Everything But the Kitchen Sink

So, I should be writing a review of Whistling in the Dark, but I've got so many other things swirling around in my head that I had to get them out. Here goes:

- Like you, I've been seeing tons of posts about CSN Stores. The company, which sells a huge variety of products - lighting, bookshelves, home decor, furniture, etc. has been tremendously generous to bloggers. I was slightly bummed that I hadn't been contacted by them ... and then, voila! I got an email offering me the chance to review one of their products. How ecstatic am I? Very ecstatic! CSN has such a variety - how am I ever going to choose a product? When I do, you'll be the first ones to know. Stay tuned for my review. In the meantime, click on over and check out all the goodies at CSN.

- Do you read O magazine? Even though I haven't watched her show in years, I still love me some Oprah. I don't take her book recommendations any more seriously than I do anyone else's, but I love the fact that she not only reads, but also works diligently to promote books. In the July 2010 issue of O, you'll find "Our Biggest, Best Summer Reading List Ever" (also available online by clicking here). Fun, no? It highlights titles I've seen all over the book blogosphere (The Passage by Justin Cronin, The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, My Name Is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira, etc.) as well as some I hadn't heard of (Elizabeth Street by Laura Fabiano, The Madonnas of Echo Park by Brando Skyhorse, What Is Left the Daughter by Howard Norman, etc.). I also loved "O's Declaration of Reader Independence." Hilarious.

- I finished a reading challenge! I know, right? It's about time. Carl is a wonderful challenge host, and I enjoyed participating in Once Upon A Time this year. I did cheat a teensy bit by changing one of the books I was planning to read - I swapped As You Wish by Jackson Pearce for Wish by Alexandra Bullen. Still, I finished a challenge. Yay!

- About bloggy awards ... I know people are getting fed up with them. My friend asked me if they were the new version of chain letters. Ha ha. I think they're a little more sincere than that! I have seen a couple of bloggers declaring their blogs "Award-Free Zones." I wouldn't ever do that, but I do reserve the right to pass awards on only when I have the time and energy. That being said, I really do appreciate your attention and kind words. It means a lot to me that you all enjoy your time here at BBB.

Kika, Laura and Alison all gave me The Versatile Blogger award. I've just recently discovered their wonderful blogs via The Book Blogger Hop. Getting to know new bloggers is always fun. Since I just recently passed this one on, I'm not going to do it again, but I will tell you 7 Things About Me:

1. I've never broken a bone. This is probably because I'm the biggest wuss on the planet.

2. Although I have been bungee jumping, thank you very much. My older brother owned a bungee jumping company when I was in high school, so my younger brother and I both jumped out of his hot air balloon. It was a rush.

3. I'm not very daring in the food department either, although a year spent in The Philippines as an exchange student did broaden my culinary horizons quite considerably. I've eaten delicacies like dog, pig's brain, monkey, goat and nimbalut (you don't want to know, trust me). Okay, the curious can read all about it here. It should be noted that these dishes are not eaten often by the average Filipino. They were prepared for me because I am a gullible American.

4. I cannot sneak up on people. I have weak ankles that pop constantly. This put me at a distinct disadvantage when dealing with three brothers.

5. The same brother who convinced me to jump out of a hot air balloon used to roll me up in blankets, cinch a belt around my waist and tickle my toes 'til I cried. I'm still traumatized.

6. Back to food - my husband thinks I'm weird because I like soft ice cream. Not machine-soft ice cream, but hard ice cream softened. I've been known to pop a carton in the microwave if it's too hard.

7. Phew! That was hard. I think I am officially the most boring person in the blogosphere!

- Hm, was that it? I swear there was something else I was going to tell you. Oh well. Happy Reading!

Roll Out the Red Carpet ...

... 'cause it's awards time. I'm sure you know by now that it's Book Blogger Appreciation Week. This is such a fun idea. Huge shout out to Amy and her crew for putting it all together. Congratulations to all the winners and to every book blogger out there - we have truly transformed the book reading universe. As I've said, my favorite part about BBAW is all the new blogs I find because of it - my Google reader is positively groaning under the weight of new feeds. It's so exciting to realize just how big the book blogosphere really is! Considering how many excellent book blogs are out there, it's a wonder mine gets any traffic at all, let alone earns prestigious bloggy awards :) Thanks so much for passing these on - receiving them just gives me the warm fuzzies. Who doesn't love recognition for their hard work?

First off, the lovely Chantele presented me with the Honest Scrap award. It's given to bloggers whose posts come "from the heart." I'm supposed to pass it on to 7 bloggers, then answer a little meme. Since I'm all about living dangerously (ha!), I'm going to do it in reverse order. So, without further ado, here are 10 Random Things About Me:

1. I was born in the middle of a snowstorm on my dad's 37th birthday. I've been a big daddy's girl ever since :)

2. Although I'm not a very adventurous eater (just ask my husband - I'm always the last one perusing the menu, even though I pretty much always order the same thing), I have sampled dog, monkey, pig's brain, alligator and a thing so disgusting I shudder every time I think about it - balut. If you really want to know what it is (you don't), click here at your own risk. And, remember, I told you not to look!

3. I like soft ice cream. Not soft as in from-the-machine-soft-serve, but like hard-ice-cream-softened. I've been known to stick ice cream in the microwave if it's not melting fast enough for me.

4. I always sing along to the radio/CD/iPod when I'm driving. You'll never catch me singing in public, though, unless it's with a very large group of people.

5. I can't stand sports.

6. My husband says that Nascar is the most spiritual sport (and thus appropriate for viewing on the Sabbath) because there's a prayer before every race. I contend that praying for the safety of people winging around a track at ridiculous rates of speed is absurd - if the drivers are doing something that stupid, they deserve every lump they get.

7. Once upon a time, I really was able to burp the ABCs.

8. I could eat custard-filled Krispy Kreme doughnuts, Reese's PB Cups and mashed potatoes for every meal. I'd wash it all down with Mt. Dew, of course. Mmmmm ...

9. I'm a cold weather creature. I love sweaters, blankets, fires crackling in the fireplace, snow, heavy comfort foods - yet I live in the desert. Go figure.

10. Although I come across as a "tell it like it is" person, I'm really the least acquiescent girl you'll ever meet.

But, enough about me. Let's talk about you. The 7 bloggers that came to mind for this award are:

Gaye from Inside a Book. She's one of my favorite bloggers because she's so nice. All of her posts come from her heart, and you can tell just by reading them what a kind, noble heart it is.

I just discovered Kristin's brand new blog, The Readers Chat. Probably because she has a son battling brain cancer, she wears her heart on her sleeve. This makes her reviews both poignant and moving. I can't wait to see her blog grow and develop.

Chris at Stuff As Dreams Are Made On. Not only does Chris blog about all the great sci fi/fantasy books he reads, but he's written about living through Hurricane Katrina, working in the mental health field, and lots of other things. His words definitely come straight from the heart.

Ari at Reading in Color. This high schooler writes passionately about something that's close to her heart - books about people of color. I love her sass, her confidence, and the fact that she willingly helped me out with a project that is so close to my own heart :)

Stephanie at The Written Word. I've "known" Stephanie for a while. When I announced my decision to adopt, she was one of the first to offer encouragement and advice. Like many of you, I've watched her battle cancer with strength and courage. And, oh yeah, she writes excellent reviews.

Laughing Stars at Stark Raving Bibliophile. This is one lady who's been making my day lately. I love her comments on my blogs as well as the reviews she posts on hers. She's a devoted mom and "unschooler," who's obviously passionate about what she does.

Cath at Read Warbler. Cath's another lady I've enjoyed reading for some time now. She always picks interesting books, about which she writes informative, intelligent reviews. I heart her, what can I say?

Mari gave me the Literary Blogger Award, which "acknowledges bloggers who energize & inspire reading by going the extra mile. These amazing bloggers make reading fun & enhance the delight of reading!" Thanks so much, Mari!

Here are the 3 bloggers I thought of for this one:

1. Katie at Katie's Literature Lounge. Maybe it's because she's a teacher, but Katie's one organized lady. I love her "Weekly Blog Plan" as well as the way she organizes her reviews. If you're an elementary school teacher, you're going to want to bookmark this valuable resource.

2. Jodie at Book Gazing just makes me laugh. She's chatty and friendly and fun. Reading her blog always gives me a lift and, of course, adds great books to my towering TBR mountain.

3. Sam at Book Chase. This is another blog I've been reading for a while. Sam writes a great book review, but I think what I love most about him is that he really stays on top of what is happening in the book/publishing industry. He finds interesting news items, gives his opinion and opens all kinds of issues up for discussion. I'd say that's "energiz[ing] and inspir[ing] reading by going the extra mile."

Thanks again for the awards. With the BBAW nomination and this bloggy love, I'm just flying high.

Roll Out the Red Carpet ...

... 'cause I snagged an award. The lovely Katie over at 101 Books in 1001 Days bestowed this on me:

Thanks so much, Katie. I'm constantly surprised that anyone even reads my blog, let alone gives me awards for my work. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Speaking of awards, did you know Book Blogger Appreciation Week is rolling around again? This is such a fun idea - I had a blast participating in it last year. Click over to the website for more info and to register. Also, stop by Amy's blog and thank her for hosting this great event.
---
In other news, summer's winding down here; in less than 3 weeks, the kids will be back in school. I've enjoyed our lazy days, but I'm excited to get back into a routine. Unfortunately, the weather's still wicked hot. We've had some crazy monsoon storms, complete with thunder, lighting, rain and strong winds. They wreak serious havoc (we had to pull a deck box out of the pool last night, plus a couple of our trees doubled over in the wind), but they're fun to watch.

I've been reading like crazy, even though my review pile never seems to grow any smaller. I'm not complaining - I have some great books waiting for me, I just can't seem to get to them all fast enough. I've got two books going right now - as soon as I finish them, I'll have some new reviews up. I'm also planning a fun Christmas in July post, complete with a gift for YOU, so stick around.

For those of you waiting for books you've won, thank you for your patience. I'm planning to mail them out tomorrow.

'Til then, Happy Reading!

Not So Brillante

I must have been really tired when I typed up my last post, because I forgot to mention the rules of the Brillante award. Recipients are supposed to give the award to 5 of their favorite blogs - as far as I can tell, they can be any kind of blogs. Leave a comment on the blog letting the author know they have received the award and encourage them to pass it on. That's it! I named the blogs I selected in my last post, but forgot to let them know. Duh. Sometimes, I'm not so brillante!

Anyway, have fun with it. I love being recognized for my efforts and being able to recognize others' hard work.

P.S. I am reading, I promise. Right now, I'm about halfway through Courage in Patience by Beth Fehlbaum. It's a raw novel about a young girl who has been molested by her stepfather. Not the cheeriest of subjects. I should finish it soon, then I'm going to have to choose between Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer and Devil Bones, Kathy Reichs' newest. Plus, I need to come up with interview questions for both Beth and Kirby Larson, read a couple review books and keep resisting the urge to join Carl's RIP III Challenge. So much to do, so very little time ...

August and Everything After (I LOVE That CD!)

So, wow, it's the last day of August. Where did the time go? It was a crazy busy month for me, with our big move, the kids starting school, and all kinds of other stuff. I tried not to neglect Ye Olde Blog, but it still happened a bit. Even now, after 3 weeks of packing, moving, and settling in, I've got lots of work to do. Anyway, there are just a few things I want to mention:

* I never thanked Debbi over at My Reading Spot for the Brilliante Weblog Award she left me on her site. It was so sweet of her! I'm always thrilled to receive praise from fellow readers and bloggers. Of course, now I have to pass it on, and that's the tough part - not because I don't have any favorite blogs, but because I have SO many. How can I possibly choose?

Two are going to my IRL friends, Tara and Jane. Both of them have fun mom blogs. Tara's is filled with great info on fashion, DIY projects, cooking and much, much more. Jane's contains more musings about marriage and family. Did I mention that she's hilarious? You should definitely check out their blogs for great reading and giveaways. I love 'em both!

Okay, book blogs ... Why do you all have to be so brilliant and entertaining? You make these things so difficult ... I'm going to go with these folks for now:

What KT Reads - KT is a fairly new book blogger, who reviews mostly YA fiction. She's always recommending great books.

Booking Mama - Julie P. is another new book blogger, but man, is she busy! I read a lot of review books, but she seems to do it faster and better than I can. I always read her blog to see what books she's managed to snag - I'm often green with envy over her fabulous "catches."

BestBooks - Julie Smith writes the funniest, most concise reviews ever. It's refreshing to get her perspective in just a few words. Her recent review of Breaking Dawn made me laugh out loud.

* Speaking of awards, I hope you're following the fun on My Friend Amy's blog. I love the idea of Book Blogger Appreciation Week. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline for nominations, but good luck everybody. Fabulous idea, Amy. I love it.

* You've probably noticed that I've been reading review books almost exclusively. That's because I'm often under deadline to finish them. I love review books, but I'm also itching to read some of the novels I've been neglecting. A couple of my favorite authors have come out with new books this month, so hopefully, I'll be getting to them soon. What can you look forward to this month on BBB? Lots of reviews, a couple of author interviews and at least one giveaway. So, definitely stay tuned.

* Okay, this last one is for my 9-year-old son. He has been hounding me about checking out a certain book from the library. The problem is, he's not sure of the title. His teacher read the book aloud to his class last year, then she retired, so I don't have her email address. So, I was hoping some of you teachers/librarians/readers can help us out. According to him, the book was about some boys who race their bikes down Death Hill. That's all he can remember - not very helpful. He thinks the book is by Thomas Rockwell, the author of How to Eat Fried Worms, but we couldn't find any info when we googled him. Any help will be much appreciated!

* My stomach's growling and I've got to get ready for church, so I'm signing out. Have a great week, everyone. Happy Reading!

Spreading the Love

Kristina honored me with this You Make My Day Award, which is my very first blog award. I was touched by all the nice things she said about me. Thanks so much, Kristina!

I have so many book blogs on my feed list that it's just impossible to narrow my favorites down to 10. All of you do a wonderful job on your blogs - I've gotten so many fabulous recommendations from your posts. Here are just a FEW of the blogs that make my day:

A Patchwork of Books - My list has to include Amanda, because she's the whole reason I found this awesome book blogging community. I started my blog as a personal project, not even realizing that there were other book bloggers out there. When I stumbled on her blog and saw all of the sites on her blogroll, it was like Christmas for me. Seriously. Plus, she writes a great blog and always has excellent recommendations.

Inside A Book - I love this blog because its author and I have a lot in common. We live in the same city and seem to like the same kind of books. She doesn't update nearly as often as I would like, but her blog is wonderful.

Chainreader - The first thing you must do on this blog is read its description. It is laugh-out-loud funny. The author obviously has a great sense of humor, and I enjoy her succinct, but thoughtful reviews.

A Striped Armchair - I know Eva has gotten and given this award a million times, but that just goes to show how awesome she is. I love her thorough reviews and the sweet comments she leaves on my blog. She commented that I looked gorgeous in a picture I posted, so she's my BFF now whether she likes it or not!

Big A, Little A - I found Kelly's blog only recently, but I love it for its variety and the thorough reviews.

Miss Erin - Erin is a talented girl in more ways than one. Her blog covers a variety of topics, and her addiction to certain authors (Shannon Hale) just makes me laugh. I always enjoy reading what she writes.

Lightheaded Books - Despite the title of this blog, the reviews are not "lightheaded" at all. I think they are intelligent and well-written.

Thoughts of Joy - I enjoy this blog for numerous reasons, including the succinct reviews and the fun challenges Joy hosts.

Becky's Book Reviews - I know Becky is widely loved, but I just have to give her this award for all the hard work she puts in on her blogs. She's always got something going on, whether it's a review, an author interview or a new challenge. She's amazing!

This & That

In an effort to avoid folding laundry declutter my mind, I thought I'd let you all in on some thoughts that have been floating around in there lately. I've got news about a giveaway, an upcoming author feature, an award and lots of other random stuff, so here we go:

* I love magazines, so much so that I subscribe to at least 20 of them. Of these, only 1 - Bookmarks - is dedicated solely to books/reading. Book review magazines just aren't very prevalent (Anyone have any recommendations?), so I get excited when my favorite magazines allot at least a little bit of space to books. I recently picked up the March issue of Good Housekeeping, and was excited to see a short story by one of my favorite authors, Jodi Picoult. I love Jodi because she's fearless. Her books tackle tough issues, which she examines with both honesty and understanding. To me, her stories ring with authenticity. Perhaps you can begin to see why I was so disappointed in "Spring Break," which concerns a mom who leaves her family one day out of the blue and takes up residence in a seaside Ritz Carlton. Although she scares her family to death, causing emotional damage to her husband and children, everything wraps up nicely in the end. Now, I like happy endings, but I excpected more from Picoult. Did anyone else read this? What did you think? I thought Jodi whimped out on this one.

* I've been chatting with some authors lately - did you catch Jason Wright's reaction to my review of Christmas Jars? I think the guy has a great sense of humor, and I'm honored that he stopped by my humble little blog. Stay tuned, because I will be talking to author Amanda Ford on March 5. She will be on a blog tour to promote her book, Kiss Me, I'm Single: An Ode to the Single Life - I've been perusing it, and I think it's full of some great wisdom. Stand by for a review and hopefully an interview with this fun writer.

* Many, many thanks to Kristina for honoring me with my first-ever blog award. Now, I'm busily trying to choose 10 bloggers who make my day. I have TONS of book blogs on my feeds list, so this is an amazingly tough job. Hopefully, I'll have that post up tomorrow. Thanks again, Kristina, this award definitely made my day!

* Finally, I just finished The Bookseller of Kabul by Asne Seierstad, which is fascinating. My review should be up tonight (that's if I stop procrastinating on the laundry); as part of it, I'm going to be giving away my copy of the book. If you are interested in entering the drawing, all you have to do is wait (hopefully not too long) until my review is up, then make a comment. Simple, right? I (or most likely, one of my kids) will draw a name on February 25. If you're not interested in the book, I would still love your comment :)

* Crap! I think that's it. Looks like it's back to laundry for me. I hope the rest of you are doing something exciting - like reading a great book. I'll catch you later when I'm a little more caught up on my housework!
