Retreat at My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe - Ahhhmazing!

Last month the Ogden NG and some of our favorite members from down south got together for a retreat in Logan, held at the “Attic” in My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe

Some girls came early, some came late, some stayed all day - all had a blast sewing, shopping, eating and just hanging out. The Attic retreat center and adjacent store really are a wonderful place to spend a Saturday, both are full of amazing displays and inspiration and the creative atmosphere is undeniable!

The shop owners Kris and Mike were gracious hosts providing everything from drinks to personal ironing boards and waste baskets. Kris treated us with a fun make & take project so everyone went home with a charming pincushion, and armed with the knowledge to make more!

You can check out this video on their blog for the full tutorial.

In addition to a whopping discount in the quilt shop each attendee received a sweet little tote bag to carry all that new fabric home.

I'm sorry I don't have any pictures of happy girls sewing and hanging out, I got so caught up in having a good time I didn't even break my camera out the whole day!

I guess you'll just have to believe me when I say everyone agreed the retreat was worth the drive, and we can’t wait to come back next spring!

Tell us! What have you done for fun this summer?

Fabric Origami Kimono Tutorial

At one of our recent Ogden NG meeting Jackie taught us an origami technique to make little fabric kimonos!
Below I've posted a step by step tutorial so you can make one (or two, or three...) yourself! Super quick and easy - they are a minimal effort/major reward project. Great stash buster!

Fabric Origami Kimono Tutorial

All seam allowances 1/4 inch
Cut fabric:
(1) 16 x 9 main fabric (for body)
(1) 16 x 9 contrasting fabric (for sleeves)
(2)  2 x 9 strips from 3rd fabric (for collar)

body fabric + lapel strip

sleeve fabric + collar strip

With Right Sides Together sew 1 collar strip to each of the larger fabric squares. Press seams.

Sew fabrics RST. Leave an opening at the bottom for turning.

Turn right side out and press. Slip stitch opening closed.

With "sleeve" fabric side up fold collar in half and press.
(* fold towards the fabric that you want to be the sleeves)

Turn fabric over, "body" fabric side up. Fold bottom up 3 1/2 inches. Press.

Turn over again, "sleeve" fabric side up. Bring folded bottom edge up to the collar seam and press.

Fold in half to find center, press lightly

Measure 3/8 inch from center crease on one side

Fold down top corner to 3/8 inch mark. Press.

Repeat on other side.

Fold outer edge in to meet lapel edge. Repeat on other side.

Tuck edges under collar

Slide your finger into the "sleeve" and tug outwards slightly.

Adjust as necessary. Press.

Add beads, charms or buttons to embellish the lapel.

If your making a quilted wall hanging,
you'll want to mount your Kimono on the quilted background for stability.
Use either fabric glue or using a slip stitch.

Have fun!
If you do make one be sure to link to it in the comments section!

Join Us For Make a Difference Day!

You can make a difference for abused children.
Saturday is Make a Difference Day, a national day of helping others.
If you live in the Ogden area, I hope you will consider joining the Ogden NG as we gather at the Newgate Mall to make quilts for the Childrens Justice Center. These quilts are given to children for comfort while they are interviewed and given medical examines, and they are then theirs to keep.

Tamra has been heading this up for around ten years! Thank you Tamra, for getting us involved in such a worthwhile and local cause.
Please check out  The Childrens Justice Center website for more information on how they make a difference everyday in the lives of abused children.

Please. If you can, just stop by, it doesn't cost a thing except a few moments of your time.
