Comic Con Poster for Dinosaur Revolution

Formerly "Reign of the Dinosaurs". I don't know why they changed the name, but here is the promotional poster for Comic Con featuring a stylized picture of our "Bad Boy" T Rex.

If anyone is going, let me know how you liked what they are showing. Which should be some final work for the show:)

Lambeosaurus Model

Hey there! :)

Here's a Lambeosaurus I just finished. I'm not the greatest at Lighting and Rendering. I'm pretty much just a modeler and texture painter, but hopefully it passes as nice.

I had fun with the color pattern as always. Its a mix of bird and mammal coloration. I love patterns that are unique...no grey and black stripes:)

Anyway, I need to render out the Olorotitan and need to get this Lambeo up on Shapeways. Both models should be released this week from SW.

Have a great week!

More half finished things...

These are the things I have going at the moment, along with the Steggie painting I'm almost done with. The Reign dinos have kept me busy the last couple weeks, so I put my stuff aside while I work on them. I thought I would just post the WIPs anyway, so I don't neglect the blog for to long.

I'm almost there with the color map for the Olorotitan. Alas, I missed the Hadrosaur Gallery for Art Evolved as I got so distracted, but maybe I can still put him in it when he is done:)

So, the two new paintings I haven't decided on the creatures yet, I'm just playing with shapes. The next PT I think needs Tenontos, so maybe the forest painting will get one of those. Now it just has some random Iguanodon type thing in there to play with shape and angle of the dinosaur. The other one I just sketched in something to see what the pose would look like. It turned into something feathery. Not sure what dino it should be yet.

Anyway, that's what I've been up too;)

Lots a Spots...Olorotitan update

It's a lotta spots to paint, but that's cool. Spotted dinosaurs are fun!

I'm another day into painting him and already thinking about a pattern for the Parasaurolophus and Lambeosaurus I plan on sculpting next.

I also want to do something that is not a dinosaur. I do love the Gorgonopsids. Maybe I will try one of those at some point.

Anyway, another update showing this Olorotitan's progress. More soon:)

Painting the Olorotitan model

I've gotten around to my favorite part of this process...texturing:) Right now I'm just blocking in color and pattern, later he will need other maps to make him realistic and tie it all together.

I prefer dinosaurs that are colored boldly. I love coming up with different designs for the animals and because nature is bold and colorful (and drab too) anything is plausible. That's the fun of it, this animal really existed, but I still get to make up things like color. Plus, I like them to be different than what everyone is used to seeing. Grey dinosaurs are so last year:)

I still have a long way to go, more later...

Detailing the Olorotitan and other WIPs

I've been at work detailing this model. This Olorotitan is an older, adult bull. He's been around the block a few times and is no pushover. So he has the bite marks and scars to proove it. I'm going to move on to making the other maps for him and add details as I go along, but this is where I am at.

Also still working on my Stegosaur painting. I still have a long way to go, but its heading in the right direction. I'm blocking in the steg, getting his pattern and colors the way I want them before I tie him in with the background. Right now he stands out way to much.

More updates soon...

Olorotitan detailing

Now that I have the base mesh done, I'm starting to add details like scutes, scratches and will also get some scales on there asap. Then I get to paint him! My favorite part:)

Hadrosaurs...the most beautiful of dinosaurs

At least to me. Everyone who knows me knows that I love these things. It pains me to always see them portrayed running in fear, falling over dying at the mere roar of a predator, always colored a dull grey. Always...boring. Just meat for those cool Tyrannosaurs.

I imagine them as very graceful, beautiful creatures. The males may well have been fantastically colored. Brilliant shades of everything to attract females or to show off to a predator that he was a healthy adult bull perfectly capable of defending himself and his herd.

And so I can't stop drawing these color keys. These are just simple sketches meant to try out different variations on color for my 3D models. So just getting my ideas out before I finish my models.

Let grey, boring Hadrosaurs be no more;)

Reign of the Dinosaurs clip

The production comany I worked for on Reign posted some clips of the dinosaurs on their show reel. They want everyone to see it and go crazy:) So go see the dinosaurs! You get 3 of them to drool over;) Its on the show reel under "our stuff" about half way thru. Enjoy! http://www.creatvdiff.com/

Olorotitan WIP

Started to refine the model even more. Now I'm paying attention to the skull, the crest and the general anatomy. I'm adding in more folds of skin and trying to get the base mesh most of the way there before starting the scales and fine details.

Olorotitan WIP

I have some time this weekend to get more done on my Hadrosaur model. I'm adding muscle definition, fleshing in the frill and giving some flare and personality to that crest. I want a proud, beautiful Hadrosaur! No monsters here.

I'll be back with more updates soon. Thanks for following my progress!

Olorotitan WIP

Got to work on this a little more after work tonight. I've added more muscle definition and have started sculpting in the main wrinkles. With wrinkles, you always want to punch them a little more than you think you should because when you start adding details like scales it will wipe it out.

I need to work more of the crest and face and get to some other things before I start the other details, but he is getting there;)

One more update

Thought I would finish up tonight with one more update on this guy. I've been sculpting the rear muscles on the legs and such, adjusted the frill to look interesting and did more minor tweaks.

I still have some more to go on the base model before I start all the cool stuff. Anyway, why am I always sculpting hadrosaurs? LOL! I guess because they are the best dinosaurs;)

Have a good night

Olorotitan Updates

I've been back at sculpting this Olorotitan model. Its still early in the game, but you can see some difinition in the thing.

I've got the overall shape of the animal down, remembering to have the palms of the hands face inward (dinosaurs did not have hands that were in that "bunny rabbit" position as so commonly restored...even in my old models!!! Yikes!!!)

I've started fleshing out some of the anatomy on the head, neck and front legs. The rear half still has yet to be sculpted.

I'm trying to figure out that beautiful crest. At this stage I will try and find as many skeleton refs as I can to help me.

So here he is so far. Once I've finished fleshing out the base model with the muscles and form, I will move on to the smaller details...the wrinkles, scales and scratches... Its always important to have a character for the animal, not just a generic "dinosaur". I've learned that at work and it has helped me grow as a paleoartist.

After that comes my favorite part...the colors!!! I can't wait to paint him with all those spots!!!

Follow along for more updates soon. Thanks everyone for all your kind comments and of course you are more than welcome to chime in if you see something incorrect. Its how we all learn;)

Later!

Color Design

While I've been on the project "Reign of the Dinosaurs" I've had the opportunity to create a lot of color designs and found that I really love painting interesting patterns for dinosaurs.

This is something I've done for a dinosaur I am making for my own portfolio (its not for Reign). I love hadrosaurs and have chosen the beautiful species Orolotitan to model and paint.

I went with some nice color pattern to accent the head, possibly this is a male and his colors are meant for display purposes. He also has a piebald spotted pattern for the rest of him. Something I've noticed lacking in a lot of dinosaur design is spotted and piebald patterning. Many people like to use vertical stripes on their dinosaurs so I figured this would be a unique take on dinosaur color.

I'll be trying to model this guy and paint him soon:) Enjoy!

Reign of the Dinosaurs

Do you like dinosaurs? Of course you do. Because they are that awesome!

I've been lucky enough to be a VFX artist onboard this fantastic upcoming Discovery mini-series for about a year now. I'm having a great time modeling and painting dinosaurs all day long:) And working with great people too!

So if you love dinosaurs, or even just a great adventure you will love "Reign". Watch for it this year, dinosaurs are so awesome!

:)
