Just smile and nod
Okay, question for all you runners out there. Or all you who don't run but want to answer! What is the deal? Why do I feel so compelled to smile or say hello or good evening to everyone I pass while I'm running. Let's be honest here...inside we are all thinking, I'm going to die, why am I running right now, how much farther, I need a drink, it's so hot, ugh I have a wedgie, etc. Yet when we pass someone (usually another fellow runner) we put a smile on our face, and say hello, as if we were saying I love that I am out here running right now and I'm not tired at all. We all know it's a fake smile, so why do we do this? (This does not apply to you Nicole B. I truly believe you are happy when you are running!) :)

In France, it's considered rude to smile at people you don't know (it's almost like you are mocking them.) So I don't know why it is the complete opposite here! Just turn your iPod up and keep your eyes on the ground! :)
It's the same when you are walking somewhere! Through the halls at school, you smile and say hello to the fellow teachers even though you don't know or (only one or two, I swear) don't like.
Well, I always thought that why people nod and say hi was because you are fellow runners and KNOW what each other are going through and that it is hard! A little encouragement to keep going. i love it when people smile at me while i'm running. It is like they are saying, "yeah, we are tough"
And from my (paranoid) point of view I always smile and make eye-contact with men specifically so they know, "I see you. Don't mess with me, pal." Sorry, I'm a safety nut. I hope you always run on the sidewalk against traffic!
I agree with Tiffany's comment. That's what I thought especially during the relay. Those people were just as crazy as me and I was glad they said "hello."
