Tibetan Mastiff ~ New Release at The East Wind

Hi all. When I first saw this new release image called Tibetan Mastiff  from The East Wind, I thought he was cool and would be fun to colour. It wasn't until I looked closer that I noticed the surprise peeking out from behind his leg. Once I noticed that, this image became a Must Have. I googled images of this breed to see the colouring possibilities and then went to town.

The Tibetan Mastiff and wee Unky are coloured with Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. I used short choppy and uneven strokes over a lighter base to create the fur, using several layers to achieve depth. The image was then fussy cut leaving my usual white border and matted with black card stock to allow good contrast with the background. Foam tape was added to the back of the image to pop him up.

The background began as a 6 x 8 inch rectangle of burnt orange coloured card stock with a darker chevron print on top. Rings were added using Jet Black Archival Ink and an Ellen Hutson Bokeh stamp. Text was added using Orange Blossom Archival Ink and a Wendy vecchi stamp. The same ink was applied to one of the Darkroom Door Paint Splats stamps which was then rolled on in several places. To give TM a place to rest his big ol' paws, washi tape was applied to white cardstock, torn, and edged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink. It was then layered under him to ground him.

The sentiment was printed onto white card stock and the words were cut apart and matted with black. Foam tape was used to adhere them in place. A heart die cut from mop-up papers was inked with Orange Blossom, edged with Black Big Brush pen, and popped up on foam between the sentiment and TM's head. On the other side, two Idea-ology Adage tickets were inked with Vintage Photo and adhered behind TM. The word 'your' is an Idea-ology Big Chat sticker. The edges of the background were inked with Black Big Brush pen before the page was matted with black card stock. This serves to strengthen the page for binding and also draws the eye into the page by framing it.

Thanks for joining TM, wee Unky, and me today. We are delighted you did. To see other creations by my talented TEW teamies using this sweet Tibetan Mastiff image, be sure to pop by The East Wind Facebook group where they will be posted throughout the day. We would love to see what you create with them.

A Bump in the Night - The East Wind Challenge #65

Hi everyone! I have no idea how it became the 15th of the month already but that's what my computer is telling me. We have a new challenge beginning on The East Wind blog today. The theme is A Bump in the Night and we want to see embossing on your project. I also thought it would be fun to pull Halloween into this project because things that go bump in the night certainly bring Halloween to mind. I decided to go with adorable though rather than scary.

Aurora Meow Meow is the image which I have featured on my art journal page. I thought this would make the most adorable cat costume and given our usual Halloween weather, it would be very practical for keeping this little kitty warm and toasty. I coloured Aurora with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils, using short choppy strokes where the fur would be. I am absolutely smitten with her beautiful face...love colouring this style of drawing. Aurora was fussy cut without leaving my usual white border. She was matted with black card stock which was trimmed out leaving a black border to contrast with the background. Foam tape was used to adhere her and create a natural shadow around her.

The background began with a 6 x 8 inch rectangle of  one of Doodlebug's Boos and Brews papers. A 4.25 x 5.5 rectangle of orange paper was cut, corner rounded and embossed with a Sizzix embossing folder. This piece was matted with black and adhered directly to the background. Aurora was adhered toward the top of the orange layer and two number disks were glued to the bottom left corner to mark the date of Halloween.

To balance the other side, four different lengths/widths of washi tape were adhered to white card stock and cut into fishtail flags. They were adhered along the right edge and embellished with enamel dots. The bottom right corner was given a double offset layer of punched photo corners to help balance the design. The sentiment was printed onto white card stock, die cut, matted and faux stitched. A tiny punched star was added to the label and foam tape popped it up. To finish off the piece, Black Big Brush Pen was used to edge the checked background so the white edge disappeared and black card stock was used to create a mat which framed the design.

Thanks for joining Aurora and me today. We are delighted that you did :) To see the other wonderful Bump in the Night projects from my talented TEW teamies, be sure to pop over to The East Wind blog. We would love to have you play along with us.

She believed...Challenge #64 at The East Wind

Hi there! Today marks the beginning of a new challenge at The East Wind and because October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, we decided to show our support by making the theme In the Pink. We either want to see mainly the colour pink in your creation or a project for this wonderful and important cause. All of the DT have created with the October newsletter freebie image which is actually a re-release of a retired image. It's called Ashley In the Pink and was inspired by a friend of Unky's who is a breast cancer survivor.

I coloured Ashley with a mix of Polychromos and Prismacolor pencils. She has the most gorgeous hair to colour with all those curls. She was fussy cut leaving a narrow white border, matted with black card stock, and trimmed out again. She was then popped up on foam tape to create dimension and natural shadow. The Think Pink ribbon image was a freebie some time ago on Joanne Fink's blog. Joanne is very well known for her Zenspirations teaching and beautiful designing.I coloured the ribbon image with the same pencils and fussy cut it.

The background started as a 6 x 8 inch zigzag patterned pink card stock to which I added circle and mesh stamps with Magenta Hue Archival ink. Two patterns of washi tape adhered to white strips of card stock were added to ground Ashley and a third scrap was added above her head. Tiny enamel dots embellished the outside edges of the washi and each piece was also outlined in black pen to help it show. Little pierced hearts were punched from white card stock and added in the upper left and lower right corners of the art journal page.

The sentiment was printed onto white card stock and the words cut apart. They were then matted with black and adhered to the background. Tiny black rhinestones became the dots separating the first partof the saying from the second. Enamel pink hearts were added to the top right corner to balance the design and a simple border was doodled with black pen. Faber Castell black Big Brush Pen was used to edge the outside of the pink background to remove the white. A black card stock mat was added to the back to frame and unify the journal page.

Thanks for visiting Ashley and me today. We appreciate that so very much. Be sure to pop by The East Wind blog to see the other fabulous creations by our talented design team. We have all used the same image and it's cool to see how different they all are. We would love to have you play along with our In the Pink Challenge.

Mother Nature's Box of Crayons ~ Inspired by a new release from The East Wind

Hi everyone! I am such a huge fan of fall/autumn. I think I love everything about it including the amazing fall colours. Where we live, there are a lot of maple trees so we get the spectacular reds and oranges which make my heart happy. As soon as I saw Unky's new release from The East Wind shop, I pictured her in fall colours. She is called Aurora "Magic Flute" and she seems like some kind of fairy sent by Mother Nature to remind us to enjoy every moment and all of the simple beauties in our days.

I coloured Aurora with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils and I took a little artistic license with her, I think. I believe the back piece on her head is probably hair but I wanted her to have a head dress in intense fall colours. It suited my vision of an Autumn Fairy :) To give her a place to sit and play her magic flute, a branch was die cut from brown paper, then inked with Vintage Photo Distress ink, and lined with black pen,

The background, a 6 x 8 inch rectangle of mixed media paper, was spritzed with Yellow Rose of Texas, Marigold Yellow- Orange, Hag's Wart Orange, and Rudolph's Nose Red Lindy's Starburst Sprays. Once dry, one of the TH Falling Leaves stamps was applied to the background in several places with  Vermillion and Tiger Lily Archival Ink. Text was added using  Red Geranium Archival Ink and a Wendy Vecchi stamp. Once the tree was adhered to the background, black splatter dots were added with a TH stamp and Jet Black Archival. Aurora was popped up on foam tape and adhered so she is sitting on the tree branch. Leaves were punched from various red, green, yellow, and orange mop up papers. Coffee, Red Geranium, Vermillion, Tiger Lily, and Fern Green Archival inks were sponged onto the points of the leaves to make them multi-coloured. They were adhered to the branch and then outlined with black pen to help them show up against the similarly coloured background. The tree branch was also outlined.

The sentiment was printed onto white card stock, the words cut apart, and then matted with black. Foam tape was used to pop them up and adhere them. A black pen was used to doodle the simple border and black Big Brush Pen was used to outline the edges. Black card stock was used to mat the journal page and provide a frame to pull the page together.

Thanks for joining Aurora and me today. To see what others from TEW DT have done with this gorgeous image, be sure to pop by The East Wind Facebook group today. It's very cool to see where others take her in their art.

A Wish ~ TEW Challenge #63 project

Hi everyone! Today marks the beginning of a new challenge on The East Wind blog. Our theme for Challenge #63 is I Like to Move It, Move It. We have a couple of ways that you can play along. You can either create a project where something actually moves, slides, wobbles, jiggles IRL OR you can use an image where there is movement within it (like the dandelions blowing in the wind) OR you can create movement in the background in an artsy fartsy way. I chose to do the second and third options on my art journal page.

The image with movement in it is called Dandelion and it was one that immediately came to mind when I read this theme. The image was coloured with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. Once it was cut into a circular shape, the edges were inked with Broken China and Salty Ocean Distress inks. The image was then matted with black card stock and popped up on foam tape to create dimension and a natural shadow around it.

The background began life as a rectangle of white card stock onto which I flipped an ink sprayed stencil from Joggles called Bubble Blast to clean it off. The sprays used were Lindy's Starburst sprays in a variety of greens. I love using the negative stencilled image and hate wasting ink and wonderful colour so I often do this. It gives me a ready made background for a project like today's. To continue the flight of the dandlion seeds, I drew, coloured, and Glossy Accented more seeds onto the background. More movement and pattern was created by tracing through ColorBox SwirlDot stencil with a black pen and then filling in a pattern of lines in the open circles. Movement lines were addded beside the dandelion seeds with the same pen.

The sentiment was printed on white card stock and the words were cut apart. Black matting and foam tape were added to the backs of each word. Three large black domed pearls were added to the upper left corner to balance the design but that was it for embellies. I wanted a very light, airy background where the bubbles and swirls played up the theme of movement and the focus was on this beautiful image.

Thanks so much for stopping by today. That's so awesome of you! When you get a chance, pop over to The East Wind blog to see the other fabulous creations by my talented teamies on The East Wind DT. Their creativity always impresses me! We would love to have you play along with us and can't wait to see what you create!

The East Wind Challenge #62 ~ Shine

Hi everyone! As soon as I saw September's  newsletter freebie image from The East Wind which is called Borum, I was reminded of a song my mom used to sing when I was little... Shine On Harvest Moon. That's where Challenge # 62's theme came from. For the Shine challenge, we want to see either a sun or a moon or to see something shiny on your project. Easy Peasy!

Borum, himself, was coloured with Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. He was then fussyc ut without leaving a white border. The sun/moon was die cut from a piece of white cardstock which had been spritzed with Yellow Rose of Texas, Marigold Yellow Orange, and California Poppy Gold Lindy's Starburst sprays which contain mica. Borum was adhered to the sun/moon and then the entire image was backed with black cardstock which was trimmed leaving a narrow border. This added strength to his braid and the rope as well as making the image contrast with the background. Foam tape was added to the back to pop him up.

The background, a 6 x 8 inch rectangle of mixed media paper, was spritzed with Electric Blue Tattered Angels, Ocean, and Teal Color Shine sprays. Once dry, Forget-Me-Not Archival Ink was applied through TCW's Microbial Stencil in several areas. It was also used on a rubber stamp of a leafless tree and stamped across the bottom of the page. This was to indicate how high Borum is swinging. White gesso was watered down slightly and used with a bottle lid to create the white rings. More of the same watered gesso was splattered over the background using a fan brush. Clouds were added to the top of the page with cheesecloth scraps. To add further shine to the page, several sizes of clear rhinestones were scattered across the sky around Borum.

The sentiment was printed onto white cardstock, cut into individual words, and matted with black. Foam tape was used to adhere them to the background for dimension. Black Big Brush pen was used to edge the page before it was matted with black cardstock which provides the look of a frame.

Thanks for joining Borum and me today. That was lovely of you! To see the other fabulous DT creations featuring this same newsletter image, pop over to The East Wind blog where they are all on display. We would love to have you play along with us for our Shine challenge.

The East Wind Challenge #61 ~ Paper Piecing

Hi everyone! It's mid August and this summer can end any time for me. I usually like summer but it has been way too hot and humid forcing me to stay cooped up inside with the air on so as not to aggravate breathing problems. I'm looking forward to a little cooler weather where I can go out and play :) OK...enough whining! We have a new challenge today at The East Wind and our theme is Paper Piecing, something I don't do very often but I love the effect.

I decided to feature this sweet image called Aurora Young Love and paper pieced the clothes. I printed the image on white cardstock and coloured the faces, hair, skin, and shoes with Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. I then printed the clothes again on four different sections of designer paper although the prints are subtle. That was my choice because of the sentiment I wanted to use...everything monochromatic and neutral. The clothing items were adhered to the coloured image and then more coloured pencils were used to add shading to them. The image was then fussy cut leaving a narrow white border and matted with black. The sweethearts were then popped up on foam tape.

The background began with a  white 6 x 8 inch rectangle of cardstock onto which striped designer paper was adhered. A piece of dotted grid paper was torn and layered across the bottom of the striped paper to form the ground where the sweethearts will stand...or kneel.Text stamping and hearts were added with Watering Can Archival Ink and a scribbly circle stamp added with Jet Black Archival Ink. A strip of text designer paper was adhered to the left side of the background and a torn piece of black cardstock was tucked under it to help it show better.

The sentiment was computer generated and Prismacolor pencils were used to add pink to the word colour to tie in with the pink in the image. To add a third repetition of that pink, a length of narrow pink ribbon was used to overlap the text paper and a wee bow was added over that. Two black punched photo corners were adhered to the right corners to add balance. The final touches were to add Black Big Brush Pen around the edges of the background and a black cardstock mat was used to frame the page.

Thanks for popping by today. Aurora and her friend are a little preoccupied but I sure appreciate it :) To see what my talented Blog DT mates created for this Paper Piecing Challenge, be sure to pop by The East Wind blog. Awesome projects from everyone! We would love to have you play along with us.

The East Wind New Release ~ Barista

Hi everyone. It's Friday and that means another new release at The East Wind shop. Today's image is inspired by someone who many of us see each day or at least several times a week. She might be at that specialty coffee shop you love so or just at your local Timmy's (yes, I'm Canadian). Wherever she is, this is a tribute to the one who prepares that coffee so many of us look forward to so much. The image is called Barista but in my mind, she could also be called life saver...LOL

I coloured Barista with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. She was fussy cut with my usual white border around her and then matted with black cardstock. After trimming her leaving another narrow border, she (and her fabulous machine) were popped up on foam tape.

The background began with a 6 x 6 inch square of cardstock which I had printed with a coffee word themed background. I added several stampings of a TH coffee ring image using Coffee Archival ink. A scalloped circle was punched from another digital background paper printed on cardstock. This was adhered to the left side and a small doily overlapped it. Both were outlined with black pen to make them stand out against the background. Before placing the lovely barista on the background, two lengths os washi tapes were backed with white cardstock to make their transparency a non-issue. They were then adhered below where Barista would go, grounding her and giving her a "counter".

The word Barista was created with shiny puffy black stickers. The words life saver were created with my Dymo labeller and adhered over the doily. Three coffee beans were glued to the bottom left corner and five brads were affixed to the top left corner. I chose the brad colours to repeat the colours from the image to tie things together. A punched photo corner was added to the top right corner for balance and black splatter dots were stamped with Jet Black Archival ink. A black cardstock mat was adhered to the back of the page to frame it and add contrast to the background.

Thanks for popping by today. Barista and I are delighted you did. To see what others from TEW design teams have created with this fabulous image, be sure to stop by The East Wind Facebook group throughout the day. The image will be available in The East Wind shop later today.

The East Wind Challenge #60 - Outta This World

Hi everyone! Happy August and if you are Canadian, Happy Civic Holiday today. Because it's the first of a new month, we are beginning a new challenge on The East Wind blog and the DT are working with the August Freebie image from TEW newsletter. The theme this time is Outta This World so we want to see you include stars, moon, sun or planets in your creation. The gorgeous freebie this month is called Marilyn and she is amazing and so glam.

I coloured Marilyn with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. I loved colouring all that hair and those folds...and her baby blues :) She was fussy cut leaving a narrow white border and then matted with black cardstock to frame her. Foam tape was used to pop her up and create a natural shadow.

The 6 x 8 inch mixed media paper background was spritzed with Canna Lily Burnt Orange and Fuzzy Navel Peach Lindy's Starburst Sprays. Rusty Hinge Distress Ink was applied to Joggles Vintage Correspondence stamp and added to the background in several places by rolling the stamp onto it. Jet Black Archival was applied to a TH splatter dots stencil and used to create more visual texture. Three shimmery stars were die cut from recycled packaging using a Simon Says Stamp die. Normally the inside is removed but I liked the look with it still there so the star was adhered to black cardstock and trimmed out. The extra cuts make a cool detail. Before Marilyn was adhered to the background, a length of cheesecloth was placed behind her to represent clouds and tie in with the challenge theme.

The sentiment was printed from the computer onto white cardstock and then matted with black. Foam tape was used to add dimension. A punched black border was added to the right side and rhinestones were added to each scallop. A border was doodled with black pen and Black Big Brush Pen was used to edge the background. A black mat was added behind the page to create a frame.

Thanks for stopping by today. Marilyn and I appreciate that. To see what the rest of the Blog DT created with this fabulous image, be sure to stop by The East Wind blog. The whole team has done an amazing job! We would love to have you play along with us!

The East Wind New Release - Barmaid

Hi there!Tuesdays and Fridays are the new release days at The East Wind shop and I got a chance to play with today's NR called Barmaid. I think all servers work hard for their money and have to put up with difficult customers and situations bars have maybe more of both. I love the expression on this barmaid's face. She looks frazzled and a little wistful like she is doing this job to pay the bills but has different dreams she wants to pursue. Maybe she wants to become a full time artist or run her own business. That was the story behind this creation.

I coloured Barmaid with my usual mix of Polychromos and Prismacolor pencils. The image was then fussy cut next to her leaving a narrow white border and around the bar area where it made sense to me. It was then matted with black cardstock and trimmed out again before being popped up on foam tape.

The background began with a piece of designer paper with this cityscape printed on it. It was cropped to a 6 x 8 inch size, edged with black Big Brush Pen, and matted with black cardstock. White Texture Paste was scraped through TCW Tiny Circles stencil with a palette knife to add a little texture.

The sentiment was computer generated, printed on white cardstock, and matted with black cardstock. Three tiny black gems were used for the dots between Dream and then. The first section was popped up on foam tape to emphasize it and the other three were adhered flat against the background. A black die cut arrow was adhered so it pointed to the first part of the message and a clock button was glued next to it as a reference to her awareness that time is passing to get her dream into play and also because she is watching the clock until her shift is over. Once the barmaid was adhered in place, I decided that I wanted a visual triangle of red accents with her top being one of the points of the triangle. Three red brads were added inside the open arrow and two small rectangles of red cardstock were added to fill in the base of the bridge supports. That keeps the eye moving around the page and connects the image to the background. I like that repetition.

Thanks for joining Barmaid and me today. We appreciate that! To see what others on our talented The East Wind DT have created with this fabulous image, be sure to pop by The East Wind Facebook group where they will be posted throughout the day. She will be available in TEW shop later today. I'd love to see what you create with her and what other stories she has to tell.

The East Wind Challenge #59 ~ Photo Inspiration

Hello everyone. There is a new challenge beginning today on The East Wind Challenge Blog and we thought we would try something a little different (for us) and make this a Photo Inspiration challenge. I will post the photo at the bottom of this post. When doing this kind of challenge, you can use anything that you notice, like, or that speaks to you from the inspiration photo. For me, it was the gorgeous sea colours, the stripes of the water, and the beachy feel.

I chose The East Wind image, Lucy Loo Midnight Mermaid, to star in my project. She was coloured with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils and fussy cut directly on the lines of her body and hair. I didn't leave my usual white border, nor did I mat with black. I also cut off the waves surrounding her in the image because I wanted to create my own. She was popped up on foam tape except for the very bottom edge.

The background was created with torn strips from five different papers or cardstock. They were torn in a curvy fashion with the white edge exposed so they looked like whitecaps Each piece was layered slightly overlapping the one above until the entire background was covered. A pre-printed saying was die cut and the colour of the lettering changed to black. Black Big Brush pen was used to outline the edges before it was adhered over the waves. Shell were cut from seashell themed paper, outlined with black, and then adhered overlapping the saying piece. Small flat pearls were clustered with the two lower shells.

The bottom left corner was also decorated with a small shell image, some pearls, and hemp twine which was looped and then tied together before glue was added. The top left corner was given a photo corner punched from the same deep blue paper as in the waves. More pearls were clustered below it to complete the visual triangle. Patina Stickles were added to the mermaid's outfit to add a little magic and shimmer. The outside edges of the page were lined with Black Big Brush pen before a black mat was added to frame the page.

Thanks for popping by today. Midnight Mermaid and I appreciate that! To see the amazing creations by the rest of the Blog DT for our Photo Inspiration Challenge, be sure to pop by The East Wind Blog. We would love to have you play along with us.

TEW Challenge #58 - Let 'er rip!

Hi everyone! Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadians! And  a Happy b-day to my husband! And Happy new challenge and freebie image to all The East Wind fans:) It's a happening day! The new challenge theme on The East Wind Challenge Blog is Let 'er rip! so we want to see torn edges or torn papers somewhere on your project. Easy peasy! Because it's the first challenge of the month, all of the DT have used the new freebie which comes in the newsletter to all subscribers. This little sweetie is called Teen Lucy Ukupunk and I love her to bits!

I coloured Lucy with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils and fussy cut her leaving a narrow white border around the image. She was then matted with black cardstock, trimmed out, and popped up on foam tape.

The background, a 6 x 8 inch rectangle of mixed media paper, was spritzed with Hag's Wart Orange, Hottie Patottie Hot Pink, and Yellow Rose of Texas Lindy's Stamp Gang Starburst Sprays plus a little water. A music note was stamped in several places using Magenta Hue Archival Ink and then outlined with black pen. Splatter dots were stamped using Jet Black Archival Ink. Two sizes of black die cut hearts were adhered around the page. To keep with the torn papers theme, Vintage music paper was torn into three sections and layered across the bottom to give Lucy a place to stand. These three pieces were also outlined with black pen.

The sentiment was printed onto white cardstock and the words were cut out individually. They were then matted with black cardstock and popped up on foam tape. A treble clef brad was added to the top right corner to further the music theme. Instead of cutting straight edges for the black cardstock mat which was used to frame the page, the edges were torn to follow the Let 'er rip theme.

Thanks for popping by today. To see the other wonderful DT projects created with this sweet July newsletter image, be sure and stop by The East Wind blog. We would love to have you play along with us. And if you aren't already a subscriber to The East Wind newsletter, you can sign up for that while you are visiting the blog.

The East Wind Challenge #57 ~ You Da Man

Hi everyone! We have a new challenge beginning today at The East Wind Challenge blog.. Our theme this time is You Da Man! so we want to see masculine themed cards...suitable for a boy or a man. I always find these make my wee brain work extra hard for some reason. For my DT inspiration project, I chose to feature The East Wind image called Lucy Loo Lucy Style

I coloured Lucy with a mix of Prismacolor and Polychromos pencils. As usual, I kept the colours very intense, my favourite style. Lucy Loo was fussy cut rright on the outside lines rather than leaving a narrow white border as I usually do. I did adhere the image to black cardstock and fussy cut again leaving the black border which helps her stand out against the background. She was then popped up on foam tape to add dimension and shadow.

The background began with a 4 x 5 1/8 inch rectangle of green cardstock with white dots. One of the Stampendous Mish Mesh stamps and Joggles/Margaret Applin Vintage Correspondence Stamp were applied to the background using Fern Green Archival Ink. A segment of a flags border was adhered to the left side and Lucy Loo to the right side. Three sizes of die cut stars were matted with black and adhered to the top right corner. The sentiment was computer generated and printed on white cardstock. The words were cut apart and matted with black cardstock before being popped up on foam tape. To finish, the background was matted on black cardstock and adhered to a white card base.

Thanks so much for popping by today. Lucy Loo and I appreciate that. To see the other fabulous DT inspiration projects for this You Da Man! Challenge, be sure to stop by The East Wind Challenge blog. We would love to have you play along with us and create a masculine themes project. Check out Unky's images at The East Wind shop...you're sure to find inspiration.
