That's a Wrap!

Happy New Year! Even though I'll probably finish another book today, I'm going to go ahead and compile my reading stats for the year. That way, I can refresh my blog today and be all ready to jump into 2024 tomorrow. Woo hoo!

2023 has been a great reading year for me, at least in that I've read more books than I ever have before. I'm not sure how many truly fantastic books I've experienced in 2024. Still, I enjoyed my reading for the most part. I discovered new authors, found hidden treasures, acted as a judge for three different book awards, headed up a fun book club, etc. So, yeah, it's been a successful reading year for me. Let's see what the numbers say:

I've read 223 books this year, which is 23 more than last year. Go, me.

To no one's surprise, I once again read way more fiction than nonfiction, with 198 of the former and 25 of the latter:

This next breakdown isn't too surprising either, considering it's stayed pretty consistent over the last several years. I read children's books (middle grade and YA) for book awards judging and only occasionally otherwise.

You know how I mentioned needing to put myself on a book buying ban in 2024? Here's a look at why. The books I read this year came from the following sources:

I'm patting myself on the back for making good use of my city and county library systems, but I REALLY need to use my own personal library instead of just adding to it!

Here's how the genres broke down. No surprise that mysteries/thrillers dominated (this includes historical mysteries, which I didn't count for the hist fic genre):

I couldn't get this pie chart right, but here's how the genres broke down:

Mystery/Thriller    70 books (31.4%)
Historical Fiction    32 books (14.3 %)
General Fiction        65 books (29.1%)
Sci Fi/Fantasy         17 books (7.6 %)
Romance                  7 books (3.2 %)
Supernatural/Horror    2 books (approx. 1%)
Dystopian                    2 books (approx. 1%)
Poetry                        1 book (approx. .5%)
General Nonfiction    10 books (4.5%)
Historical Nonfiction    7 books (3.1 %)
Biography/Memoir        10 books (4.5%)

Lastly, I always keep track of the settings of the books I read. This year, I "visited" all 50 U.S. states, plus D.C., in my reading. The Top 5 states I stopped in were:

1. California (23 books)
2. New York (17 books)
3. Washington (6 books)
4. Tie—Maine, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Vermont (5 books each)
5. Tie—Michigan, Ohio, Texas (4 books each)

I also did some international reading. The Top 5 countries I visited were:

1. England (25 books)
2. Canada (10 books)
3. Scotland (4 books)
4. Tie—Ireland and Australia (3 books each)
5. Tie—France and The Netherlands (2 books each)

How about you? How did your 2023 reading year go?

Goodbye, 2022. Hello, 2023!

Even though there's still, technically, another day of reading left in 2022, I'm going to call it for the year. Looking back on it, I'd say I've had an average reading year. I've read some great books, lots of so-so ones, and a couple of real stinkers. I wasn't sure I was going to make my Goodreads reading goal this year, but lookee here:

I did it! By slogging through Dakota Born by Debbie Macomber yesterday, I even managed to finish reading a book set in every U.S. state. Plus seventeen other countries. Not too shabby.

So, how did my reading break down this year? Let's see:

Total Books Read: 200—This is three fewer than last year, but ten more than in 2020.

Number of fiction books read: 188 (94%)—I've always been more about fiction than non-, but I have been increasing the number of non-fiction I read incrementally over the years. Last year, I was at 95% fiction, so a slight improvement this year.

Number of non-fiction books read: 12 (6%)—I enjoyed the non-fiction I read a lot this year, so I'll definitely make an effort to up this number for 2023.

Number of adult books read: 112 (56%)—I continue to read mostly books targeted at adults, but I also read a bunch of middle grade this year because of the two book awards programs that I've been involved in helping to judge. I'm not sure I'm going to take them both on next year, so this number may increase in 2023.

Number of YA books read: 17 (8%)—YA used to be a genre I read quite a lot. Not anymore. I do like all the YA mystery/thrillers that are being published these days, so I'll probably read a handful of those in 2023 as well.

Number of MG books read: 71 (36%)—Middle grade continues to be a favorite genre of mine. Even if I don't do as much book award judging in 2023, I'll still read a fair amount of these. Better and better books are being published in this genre every year!

Number of books by female authors: 172 (86%)—I've always tended to read mostly female authors and this has not changed, apparently.

Number of books by male authors: 25 (13%)—To make this number even more pathetic, 3 of these books were written by the same man. What can I say? I discovered the great Jason Reynolds this year!

Number of books written by a combination of authors, mixed genders: 3 (1%)

Books read, by genre:

General Fiction: 69

Mysteries and Thrillers (contemporary and historical): 66

Historical Fiction: 29

Sci-Fi/Dystopian: 9

Fantasy: 7

Supernatural/Horror: 5

Biographies/Memoirs: 5

Historical Non-Fiction: 5

Romance: 2

General Non-Fiction: 1

Self-Help: 2

No surprises here, really. I've always tended to read mostly mysteries, thrillers, and historical fiction. The General Fiction majority is probably due to all the middle-grade novels I read, most of which were contemporary stories. I'm a titch surprised there aren't more supernatural/ghost stories here, but since I counted Gothic novels (sans ghosts) as general fiction, so I guess that makes sense.

Based on these stats, I'd say that—surprise, surprise—I read pretty much the same thing every year! I'm a creature of habit for sure. In 2023, I would like to up my non-fiction reading. I will also try again to read a book from every state and even more foreign countries. Once again, I'll set my Goodreads reading goal at 200 books. I'm nothing if not consistent. Ha!

As for blogging, I was absolute rubbish at writing reviews this year (except on Goodreads). I plan to do better in the new year. Not having to deal with a big house move in 2023 should help.

How did your reading year go?

For my records, here is a list of the books I read in 2022. Asterisks denote favorites.

Goodbye, 2021. Hello, 2022!

Happy New Year! I usually do this annual wrap-up/stats on January 1, but I want to have the blog all turned over and ready to go for 2022 before tomorrow, so...here we go. I had an excellent reading year, at least as far as numbers go. Let's see how it all broke down:

Total Books Read:  203—for the first time ever, I reached my goal of reading 200 books in a year. Yay! Last year, I read 191, so a definite improvement.

Number of fiction books read:  193 (95%)—I made a tiny bit more of an effort to read more non-fiction this year...

Number of non-fiction books read:  10 (5%)—I read two more non-fiction books than I did last year. Go, me!

Number of adult books read:  121 (60%)—As much as I love children's literature, the bulk of my reading is always in the adult category. This has remained very consistent over the years.

Number of YA books read:  21 (10%)—I'm reading fewer and fewer teen books every year, it seems.

Number of MG books read:  61 (30%)—Thanks to the Cybils Awards and another book award program I help judge most years, I read a lot of middle-grade novels.

Number of books by female authors:  177 (87%)—Another thing I remain very consistent on is reading mostly female authors. I guess it's mostly women writing in the genres I like?

Number of books by male authors:  26 (13%)—My percentage rate on this one is actually a teensy bit higher this year than last.

Number of books by male/female combo:  1 (.005%)

Number of books read, personal collection:  25 (12%)—Oops! I did not do a very good job in this category.

Number of books read, review copies:  52 (26%)—This percentage is down from last year.

Number of books read, borrowed from library:  126 (62%)—I love the library! Last year, 53% of my reads were from the library. I'm glad to see that this number has gone up.

Number of books read, paper:  141 (69%)—I'll always be a fan of "real" books!

Number of books read, electronic:  44 (22%)

Number of books read, audio:  18 (9%)—I only listened to 6 audiobooks last year. This year, I had one going all the time, hence the elevated number.

Number of reading challenges joined:  9

Number of reading challenges completed:  5

For my own records, I like to record the titles of the books I read every year. Here are my books for 2021 (asterisks denote favorites):
