Hurricane Sandy, October 2012

Hurricane Sandy wasn't quite as scary for us as Hurricane Irene, but it was still dramatic and quite the experience. Our house in Charlestwon is one mile inland from Qeba beach, which is where the kids are standing in these pictures. A large portion of the houses on this beach were destroyed and underwater the next day.  Probably wasn't the best idea to drive there, but alas we can't help ourselves. When we realized how bad the storm was going to hit our neighborhood we decided to pack up and head inland to a freinds house. Before long we discovered the roads were already too bad, and we had to head for shelter. We ended up having to drive under these trees in the road that were dangling on power lines. Not a fun situation. We were out of power for over a week. School, and even Halloween was cancelled. We survived on Peanut Butter, and beef jerky. We loved lighting the candles at night, and cozying up as a family.
Ryan, along with a bunch of guys from our Narragansett Ward were able to drive to New York and assist with the clean up there. It was a very humbling experience, and made us feel very blessed that it was only power we lost. So many lost all of their physical belongings. Later in December we were in New York. We didn't know the subway was still underwater and went underground to catch the subway. It was very eerie to see the entire thing still broken down from the hurricane.
