5 Mythical Creatures that could have Actually Existed

For those of us who love played video games or are into sci-fi and fantasy, mythical creatures are a big part of our daily lives. Although these creatures sound like some writer just made them up, a number of these animals are actually based on real-life animals that existed or still exist.

Here are mythical creatures and the real animals that inspired them.

Dragon

Dragon
Other than dinosaurs, another inspiration for these feared creatures could be the Megalania. This is a giant lizard which is closely related to the Komodo dragon, one of the biggest reptiles alive today. They grew to about 26 feet in length and weighed at 4300 pounds. Although they didn’t breath fire, their saliva was very poisonous and could kill large animals in a number of hours.

Emela-Ntouka
Emela-Ntouka
This is a creature that originated in Central Africa. It’s described as a big animal that has a tusk on its snout and a long tail. Its name simply translates to elephant killer, because it’s said that this creature takes down and kills elephants. The profile of this animal fits a rhino, except for the tail. And since rhinos are known to be very aggressive, it’s possible that one can take an elephant down.

Dire Wolves
Dire Wolves
Like the wolves featured in the popular TV show Game of Thrones, dire wolves are projected as giant, powerful fearsome wolves. Real dire wolves existed during the Rancholabrean age, which was 240,000 to 11,000 years ago. These wolves were about the size of gray wolf, only they had a heavier build. It’s believed that the dire wolves are the major competitor over prey with the saber tooth tiger.

Kraken
Kraken
This legendary sea monster is said to be able to take down fleets of boats. The kraken fits the description of the rare giant squid, which lives in the deepest parts of the ocean. A giant squid was even recently capture near the coast of japan which measured 46 feet long and had hooks in its suckers. If a giant squid can take down a whale, a boat sounds pretty easy.

Imoogi
Imoogi
Also known as the Korean dragon, the Imoogi is described as a giant snake-like creature. The closest real creature to this description is the Titanoboa. This is the biggest, heaviest and longest snake, which is said to have died out 10 million years after the dinosaurs became extinct. A real life replica of this snake was even presented in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal. It was 49 feet long and weighed in at 1,135-kilograms.

6 Mythical Creatures and Possible Animals they were Based On

Myths and legends are often based on real things or events that people can’t really explain. For mythical creatures, they’re often animals that people don’t often see in the area or have very little knowledge about. Every culture has their own mythical creature that they often relate to the divine or enchanted. Below are a few common mythical creatures and the possible real animals that they’re likely based from.

Dragon
Dragon legends are found all over the world. It’s not really difficult to trace back where the legend started. When ancient people found fossils of dinosaurs, they could have naturally concluded that these creatures were gigantic reptilian monsters. Large snakes and giant lizards fuel the description of these animals. Stories about Nile crocodiles and komodo dragons could have made it all the way to Europe. Some anthropologist looks at dragons as the collection of all human nightmares. Humans and other primates instinctively have fears for snakes. Hence the creation of the dragon mythos could have been something based on our deepest fears.

Unicorns
Known through ancient Europe and some parts of Asia, unicorns are magical horses that have a single horn which is said to have magical healing powers. Although no one really knows where this myth originates, it’s possible that this creature is based on the extinct one-horned hooved animal, the Elasmotherium. It’s also possible that the legend is based on mutant, single horned dears, antelopes and even goats. Since many believed on its horn’s magical powers, merchants often passed Narwhal horns as unicorn horns and sold them.

Griffins
A common figure in ancient Greece, these animals is said to have the wings and head of an eagle and the body of a lion. Griffins are often used to symbolize bravery and wisdom, as well as nobility. The possible creation of this creature could be resulted from early storytellers combining features of existing animals. However, it is also possible that ancient excavators found fossils of a protoceratops and the legend was born.

Cyclops
Like griffins and dragons, the Cyclops could also have been inspired by the discovery of bones. A theory suggested that these one-eyed giant monsters from Greek mythology could have been based on the skulls of the extinct dwarf elephant. Since elephant trunks don’t really have any bones in them, ancient people would have concluded that the hole in the middle of the skull once housed a single eye. The skull’s size fits the description of the giant humanoid’s head perfectly.

Sea Monsters
The ocean has always been a fascinating and mysterious place. We’ve only explored a small percent of it, and we’re still discovering new animals in the depts. The simplest basis to this these myths are the giant squids which occasionally do get washed up on shore. Also, there’s the oarfish which can grow to around 56 feet, making it a good example of a real sea serpent. Giant fishes and whales may also be the source of these fishermen tales.

Mermaids
Another deep-sea tale, these half-person, half-fish creatures are known all over the world and have been traced back as far as 1,000 BC. Many sailors reported to have seen these creatures, and stories say that they would lure you into your death with their beautiful voices.  Historians believed that the sailors weren’t making up stories, but what they saw were aquatic animals that looked like mermaids. Dugongs, sea lions, seals and manatees are potential sources to this myth.

Dragons

Stories about dragons have been around for the longest time. Nearly all cultures have their own take on this mythical beast, leading scientists to search for the closest living animals they think old civilizations based the dragon legend on. Thanks to technology however, dragons have come to life through computer-generated imagery and animation in movies.
Dragon picture
A recent movie that featured dragons is Eragon, a film based on the book of the same name. Set during medieval times in a fictional universe, the movie revolves around a farm boy named Eragon and Saphira, a dragon that he discovers. An evil king, a former dragonrider, wants to capture the dragon and sends his men after Eragon and Saphira, who are forced to flee and look for a band of rebels called the Varden to ask their help to take the king down.

The word dragon means giant serpent. In many stories, dragons are described as huge, scaly creatures that breathe fire and have wings. In Europe, dragons are romanticized as terrible creatures that terrorize villages. In China on the other hand, they describe the dragons as serpent-like creatures that fly and possess magical powers.

Different cultures however, may regard dragons differently, but they still garner a sense of respect and admiration. In Europe, dragons were a symbol of strength and courage, and are used as a sign of royalty. The Chinese use the dragon as a symbol of luck and prosperity, saying that people who are born on the year of the dragon naturally have good fortune.

Many have related these animals to dinosaurs, after all, dragons and dinosaurs both have very similar physical descriptions. The closest we can get to see a real life dragon is through large reptiles, especially the saltwater crocodiles and Komodo dragons. These animals resemble the dragon very closely with their scales and big sizes.
