I spotted Zaky when he entered the bus. He was the last to enter and I started at him as he made his way to the empty seat in front of me. He was dressed in his usual fitted trousers and long sleeve shirt with the sleeves folded just to the elbows. He was by far the best dresser at work. Maybe it had more to do with his body rather than the clothes. I noticed I was staring and looked away. I had never spoken to him before. I just didn't know how. I heard a notification on my phone and checked it. It was Dede. She was sitting two rows behind me. "Talk to him already. I know you want to."Her message said. I turned around to look at her and she winked at me. I giggled and replied with "My sister, it's easier said than done." Then the bus took off.
My crush on Zaky started the very first day I saw him. He came to drop off something for my boss with Dede. There was something about him. He was obviously extremely good looking but he had that humble demeanour that just got me hooked. He was the type of guy who would offer his seat to an older person if the work bus got full. He did that once for one of our janitors. She said she didn't mind standing but he insisted saying he had been sitting all day. It didn't make any sense why I was too shy to talk to him. He was a nice guy. His stop was two stops before mine. "Look sharp before those head office girls get their hands on this guy oh." Dede teased in another message. Goodness she was right! She found out Zaky was going back to work at our head office on Monday. He was here for 2 months to replace a staff member who was on leave. The ladies at headquarters were known for their 'manizing' nature.
I took a deep breath and stretched my hand to tap his shoulder. Just before my palm landed someone called him and I pulled back. It was a lady. She got up from her seat and sat next to him. My heart started pounding. Why, I wasn't sure. I turned to look at Dede with an 'I tried' expression. She wasn't amused either. I sat there as Zaky chat with this lady. In no time at all the bus stopped and the lady stood up with Zaky. I watched him walk out with her. I felt all my shyness disappear but it was too late. I put my head down and started banging my head lightly on the back of the empty seat in front of mine. "You blew it, you totally blew it." I whispered over and over again.
"Are you OK? " I heard someone ask. I looked up, parting my braids to see who it was. It was him, Zaky!

The good life
![]() |

I signalled the waiter to bring me another glass of whiskey. The football match I was
watching wasn't as exciting as I had hoped. The teams that were playing were
not exactly the strongest but it was either that or staying at home to listen
to my wife nag about this or that. That was when I saw her. Samira, the girl I
had the longest crush on. She was just as pretty as I last saw her in
university. Her long hair was flowing on her back as usual. When I saw Samira's
mother I knew where she got all her looks from. She was with two other ladies,
coming from the VIP part of the pub. I waved at her and she smiled when she saw
me. She whispered something to her friends and walked to me.
"Peter,
I haven't seen you in forever." Samira said joining me at my table. I
nodded and asked how she was doing. She was still witty. I really liked that
about her. After some small talk she informed me that it was one of her friends’
birthday and they came to chill out a bit. She made me think about my own
social life. Well,if watching football matches in pubs counted then at least I
had one but unfortunately I had a curfew. 10pm and Afua would call me. Samira
made me envy her more when she told me about their plans for later that
evening. She was clearly living a fun life. She froze all of a sudden and
looked at my wedding band. She congratulated me and I managed to smile. There
was a time I would smile much broader when someone congratulated me but now
with the baby, things were very different. Afua barely noticed me. All her
attention was on our baby but who was I to complain? After all, she was the one
taking care of the baby most of the time so I had no opinion even in my own
house.
Samira
invited me to join her on their chilling spree. I was extremely surprised she
asked. To be honest it seemed like she was flirting with me. I was unsure
because all the years I had known her she never showed much interest in me. Hey
who knows maybe she preferred married men. Her interest made me very excited.
There was no way I was going to refuse. She made all 4 of us leave in her car.
She insisted on me leaving mine behind. "It'll be more fun if we are all
together." She said and winked at me. I almost believed the whisky was
making this all up. When I saw Samira's Land Cruiser I realized life was good
for her. She drove just as crazy as her personality. My wife was a fast driver
but Samira was on a different level. Her friends seemed just as wild because I
was the only one clinging to my seat belt. We arrived at a huge mansion. Was this
her house? I remember her parents’ house from back in the day. It wasn't half
as big as this. She seemed to read my mind when she said, "This is a
friend of mine's place. He's out of town for a while so he said we could use
it." I nodded.
The
interior of the house was like one of those fancy homes you see in decor
magazines. Samira turned on some music and they did some dancing. The birthday
girl called a couple of friends and asked them to come over. In less than 30
minutes there were about 9 more people in the house. There was music and drinks
all around and a tennis Wii game going on. In the midst of all the fun I
noticed my curfew was drawing near. Why couldn't Afua organize little parties
like this once in a while? Just when I spotted Samira and was going to tell her
my plans to leave she grabbed my hand and said she wanted to show me something.
I walked with her to the back of the house. There was a beautiful pool there.
"How about a swim?' She offered. "What, like now?" I asked. She
laughed and nodded. Before I could say anything she took off her dress. The
Lord knows all sorts of things rushed through my head. She got into the water
and asked me to join her. I fought hard to refuse. Half of my mind was focused
on Samira in her underwear floating in the water and the other half was on my
wife and our daughter. "I have to leave." I managed to say. Samira's
face dropped. "Is it because you are married? Why shouldn't married people
have fun huh?" She asked. I wasn't sure what to say.
I sat
down by the pool with my trousers folded up and my legs in the water. I just
watched Samira swim, extremely considering joining her. I knew I couldn't
resist her for too long. "You know that ring you are wearing is like a
prison." Samira said. I shrugged. "That's why I'm free." She
said giving a backstroke. "When you find the right guy you'll think
differently." I said. She stopped and turned to look at me. "I don't
think so. I don't see what marriage or love can give me that I can't
have." She added. I thought about Afua immediately she said that. I tried
to list the things she added to my life. The list was so long I smiled. Afua
was the right person for me. I mean I was here in a place I would have died to
be in some years ago, thinking about my wife. Samira asked why I was smiling. I
told her and she got a bit upset.
Samira
got out of the pool and grabbed a towel. She wore some clothes and without
saying anything grabbed her car keys to drop me off. On my way back still in
silence, Afua called. I expected to hear 'where are you' but instead she said
our daughter said daddy. I laughed as we made fun of our little girl over the
phone. When I remembered where I was quickly wrapped up
the call. "It's worth it huh?" Samira asked. She was driving much
slower. I nodded. I really didn't want to go talk much about how much I loved
my family. "But you looked so miserable at the bar. Married people look
all sad but they always go back to their wives." She said. Her tone had
changed. "Loving someone doesn't mean you won't have problems with them.
It just means you'll always be there for each other. I guess that's one
beautiful thing about it." I said. She turned to me and smiled. When we
got to my car she dropped me off and waved as she left without saying another
word.
When I
got home the first thing I did was look for Afua and gave her a deep kiss. She
smiled and asked what we were celebrating. "My baby called me daddy. It's
official, I'm her daddy." I said. She laughed and held her mouth to muffle
the sound in order not to wake the baby up.

Grace of fear 2
The bikers rode around yelling at each other for about 10 minutes and left. When all was clear Baaba looked for her keys and made a run for it. Luckily for her they didn't return. She breathed a sigh of relief when she entered her Auntie's house. Her hands were still trembling with fear when she laid down to sleep. After another 30 minutes she managed to fall asleep.
Baaba went about her morning chores very quickly the next day. It was Saturday and she wanted to tell Ralph the good news. As she did her usual trip to the market for her auntie, she was so tempted to buy herself a thing or two with the money. She knew her Auntie would suspect her if she did so she left praying that where she hid the money was still safe. She called Ralph and asked him to meet her at the market. When she saw him she smiled and told him to guess the good news she had for him. He didn't seem amused at all. In fact he was quiet unhappy. This was strange.
Ralph liked meeting up with her and was usually happy when she initiated it. "Ah, what's wrong? Did Bra Yaw ask you to pay for something again?" Baaba asked concerned. Ralph shook his head and shrugged. Bra Yaw owned the fitting shop where Ralph worked. He was very stern and would make his workers pay for every tiny mistake they made. Bra Yaw was another reason why Ralph wanted to leave for Kumasi. "What is the surprise? I have a lot of work to do." Ralph snapped. Baaba felt offended. Why was he taking all her fun away? Just then, Ralph's phone rang. He signaled at Baaba and walked away to answer the call. He was speaking very low so she wouldn't hear what he was saying. When he walked further away and turned his back to her she left. "I'll keep everything to myself then." she muttered as she walked away, a little heart-broken. B
Baaba took the long route on her way home. She wanted to think. It was hard to think with her auntie yelling and screaming in the house over trivial things. As she walked home she couldn't help thinking about Ralph. He was the first friend she made when she moved to her auntie's house. She enjoyed his company because he was always full of smiles. He would always listen to her complain about her auntie and reassured her. Baaba didn't understand why he was acting strange. Maybe there was another girl. One who entertained his leaving town plan more than she did.
As she walked, she saw a large number of people in front of a house. She recognized one of the people, Agnes. Agnes used to work at the bar with her. Baaba walked to her and asked what was going on. "Some people robbed the man who lived here yesterday oh. They said the robbers used a special key to open all the doors. We are not safe anymore oh. The man and his daughter were asleep kwraa. They stole some plenty money the man had and shot him too." Agnes narrated. Baaba listened. "Ei, is he dead?" Baaba asked. "No he's been sent to the hospital. I feel sad for Nasara, his daughter. Her mother left the father last year. They said she preferred the father. Now she'll be forced to live with the mother. That woman is terror." Agnes continued. Baaba's heart sunk. She knew what living with a terror woman felt like. She noticed the time and rushed home.
When she got home she was scolded for leaving a single plate unwashed. Baaba could not take it anymore. She was leaving, with or without Ralph. She went to her room after cooking the evening meal. She noticed Ralph had called her a number of times. She rolled her eyes and put the phone aside. She took out a pen and paper to write a list of what she needed to run away with. Then she locked her door and took out the money. She hadn't even counted it. The piece of paper around the money had something written on it. Baaba noticed it was a list. It read, "tomatoes, fresh fish, cabbage, light bulb, story books for Nasara..." Baaba froze.

I love a man
I love a man who looks straight at me when we talk
A man who listens to what I say and gives it some thought A man who is not afraid to show me his weakness
I love a man who knows I love him and loves me too.
I love a man who understands my dry jokes
A man who can make me smile when I'm a mess
A man who holds my hand in public and flirts like we just met
I love a man who proudly tells everyone I am his girl
I love a man who can finish my sentences any day I love a man who just knows the right things to say A man who believes in me as much as I do him I love a man most importantly who knows he can't be all these but never gives up trying.

Never again
"This is
stupid." I said to myself as I tied my shoe lace. I yawned loudly and
turned to look at my bed. It was so inviting. I looked away almost immediately
and stood up. I stretched like a cat that had been sleeping all day and picked
up my ipod. "Time for some motivation." I said to myself as I walked
to the door. I found my Sarkodie album and plugged my earphones in. I locked
the door behind me. I stepped outside and inhaled the fresh early morning air.
It was still fairly dark. Yes, I was going jogging and no it wasn't my idea. My
doctor recommended it. It felt stupid but it was either this or the gym and I
wasn't ready to pay 200 cedis a month!
I started off with
a brisk walk. It wasn't bad at all. I guess the music helped too. Before I knew
it I was jogging. It was actually fun, well at least for a while. I looked
around and saw a suit shop. The suits looked really good and it looked like the
shop was having a sale. "Wow! How come I have never seen this
before?" I asked myself as I passed it by. I always drove fast to work.
Never checking my surroundings out. There was also a bookshop across the
street. I stopped and looked through the glass. I saw tons of novels. The type
my wife liked. I decided to come to the shop on my way to work when they would
be open. I could get her some books as a present when she got back. I smiled
faintly and started jogging again.
I was so carried
away by the things I was seeing around that I run much further than I intended
to. This was my first day so I planned to take it slow. I got to the bridge and
almost screamed when I imagined how long the journey back was. I stopped and
learned against a tree. I was breathing so hard. "Ah this doctor has
worried me. Now I am going to be dozing at work." I said to myself. Just
then I heard a sound. It was coming from the side of the bridge. It sounded
like someone crying. I could see a figure. It looked like a girl. She had long
black hair in a pony tail. It was still pretty dark and I wondered if this was
a trick to have me robbed. I didn't know her anyways. It was none of my
business. I turned around but still heard her. Her cry just sounded so genuine
and then all of a sudden it stopped.
I turned around and looked at her. She was
standing up now. She put one leg over the rails. I run towards her and yelled,
"stop!". She heard me and stopped she looked at me with fear in her
eyes. "Don't come near me! No one is supposed to know!" She cried. I
wasn't sure what to do so I stopped. "Why are you doing this?" I
asked to buy me some time to think. "Why should I tell you? You don't
care." She shot at me. Hmmm I wasn't sure what to say. "I just want
to know why you are going this far?" I said. It seemed to work. She was
silent for a while. "God took him away from me. I loved him so much."
She said with tears forming in her eyes. "I'm sorry but this isn't the
best thing to do." I added. "Why not? This was where I saw him. I
knew he was perfect. He was cute you...it has to be here." She said,
getting really emotional. She had a black bag around her hand. Probably some
weight so her body won't float. I had thought long and hard enough. I had a
plan.
"My goodness what is that?!" I
yelled, pointing behind her. This was the decoy. I run fast and pulled her away
from the edge of the bridge. We both fell and I held her back. "You may
not want me to but I will save your life. I can't let a young girl like you
kill herself." I said. "What? What are you talking about?!" She
said trying to break free. "Weren't you trying to jump off the
bridge?" I asked, rather uncomfortable. "No you dimwit! I just wanted
to throw my dead dog into the river." She replied pointing to the black
bag. I turned and saw the tail of the dead dog sticking out. How embarrassing I
stood up and she managed to do that too. "You are strange." She said.
I screamed, "I am strange?!" inside my head. "Sorry." I
said and turned around and left. I was too shocked to tell her my piece of
mind.
The next day I
bought a treadmill and never went out jogging again. Forget the gym, I was
going to stay home and workout. This world is full of strange people!

My knight in shining amour
He used to run around the car just to open my door.
He would stare at me and say I'm the prettiest thing he ever saw.
He always held me close and was so excited when we hit the dance floor.
I really miss my knight in shining amour.
It's not like he is gone away into war.
He is still here but things are just not the same any more.
My friends said it's normal, I'm still the one he will die for Please go back in time, go and look in places I never looked before and bring back my knight in shining amour!

What matters most
0ne night my wife and I had a terrible fight. It was very late and I he was just coming home. “Frank you need to seriously decide what is more important, your family or your work!” She yelled. She was furious because our only son was very sick and I rarely had time to spend with him. “Mercy, we are two parents. When I’m not here you are here. Have you forgotten I have paid a nurse to come and take care of him here? Where do you think this money comes from?” I snapped back. “Jackson, are you listening to yourself? He is your son for heaven’s sakes! What the hell is wrong with you?!” She shouted even louder. I was really tired of hearing her nag every night. She would shout at the top of her voice too. I turned around and took off my glasses.
This had to stop. “You know what? I will just quit my job and stay at home with the two of you. How about that? So who will pay for Junior’s medical bills, you?” I asked, trying to stay calm. She opened her mouth and closed it again. “I didn’t think so.” I said and walked off. Then she said something to me. “The medicine keeps him alive but love makes him feel alive.” I turned around to look at her. “Mercy, I love my son and he knows it.” I said and went into the bedroom. I passed by Junior’s room. He was asleep in bed. I noticed the toy car I bought for him two days ago on his wheelchair. I smiled and went into our bedroom.
When I was in bed and ready to sleep I had a call. It was my boss. He wanted me to get ready for a meeting in Nigeria. I was to take the first flight out. I quickly agreed and jumped off the bed to pack my bag. I had to print certain documents too. Mercy came into the room and said nothing. Don’t get it wrong, I love my wife but I feel she can get very exaggerative about certain things. “Mercy, I’m going to Nigeria tomorrow. Quashie was supposed to go but he is sick. I will be back on Saturday.” I said after I finished putting my things together. She didn’t reply. I got into bed, next to her and slept. Things had gotten cold but I was doing my part.
I was ready to leave at about 4am. I turned to look at my wife. She was still asleep. I wrote a note and put some money in an envelope for her. If I woke her up she would either argue or even cry. It was too early for that. I stopped over at Junior’s room and put a 20 cedi note under his pillow. I looked at the pile of drugs on his table and my heart cried. He was just 6 years old. Just then my phone rang. I quickly answered it and walked out. It was my boss. He was already at the airport and wasn’t very pleased that I was now leaving my house. “Jackson, if you make us miss the first flight I’m cutting down on your travel allowance!” He thundered. I rushed off as fast as I could to the airport.
I got there just in time. My boss still wasn’t thrilled. Immediately we took off I remembered I had to finish some typing I was doing the night before. I took out my tablet. Junior had been playing games on it the last time. I just had one bar of battery left. I had to be quick but something caught my attention. There was a recording on it. I pressed play. I heard a rambling sound. My poor son must have hit the record button by accident. Then I heard some voices. I plugged in my earphones to try and hear what was being said. The nurse was leaving the house and was talking to Junior. “I will see you tomorrow ok?” She said. There was a brief silence and Junior responded. He was trying to convince her not to leave and she explained that she had to go. Then he said it… “You are the only person who loves me. Ok, you and my mum. Everybody else thinks I am weak so they don’t love me.”
When we got to Nigeria, all I could think about was my boy. The meeting went smoothly. We had the rights to sell our products across Nigeria but I wasn’t happy. I would be receiving a travel bonus of 1000 Cedis but I wasn’t happy. Unfortunately I had to stay for another three days to give some of their workers some training. My boss left for Accra the next day. All the time, I kept calling my wife but she wouldn’t respond. I knew she was angry with me. I left at the time she said she needed me. I decided to let her cool off. The first day when I was doing my training a man came late. “Sir, I’m sorry I’m late.” He said. “My mother wouldn’t let me stop eating her food, so sorry.” He added. “Be careful oh. If you eat her food so much your wife’s food won’t be nice to you.” I teased. The whole class laughed but he gave a quick comeback before he sat down. “Oh the same way I love them differently I’m sure I will love their food same.” Some people giggled some more and I had to ask. “How would you do that?” He smiled at me and said. “Sir, when you love someone your brain always thinks of ways to fix things. I’m sure if my wife’s food is too salty I will eat it and take a sweet drink to balance it.” Everyone burst out into laughter again. This guy was pretty funny, and then it hit me. He was right!
Instead of teaching for two hours and doing another two hours the next day, I did all the training in one day so I could go home the next day. I booked the first flight to Ghana and felt so proud on my way back. I bought a bouquet of flowers for my wife and toy car for my son. I had thought and found out ways to squeeze in time to spend with my family. When I got home I rushed into the house and called my son’s name. There was no response. The nurse met me in the hall and said my wife was in the kitchen and my son was in the bathroom. I smiled at her and gave her a tip. I rushed to the kitchen. My wife was cooking. I sneaked up on her and handed the flowers over to her. She gave a feeble smile and said thank you. My show wasn’t over. I lifted her off her feet. She shouted in excitement and asked me what was going on. “Did you get a promotion?” She asked. I shook my head and kissed her. She was overwhelmed. “Mercy I love you. I know I haven’t been the best of husbands and fathers but please give me another try.” I said. She smiled and hugged me. It’s like she could feel my sincerity. “Jackson you are a good husband and father. I just want you to show that to Junior.” She said.
Then a loud shout cut in. I dropped everything I was holding and rushed into the bathroom. Junior was on the floor. There was blood on the floor. He was attempting to get into the bath himself and he fell, hitting his head on the bath. The trip to the hospital felt longer than ever. Waiting for the doctor’s report in the waiting room felt even longer. He was taken straight into surgery. I prayed to God and asked him to save my boy. I closed my eyes to pray some more. When I opened my eyes, I saw the doctor walk to us.
The funeral was quick and simple. My wife and I wanted it that way. “Jackson, I’m sorry for your loss.” My boss said shaking my hand. I nodded and he left. I had spent days blaming myself and my work for the death of my boy. What was the point of working so much and making so much money if there’s no on to buy that Play Station, toy gun or even perfumes for? What eats me up the most is the fact that my son died thinking his father didn’t love him. I turned to my wife. She was crying. I held her hand and she put her head on my shoulder. She mattered very much to me and I made sure I would let her see that till the day she died.

The transformed 4
Will took Dean back to his house and told him to start the next day. He told him to keep his old job till he was sure he wanted to leave, which he assured would be very soon. All Dean did was smile and nod. He couldn’t believe his luck. Will said he had a party to attend and left him alone. Dean went to the bed room and saw how beautiful it looked. He jumped on the bed and thought hard. He grabbed his new phone when it was ringing. It was his mother. “Hello mum, I’m sorry I didn’t call you.” He said. She nagged a little bit about the time and asked when he was coming home. Dean looked around said, “Ermm not anytime soon oh. I am at Kumasi now oh. We had to come and do some work at our branch here. The guy who was supposed to go was sick so they took me instead.” His mum sounded surprised. “Oh don’t worry they are paying me more for this. I will be back next week ok?” He added. She calmed down a bit and told him to stay safe. After his call he decided to take a shower.
Dean was getting more and more comfortable with his house as the minutes passed by. He noticed he didn’t have any fresh clothes. He had to get some! “Oh what kwraa. I’m just going to sleep.” He said walking around in his boxers. Then the doorbell rang. He froze for a while and wore his clothes. He rushed down and opened the door. It was her! She was in a black tank top and very small shorts. “Hi, I just wanted to say I’m sorry for rushing off like that earlier. I had a class to attend that’s why. I brought you a cake. Hope I’m forgiven.” She said. Dean was just amazed. He nodded and she let herself in, holding a big slice of cake. She gave him the cake and sat down on the sofa.
“Nice place. I love the lighting.” She said. Dean was just standing there with the cake. He noticed how yawa he looked and walked to the dining table to put the cake down. “Aren’t you going to eat it?” She asked. He turned back around and picked it up. “Sure thanks.” He finally said. He took a bit and sat down opposite her. She was a sight for sore eyes. “Anyways I have to run. Have a goodnight, ok? If you ever wanna talk about this place just give me a call.” She said. She wrote her number on a notepad on the center table. As Dean got up to lead her out he couldn’t help but stare at her. “Thanks for the cake.” He said as she walked off. “Ah Dean, your mof die oh.” He said to himself when she was out of sight.
The next day, Dean woke up late. To his surprise there was a new shirt and trousers hanging on the wardrobe. He rushed to take a shower and wore his clothes. He was running late for work. “Kwasi, I’m leaving ok? Where can I get a car to Circle?” He said almost running into the gate. “Oh no, I wash your car give you. Will send someone make he come change the car. He say you for use this one.” Kwasi answered and handed him the keys. Dean walked to the garage and saw his car. It was a brand new Kia Cerato. He did a little dance and hopped into the car. He waved to Kwasi as he drove off. He made it to work just on time. He swayed his keys as he walked into the building. “Ei you, Greg has been looking for you.” Afua, the secretary said when she saw him. Dean smiled and asked where he was. He rushed to him immediately. Greg was behind his computer when Dean found him. He dragged him away to the store room. “Oh ma guy, what is this about?” Greg asked when they got there.
“Chale you won’t believe what happened to me yesterday.” He started. Greg signaled for him to go on. “I met this guy and he gave me this amazing job. It’s like an advertising job. They will pay me 50 Cedis an hour and guess the best part?” Dean narrated. “What?” Greg asked with almost no enthusiasm. “It comes with a 2 bedroom house and a car.” Dean answered and waved his keys in Greg’s face. “Ei for real?” He asked taking a look at the car keys. Dean led him outside to see the car. Greg was shocked! He put his hand on Dean’s shoulder. “Chale have you done your background research on this company? Are you sure they aren’t doing any Sakawa jobs? These things are not good oh.” He said. Dean was a bit offended. “That be what you dey tell me? I thought you would be happy for me kwraa.” Dean said and walked away. Greg ran after him trying to explain.

A chance to talk to her
She greeted me in the morning but without a smile
Her walk was slow and sluggish like she had walked a mile
There was something wrong with her. This wasn’t her style
I could tell there was something wrong by watching her for just a while
Why could a free spirited lady feel so down?
In all my life I had never seen her frown
Maybe I should go to her and talk to her now
Who was I kidding I was nobody and she was the prettiest girl in town
Then God gave me a push. My boss sent me to go over
I took a deep breath and walked into her office praying not to stammer
“Hello, my boss said to give this to your father.” I said with hope of getting closer
“Ok.” Was all she said, took the envelope and put it into her drawer
I had blown it. I could have asked her why she was sad
I turned around and walked out feeling really bad
“Hi, wait!” She called from behind me and I turned sharply like mad
“You work at IT right? Could you please help me? I think I broke my dad’s Ipad.”
Jackpot! God had given me another chance and I was super glad!!!

The transformed 1
Dean tried sparking the car again but it wouldn’t budge. He walked out and checked the engine one more time. “What’s your problem?” He said to himself. “We are already late for this show!” Fiona thundered. She opened the door and stepped out of the car. “I thought you had enough fuel.” She said. He looked up at her. “It’s not a fuel problem.” He replied. She murmured to herself and took out her phone. “Oh Fiona, I can fix it. Don’t worry we won’t miss the show.” He reassured. She shook her head and took a few steps away. He could hear her chatting on the phone. He reached for his own phone and called Greg. “Hello, chale your car no dey want move oh.” He whispered so she won’t hear. He took instructions from Greg on how to have it fixed and rushed off when he heard Fiona approaching.
“Dean, I can’t miss this show. I’ve called some friends and they are coming to pick me up. They’ll be here soon.” Fiona said grabbing her clutch from the car. “You don’t have to do that. I’ll be done with this in no time. Just give me 5 minutes.” Dean said taking out a tool box from the boot. She giggled when she saw him. “Your car is old; you should get a new one and be free.” She said rudely. Just then a sleek Benz pulled over and she walked to it. “See you later Dean.” She waved and walked off. “Fiona wait, don’t do this.” He called but she didn’t even turn around.
“Ah Dean are you leaving work already?” Afua asked. He stopped and smiled. “Yes oh, I need to meet somebody for something before I head home. I’m still going with Greg though.” He replied and rushed out of the office. He got to the bus stop sweating and looked around for his friend but couldn’t find him. Just when he was about to call him he noticed him get off a bus. “Chale I have to rush so let’s make it quick.” He said stretching out his hand. His friend dropped a used Blackberry in his hand. “Ok, so everything dey job right?” Dean asked examining the phone. His friend nodded and he handed the money to him. Dean didn’t waste any time. He quickly took out his SIM card from his old phone and slotted into his new one.
When Dean got back to the office Greg had left. Apparently he tried calling when he was switching phones. He had no option now but to take a bus. The bus that would change his life forever. He rushed into a bus that was heading his way. Immediately he sat down he took out his new old phone and sent a text to Fiona. “Hi, I’m sorry about the other night. I’ve sent my car to have it fixed. I just went to pick up my bb. What’s your pin?” He typed and sent it to her. He smiled broadly and made himself comfortable. Almost instantly she replied. “Oh it’s ok. You finally picked your bb from the repairers eh? I want to get a new one for myself. A white one. You should take me to see a movie this weekend. Will your car be fixed by then?” She replied. Dean smiled but the smile faded when he realized he didn’t have enough money for a movie. “Why God, why am I so unlucky. Is having a girl like Fiona it too much to ask?” He said to himself. It was when he was replying that something went terribly wrong. There was a loud bang and the bus skid off the road ruthlessly. There were screams everywhere and bus run straight into a big tree. The impact was so great it threw some of the passengers out of the bus.
