in Zagreb. It was the first time the prize had been won by someone from Japan. Can you imagine going around the world with gigantic steps? Going through skyscraper, ships, the jungle, wars… until the hell!

“Broken Down Film” (Onoboro Film, 1985), a tremendous display of imagination in which Tezuka is inspired by defects that time makes silent film stills.

“Mermaid” (Ningyo, 1964) tells about how imagination can finish in frustration and consisten madness.

“Memory”, “Shizuku”, “Push”, “Mori no Dendetsu”…Fear during wars, critics to human stupidity or love to nature are topics you can find easily in these short films. Typical topics in every work of Osamu Tezuka.

EL ATAÚD (The Oblong Box). Gordon Hessler, 1969

Vudú, catalepsia, asesinatos, un rostro desfigurado oculto bajo una máscara… Todo esto y más nos ofrece “El Ataúd”, película dirigida en 1969 por Gordon Hessler.

Aunque inspirada en “La Caja Oblonga” de Edgar Allan Poe, apenas tiene que ver con el relato y tampoco existe relación con la serie de películas que rodó Roger Corman sobre los cuentos de Poe. Sólo que de nuevo encontramos a Vincent Price como uno de los protagonistas. También comentar que aparece Christopher Lee en su faceta más 60s…

Y nada, resulta que en un viaje a África una tribu le deja la cara desfigurada a Sir Edward. Por eso, a la vuelta del viaje, a su hermano (Vincent Price) no se le ocurre otra idea mejor que encerrarle en una de las habitaciones de la mansión en la que viven. ¿Qué pasa? Que Sir Edward decide escapar tomando una sustancia que le hace pasar por muerto y es enterrado vivo.

No pierde el tiempo

Pero la cosa no acaba ahí. La tumba es profanada y cae en manos de un científico que se dedica a experimentar con cadáveres (Christopher  Lee). Sir Edward reaparece y, a partir de ahí y ataviado con una máscara roja, comienza la venganza.

A pesar de este guión tan atractivo ambientado en la Inglaterra de la Época Victoriana, a veces es posible perderse debido a la lentitud con la que transcurre. Aunque sólo por las escenas sangrientas tan divertidas y el tema, yo no dejaría de verla. Si os animáis,  atentos al esperado final. Ya puestos creo que se podrían haber currado más el maquillaje, porque gente más fea he visto yo por ahí.

Es creíble...

Voodoo, catalepsy, murders, a disfigured hidden face by a mask…”The Oblong Box”, a film directed by Gordon Hessler in 1969, offers all this stuff and more.

Although it was inspired by “The Oblong Box” of Edgar Allan Poe, it hardly have to do with the short story and neither there’s a connection with the films Roger Corman made about Poe’s tales.  It’s just that Vincent Price is the main character again. Also I must say Christopher Lee appears in his most 60s side.

Anyway, the film is about Sir Edward’s face is disfigured by an African tribe for a holidays. That’s way when they came back from the travel, he is locked up in one room of the mansion by her brother (Vincent Price) who has not another better idea. So, what’s happen? Sir Edward decides to escape taking a substance which makes he looks like dead and he’s buried alive.

But things haven’t finished yet. The grave is profaned and it falls into scientist’s hands who is dedicated to make experiments with corpses (Christopher Lee). Sir Edward reappears with a red mask and vengeance starts.

Despite this attractive screenplay set in England for the Victorian Era, sometimes it’s possible you can loose the thread because of the slowness of the film. Although just for the funny bloody scenes and topics I’d watch it again. Ok, if you encourage to see this film, stay tuned to he expecting end. I think they have should worked much more on the make-up, because I’ve seen uglier people on the streets…
