minnesota Morning

We just had the fun of spending a few days in Minnesota with our daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren, Erik and Amelia. Miss Mia just celebrated her first birthday, so a good time was had by all. Their part of MN isn't that of 10,000 lakes so much, but more 10,000 cornfields, things are lovely, lush and green in June, the perfect backdrop for the beautiful quilts our daughter created for her children.

scenes of the harvest in the Heartland

Spending Thanksgiving with our daughter and her family in southwestern Minnesota, heart of corn and soybean country, the every day scenes are very different from out our back door in southwestern South Dakota, 7 hours to the west. This neighbor spent all of Saturday and part of Sunday harvesting the seed corn off his fields. The combine made pass after pass through the standing stalks, offloading into a grain cart surprisingly often, the yield off this field was a good one. As he worked the 200 acre field, the resident pheasants and the white tailed deer who take advantage of his "hospitality" were flushed out and headed for safer parts of the hedgerows and groves near by.

not just in your Hair

If you have ever been on a cruise to the Caribbean, every port of call has nimble fingered ladies who will do cornrows and braids in your hair as a souvenir of your trip. Those folks are no more the artist than my son-in-law's family is with their huge farm machines when they plant out their real corn rows on southwestern Minnesota fields!
