GCash Good Data for Good Promotes Ethical AI Use

“AI is a valuable tool for financial innovation, but it must be developed and implemented with fairness, transparency, and robust data security measures in place. This initiative is one of GCash’s conscious efforts to align AI with a moral compass, human values, fairness, transparency, and accountability, which we treat as an urgent matter that impacts human lives, society, and the environment.” ~Sara Venturina, GCash Chief Data Officer
(L-R) GCash data privacy officer Atty. Rob Real, chief transformation officer Ron Testa, head of data enablement Marah Dimasupil, guest speaker Dr. Ben Teehankee, GCash analytics steward on AI ethics Jannelle Molina.

As artificial intelligence (AI) gains popularity, its widespread use raises ethical, transparency, and existential risk concerns, particularly in the financial technology landscape. Fintech institutions must address the urgent demand for ethical considerations and responsible AI systems in order to create safe and secure AI products. This includes requiring thoughtful, human-centered design to improve data privacy and security, as well as transparency, accountability, human oversight, and fairness at the forefront of AI development.

With responsible finance at its core, GCash emphasizes the importance of upholding these values as it transforms the financial sector with the launch of its AI Ethics roadshow as part of the GCash Good Data for Good initiative. In line with its mission to champion inclusive finance, this initiative aims to effectively use AI within its organization and across the fintech space to create a financial future that fosters an ethical climate, inclusivity, and security, resulting in a collaborative ripple of positive change for millions of Filipinos.

To further embrace the AI revolution, lead with vision and integrity, and confidently navigate the future of fintech, the roadshow featured a series of talks and online training sessions for GCash employees and partners who play critical roles in the company's financial inclusion efforts. Furthermore, this program supports workforce development by cultivating a culture of ethical excellence, adaptability, resilience, and innovation.

As part of its commitment to promoting ethical AI practices, GCash is a proud member of the AI Verify Foundation, a global community that brings together AI owners, solution providers, users, and policymakers to create reliable AI systems. This membership demonstrates GCash's commitment to Responsible AI, allowing the company to compare its efforts to global standards and strengthen its position on ethical AI integration.

Furthermore, the GCash Data for Good initiative reflects the organization's commitment to fostering an ethical data-driven culture within the fintech community. This includes strengthening its credibility in data management and advancing the integration of AI into GCash's AI-powered in-app features, including its newest innovations such as GScore AI, which calculates users' creditworthiness and loan eligibility based on their daily app usage, removing the need for forms or additional documents, hyper-personalized ads, and GCoach AI, which is an in-app guide that uses generative AI to educate users on spending, saving, and growing their money.

Similarly, through this initiative, GCash improves not only its transparent AI decision-making process, which is supplemented by human oversight to ensure it is steeped in ethical considerations that prioritize the welfare of its users, but also its risk management by proactively mitigating potential future risks caused by data mishandling or the deployment of biased AI models.

“At GCash, we see the rise of AI as an opportunity to explore this next great frontier where the boundaries between business growth and higher purpose are merging into one, where doing good really is good for business.” ~Marah Dimasupil, GCash head for data enablement

As the largest digital ecosystem in the country, GCash continues to stand at the forefront of responsible, fair, and ethical AI usage to help build the financial progress of Filipinos through secure, accessible, and innovative financial solutions.

GCash promotes MSMEs' growth by providing innovative solutions and responsive financial services

"MSMEs make up more than 99% of businesses in the Philippines and contribute 35% to 40% to the gross domestic product or GDP. GCash's commitment is to create a dynamic and responsive financial ecosystem that enables these businesses to thrive. When small businesses grow, they also spur growth in their communities.” ~Jong Layug, GCash B2B General Manager
GCash has emerged as a trusted partner for MSMEs, providing meaningful and responsive digital solutions to a sector often underserved by traditional banking

GCash for Business set to launch new innovative solutions to address businesses’ evolving needs.

With the digital economy accelerating, GCash, the Philippines' leading finance super app and largest cashless ecosystem, has established itself as a trusted partner for micro, small, and medium-sized businesses by developing meaningful and responsive solutions that make digital financial tools more accessible. GCash's impact on MSMEs demonstrates the company's steadfast commitment to providing Finance For All.

Davao Premium Food Venture Co., which franchises popular food brands in the Philippines, attests to GCash's value to their business after three years of partnership. Owners Kay Anjella Alcober and Jarre Cubio have seen GCash contribute a significant 5% of their company's revenue, giving them the confidence to plan further expansion. This demonstrates how GCash is an important component of businesses' growth strategies.

GCash has an impact on small businesses in the community, such as DKM Pharmacy. Since becoming a GCash Pera Outlet Partner a year ago, DKM Pharmacy owner Madelyn Leonin has received an additional monthly income of Php12, 000, demonstrating the power of digital finance in increasing revenue streams. Meanwhile, Ailyn Javier's internet cafe and sari-sari store, Icy Cyberia Internet Cafe, is well-known in her neighborhood thanks to the use of GCash, which attracts residents, workers, and delivery drivers.

These success stories demonstrate GCash's commitment to bringing financial inclusion to MSMEs, a sector that is frequently overlooked by traditional banking services. GCash enables MSMEs to remain competitive in a digitally changing landscape by providing tools such as cashless payment services (Scan to Pay, QR payments, Send Money, API Integration, Funds Disbursement for payroll streamlining, wallet limit upgrade) and access to fair lending through GLoans For Business.

GCash For Business to unveil more innovations

MSMEs can now use GCash for Business to make cashless payments. This is especially important for retail and food and beverage businesses that rely on high-volume transactions and value a faster and more efficient customer experience.  GCash is constantly innovating to meet a broader range of needs and challenges, as well as improve services that have proven critical to MSMEs.

Retail and food and beverage businesses will soon be able to accept GCash payments with a single tap, reducing long lines and the need for smaller businesses to hire additional employees.

Another GCash innovation in the works is a more affordable terminal that uses audio QR codes to instantly confirm payment via an audio notification. Customers will save time and effort by presenting the e-receipt of their GCash payment as proof. MSMEs who handle long lines will benefit from the audio confirmation feature. The feature also supports portable payments, which is especially useful for MSMEs with booths and kiosks.

Finally, GCash is introducing a new innovation that will greatly benefit the service industry, particularly front-line workers such as delivery drivers and gas station employees. The device, designed specifically for MSMEs, offers businesses the convenience of an affordable, lightweight, and portable device.

All these innovations boost the capabilities of GCash as a convenient, efficient, and fast financial service provider.

Making cities digital through GCash

In a bid to bring digital finance to more MSMEs, GCash is rolling out its DigiCities program in 27 cities.

DigiCities provides local government units with the tools to empower their businesses to go digital and to expand their business acumen, such as financial literacy workshops and GCash For Business hubs that allow easy onboarding to the platform. The program will also provide MSMEs with Masterclass sessions on how to use TikTok Shop, Canva, and other digital tools, boosting their digital marketing and branding capabilities to reach more customers. This is an initiative made possible through GCash's partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and StartUp Village.

MSMEs will also get access to mentorship from some of the most successful Pera Outlet businesses through the GCash Pera Outlet kapihan.

The pilot implementation of the DigiCities program aims to transform LGUs to become more digitally inclusive, not just within their business community but also with government services. GCash will be working with LGUs to enable convenience and accessibility in services like tax collection, revenue generation, public services, social welfare and financial aid

"GCash is only as good as its latest innovations—our technology is constantly evolving, and so are the needs of MSMEs. We need to make sure that the ecosystem that we are constantly developing addresses their needs. Since our vision is Finance For All, we are always thinking of developing new tools and functionalities that will be useful for everyone in the digital economy, including MSMEs. This makes us the trusted partner of businesses, big and small, nationwide." ~Martha Sazon, President & CEO at GCash

Some of the cities that have already being empowered through DigiCities include Quezon City, Manila, Caloocan, ParaƱaque, Muntinlupa, Baguio, San Fernando, Bacoor, Sta. Rosa, Lipa, Iloilo, Bacolod, Tagbilaran, Victorias, Davao, Cagayan de Oro, and General Santos City.

GCash rolls out in the UK, Canada

“GCash is now available to our kababayans in the UK and Canada thanks to strong support from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). As we prepare for the full launch of our overseas service later this year, we’ll be sure to make their experience of using the app the best as possible. We’re also gearing up to reach more Filipinos across the world as we hope to make significant headway in achieving our vision of ‘Finance for All’.” ~Martha Sazon, President of GCash
GCash rolls out in the UK, Canada

GCash rolls out in the UK, Canada. Filipinos can start using GCash with British and Canadian numbers.

The Philippines’ number one financial app, GCash, further expands its global reach as it officially rolls out in both the United Kingdom and Canada, enabling the first 1,000 Filipinos there to start using the e-wallet with their international mobile numbers.

Filipinos in Canada and the UK can begin signing up for GCash regardless of their SIM cards and start supporting their families back home by sending money for free (GCash to GCash), paying bills, and buying them prepaid load credits.

Earlier this month, GCash received the green light from the BSP to start the initial beta launch of its overseas service which allowed Filipinos in Japan, Australia, and Italy to use GCash using any SIM from those countries. This has made GCash the first and only e-wallet in the Philippines to offer this kind of service overseas. In March, the e-wallet also rolled out the beta service in the US.

In just a few easy steps, Filipinos in the UK, Canada, and the other mentioned countries can begin using GCash. First, they just need to download the app from Google Play Store for Android, the App Store for iPhone and iPad users, or the Huawei Gallery. Then, users can select their country and input their details. To verify their account, they just need to scan their Philippine passport or other valid IDs and take a selfie.

Users in the UK and Canada can also cash in via Remitly. In the Remitly app, select GCash as the e-wallet; enter the recipient’s name and mobile numbers; confirm the details and transfer the amount; and receive the funds straight in the GCash Overseas wallet. Finally, fully verified users can start sending money, paying bills, and buying load credits wherever they are, with just a few taps on the app.

Aside from making GCash services available to more Filipinos worldwide, the e-wallet has also been continuously expanding its international payments touchpoints in partnership with global fintech giant, Alipay+. GCash can now be used to pay in select merchants across countries like Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and Qatar as well as top European destinations like the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy.
