Picasso's Rooster Art Project

Grade 4 students made these funky roosters inspired by Pablo Picasso's
pastel drawing of a rooster, seen below.

"Le Coq", 1938

I was inspired by the post found HERE on the blog "A Glimmer of Light".

We used construction paper crayons on brown construction paper. Afterwards, I decided that oil pastels would be more effective as they are much brighter. Construction paper crayons tend to be very subdued.

This is a great lesson in teaching expressive use of colour and line and creating mood in an artwork.

Cubist Oil Pastel Portraits

The classic Picasso Cubist portrait lesson!

I introduced Grade 5 students to Picasso's colorful Cubist portraits. We discussed the style and elements in his works. They did a practice sketch then drew their good copy on black construction paper.

Then they were coloured using oil pastels.
Students were encouraged to mix and layers colours.

Cubist Style Watercolour Paintings

This is a beautiful Cubist inspired watercolour project that my high school class completed last year.
I posted all the steps previously HERE.

They had to pick a theme and then draw a few objects related to that theme on watercolour paper/ Then they fracture the whole picture using a ruler. Within each section, they paint a gradation.

Fractured Cubist Oil Pastel Drawings

Here's a colourful project good for teaching analytical Cubism. To be honest my students (Grade 7-9) don't love this project so I've put it on the back-burner for now. There's alot of steps involved and you don't see the real quality until close to the end of the process. Also, my students just hate oil pastels in general! haha

I posted all the steps previously HERE.
