The ICZL(u)C
So this past weekend I got to attend the Iowa City Zine Librarian (un)Conference. It was a pretty awesome experience. I got to meet a bunch of librarians who deal with zines in their collections, participate in some great discussions, and volunteer to do more work. Yay! (Wait, more work? Yay?)
If you didn't get to attend there should be notes on each of the sessions up on the wiki (check the schedule page), and there are youtube channels with recordings of at least some of goings on too.
One of the things we decided on doing was putting more content on zinelibraries.info, so hopefully in the next few months you'll start to see photo tours of zine collections, zine reading lists on various topics, and more. Awesome!
I can't wait until the one next year. Hopefully I'll be able to attend!

July is International Zine Month!
Did you know that July is International Zine Month? It is! You should check out the website and the facebook page to find out the full list of events, but here are some that I'm excited about!
July 2nd: Make a Top 10 list of reasons why your love zines, post them online if you would like.
(We're going to be doing this at the Zine Pavilion at the ALA conference in Chicago!)
July 13th: Zine Trade Day! Ask someone if they would like to trade zines with you.
(I'm totally going to do this at the Iowa City Zine Librarian (un)Conference!)
July 15th: Leave a zine in public for someone else to find.
(I do this all the time at the #UBCnoox!)
July 17th: Review a zine online or write a review of a zine to add to your zine.
(Okay, well this one is kind of obvious...)
July 27th: Organize a zine event! A zine reading or a zine fair or fest or even just for friends to get together and work on their zines.
(I think I'll be in Toronto on this date, and I'd love to go to a zine event! Does anyone know of any happening there?)
I'm also totally going to make a 24 hour zine at some point during the month. Exciting!

Donate your zines to the Zine Pavilion at the ALA conference!
I'm one of the people helping with the Zine Pavilion at the American Library Association conference in Chicago from June 27th to July 2nd.
You should check out the Zine Pavilion Tumblr which has lots of photos from last year's pavilion. That's also where we'll be releasing the schedule of readings and other zine events happening during the conference.
If you are interested in donating some zines to the pavilion please send them to:

I just got an email from some people who are the zine coordinators at the Usurp Gallery in London.
They're looking for zines to be sold on consignment at the gallery, and are organizing a zine fair in a few months.
If you're interested, you can check out their website at usurpzines.tumblr.com or take a look at their flyer below.

Brighton Zinefest!
Wooooooaaaaaah!
This weekend is the Brighton Zinefest in Brighton England! Hurray! Are you going? I am! I'm heading down there later today, and will be around tomorrow for the workshops on Saturday and the main event on Sunday!
I'll be wandering around with many of my zines, so if you want to trade me for one (or even buy one!) let me know. I'm apparently going to be spending some time volunteering at the communal table and front table on Sunday, but I'll probably be around all day. I'm not so sure about Saturday, but I'll be somewhere in Brighton at least!
Anyway, I hope you guys can make it!
PS. This is what I look like in case you wanted to find me for some reason.

Alternative Press Fair!
Guess what! I suck! I went to the Alternative Press Fair over a week ago and still haven't posted my photos! Gah!
Hell, even worse, I uploaded them days ago and just haven't made this post. : (
Anyway, Jimi Gherkin invited me to come down for it when I saw him at the Birmingham Zine Festival. I was up for it, and some friends of mine from Canada were over and they planned to be in London that weekend so I got to meet up with them too. Hurray!
I helped work at the "everybody" table (which had another name, but I can't remember what). I met some nice people, traded a bunch of my zines, and sold a bunch of other people's (and even one of mine!). I sadly didn't get to talk to as many people as I'd hoped (sometimes tabling sucks). Still! I had a totally awesome time anyway.
They also announced that they're currently planning the first International Alternative Press Festival in London next year. The festival will be held over the final weekend in May (27th-29th), and will feature parties, the alternative press festival, workshops, performances, and lots of other stuff!
So if you're an artist, zinemaker, printer, publisher, art gallery, or anything else crative you should definitely get in touch with them. You can also keep an eye on their blog. Hopefully I'll see you there! I can't wait!
(Unrelated but interesting: An article on the Japanese zine scene.)
And now the photos! (Click for bigger.) I love all the terrible decorations that were hanging up at the venue.

Tales From The First 5 Years
By The London Zine Symposium
www.lasthours.org.uk
"This isn't a zine!" the voices in my head loudly proclaim. "It has a spine! And we all know how spineless zines are."
But the introduction says that it's a zine, and I'm guessing they just ended up with more content than they anticipated and so got it bound into a nice little book, instead of something with staples. Oh no! I shall review it anyway.
This is a collection of writings, reminiscences, and ephemera from the first five London Zine Symposiums, created to be sold at the 6th symposium earlier this year.
There's some pretty neat stuff in here, and it's probably worth reading even if you've never been to the London Symposium, as the information about how the event was started could be incredibly useful to anyone who is interested in creating their own event (hint: just say you're going to do it, and rope other people in to helping you).
Edd Baldry (who does Hey Monkey Riot), writes a text introduction, then does a much longer (22 pages!) comic about how the event was started, and how it's grown over the years. The comic's setting is kind of bizarre, in that it's an alternative reality talk show. What I find weirdest about this is that Baldry has choosen to draw his characters just sitting and talking about previous events instead of showing them to us. I'll admit that the comic is probably more interesting to read than a just straight up account of what happened, but I really do feel that comics should try to stick to the "show don't tell" rule. Mentioning that the first several symposiums happened in squats, then just drawing people sitting around in a TV studio seems kind of strange. There is one actual event shown as it happened, and it's much more interesting in that you can actually see what was going on.
After that we have reprints of the posters from the first five years, and lists of who showed up to table, and what workshops and other events happened. It's neat to see how the event grew and changed over several years, and could be a useful resource for someone looking for people to invite or things to do at their own event.
Then there's a number of pieces from other people about their own memories of the previous symposiums. Some of these are informal emails, others are comics, and Isy Morgenmuffel's includes a falafel recipe! Yum!
Overall it's interesting to see what people remember from past years, and to try and figure out how the event will grow and change in the future. Hopefully it'll continue for another five years!
