Birch Tree Paintings

These lovely's were created by 4th graders. We focused on what nature is and how can artists be inspired by nature. We also discussed the parts of a landscape. You can also see a copy of the assessment students had to fill out and then glue on the back of their work.

Hot Air Balloons!

4th graders made these awesome papier mache hot air balloons. We started with a small balloon and taped a small dixi cup to the bottom. Then the kids mached the entire thing with paper (I didn't have enough newspaper or brown paper bag) which worked fine. The next day they picked one color construction paper to mache over the entire thing. Day after they cut out designs and mached them on. Last day, they attached the basket with string! I used an exacto knife to cut the bottoms (baskets) off before class. They look great hanging up even though my picture is kind of dark!

Cardinal Painting

This is one of those lessons that turns out beautiful every year and the kids just love doing this painting! I don't like to repeat lessons often, but this one is a keeper! I switched it up a little this year and focused on depth by painting branches behind the birds....

3-D Houses

In art class, 4th graders studied architecture and looked at how buildings changed over time through power point. Students learned about a variety of architectural styles and the famous architect, Frank Lloyde Wright. Students had to create a 3-D house using at least 3 architectural styles that we studied. To make this project even more fun, we worked with the 4th grade classroom teachers and made our houses light up with the circuits students created in science class. How fun is that!?! 4th graders could choose what kind of house they wanted to make, but many of them chose a spooky house! Such a fun project!

Koi Fish Collage

In Art class, fourth graders have been studying Asian art. At the beginning of this project, the students learned about the significance of koi fish in Asian cultures (koi can represent friendship, love and strength). The students learned how to draw koi fish and created their own original koi artwork. They enhanced their artworks with other fish, lily pads and flowers, waves, and calligraphy stamps. The students then learned how to create their own chop, which is like the artists own personal stamp. Nice work!

Salvador Dali inspired Surrealism Collages

In Art class, 4th graders learned about the Spanish artist Salvador Dali. His style of art is called Surrealism, which means dreamlike. He is most famous for his melting clock paintings, but he also painted strange long-legged elephants and giraffes with burning backs! Students created a surrealism collage by cutting and gluing images from magazines and calendars.
