jan...

with val and her friend xiong qi who brought us around =)
at the start of the marathon
happy new year to all! okay finally have some time to do yet another quick update. its been pretty hectic these days. the photos posted are just snipets of my xiament trip in december over to new year, where i spent a week there. i would say this trip has changed some of my perspective of china (some of you guys would know that i had a very bad experience when i went there years ago and this had put me off to travelling there ever since). its the cleaniest city in china, and its definitely less populated than the other cities. given that there are a few tertiary institutes there, it kind of reminded me of lund, whereby it is like a student town. nevertheless, the city is a good mix of the old with the new, given that xiamen is actually developing quickly as well with its port being opened up many years ago. a good trip i would say, with my first (overseas) 10km marathon completed. given that i was severely sick just a week before the trip where i had phelgm in my lungs and having to resort to the use of nebuliser at the clinic for three continuous days, i ran 2km and walked the 8km (when the doctor advised no exercise at all, and i was on medication). was comtemplating whether to go at all. but glad i did. the atmosphere was superb with the supporters lined up ALL THE WAY cheering all the people on. some even provided food along the way! its a major event in xiamen every year, and im glad to be part of it, though i did get a bad timing with all the walking, but at least i took a lot of photos along the way. running in 10degree was also another new thing for me, and trust me its really nice! the dry weather actually does not make you pant that much, just that you have to run in track pants to keep warm enough. i finished in around 2 hours, which is the average timing generally for the 10km people. its more like a walkathon for me. hopefully the other races in SG this year i can at least finish in better timing. =)
school started for a week and im exhausted already. with all the TA sessions this year, im going to be completing 110/120 hours! 2 modules cum marking. cum i have 3 heavy modules this sem. that probably explain why i am so tired and stressed. plus i have my own work to start and im still on literature searches. and boss just give me a piece of news which i had mixed feelings about: he's going to send me over to japan for a 4 month attachment in december for a collaboration with this uprising jap female prof who is the youngest associate prof around. first sending me to IMRE and now an overseas attachment. how wonderful. going to jap is great and the place is at IMS, near nagoya, and how often i get to work with foreign scientists. but im worried about the hectic work ethic there, as well as the language barrier and yet another time off from SG again. i was pretty sure from my exchange that i really prefered staying in SG, so i wonder this 4 mths would be gd for me. and this also means that my plans for dec trip for another marathon might be put off, and when i come back probably val would have left for london already, which means i cant sent her off also. =| lets see how this turns out, and whether its going to burn a big hole in my pocket.
okay enough of rumblings. till another time then!
